Battelle For Kids believes that it is important to find the "right" people, practices, measures, and messages to improve education. Seeking answers and finding the "right" elements of a K-12 educational model, Battelle For Kids staff along with business leaders, educators and foundation executives embarked on a global education study.
During spring 2012 the group visited and examined five highly rated school systems in Finland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Ontario and Long Beach, California. In studying these school districts, the group wanted to identify key components of these systems' successes and model that information to improve students' educational outcomes in Ohio and around the country. On November 5, education leaders and stake holders from Ohio and across the U.S. will meet in Columbus for the Global Education Summit to hear, analyze and discuss the information gained on the study trips. The purpose of the summit, and an overall goal of Battelle for Kids, is to offer real strategies to improve education, not just offer an analysis. A monograph for the study trips will be created in order to present data from each school system visit along with specific action strategies
appropriate for U.S. educational improvement. Ideally these strategies can be adopted in local schools to provide all students the best education possible.
K-12 International Best Practices: The Finland Story, our forum on Wednesday, November 7, will feature Jim Mahoney, the executive director of Battelle For Kids and provide an overview of the findings from the Global Education Study and include a presentation from Leo Pahkin, counsellor of education at the Finnish National Board of Education.

Finland (
i/ˈfɪnlənd/; Finnish: Suomi [suomi]; Swedish: Finland [ˈfɪnland]), officially the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe, a peninsula with Gulf of Finland to the south and Gulf of Bothnia to the west. It has land borders with Sweden and Norway to the north and Russia to the east. Finland is part of the geographic region of Fennoscandia, which also includes Scandinavia and parts of Russia.
Finland's population is 5.5 million (2014), staying roughly on the same level with only about 9% increase in 24 years since the last economic depression in 1990. The majority live in the southern regions. The single largest group of foreigners living in Finland are Russians and Estonians, 36% of all of the foreigners (2014). In terms of area, it is the eighth largest country in Europe and the most sparsely populated country in the European Union. Finland is a parliamentary republic with a central government based in the capital Helsinki, local governments in 317 municipalities, and an autonomous region, the Åland Islands. Over 1.4 million people live in the Greater Helsinki metropolitan area, which produces a third of the country's GDP. Other large cities include Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Jyväskylä, Lahti, and Kuopio.

Nickel Creek (album)
Nickel Creek is an eponymous album by the acoustic/"newgrass" trio known as Nickel Creek. The group had released two albums prior to this, however their earlier albums are no longer in print, and the band redefined their style before the release of Nickel Creek. As a result, Nickel Creek is widely regarded as their debut album. It was released by Sugar Hill Records, and produced by country star Alison Krauss.

The album was originally released with a different cover photo which featured fourth band member Scott Thile. He was also mentioned more extensively in the album credits. Upon his departure from the band, the album was reprinted with a new photo which featured the remaining three members of the band, and Scott's credits were lessened slightly to simply indicate his performance on the individual songs.
Other than photography credit, the track listings, performances, and all other credits are identical on both releases.

Battelle For Kids believes that it is important to find the "right" people, practices, measures, and messages to improve education. Seeking answers and finding the "right" elements of a K-12 educational model, Battelle For Kids staff along with business leaders, educators and foundation executives embarked on a global education study.
During spring 2012 the group visited and examined five highly rated school systems in Finland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Ontario and Long Beach, California. In studying these school districts, the group wanted to identify key components of these systems' successes and model that information to improve students' educational outcomes in Ohio and around the country. On November 5, education leaders and stake holders from Ohio and across the U.S. will meet in Columbus for the Global Education Summit to hear, analyze and discuss the information gained on the study trips. The purpose of the summit, and an overall goal of Battelle for Kids, is to offer real strategies to improve education, not just offer an analysis. A monograph for the study trips will be created in order to present data from each school system visit along with specific action strategies
appropriate for U.S. educational improvement. Ideally these strategies can be adopted in local schools to provide all students the best education possible.
K-12 International Best Practices: The Finland Story, our forum on Wednesday, November 7, will feature Jim Mahoney, the executive director of Battelle For Kids and provide an overview of the findings from the Global Education Study and include a presentation from Leo Pahkin, counsellor of education at the Finnish National Board of Education.

Along with its many green areas this city by the sea comes alive during the spring and summer months. Despite the harsh climate, tropical plants are popular in the city. The hilly landscape of the spacious Pallas Ounastunturi National Park is located in the north west, close to the Swedish border. Yellow-green reindeer moss and dense layers of many other varieties grow on the seemingly endless hills of primeval stone and gneiss. The plant life of this region always surprises those who encounter it for the first time. Finland is a country that boasts more lakes than any other. It is full of picturesque, natural beauty, unique cultural treasures and historic locations: a tranquil paradise set in the extreme north.

1) Our first impressions of Helsinki included wandering around the city and sampling some Finnish street food in the form of a do it yourself picnic we had on a pedestrian bench.
2) As a day trip we left the urban center of Helsinki via ferry for a wander around quaint Suomenlinna island where we sat down to enjoy ice cream - I tried the Salmiakki flavored one.
3) On a dare I had the opportunity to sample Salmiakki, a black licorice that is popular in Finland and other Scandinavian countries. As a big fan of licorice, I liked it instantly whereas Audrey spat it out immediately.
4) During our stay in Dalsbruk we had the chance to participate in some adventure sports including Sea Kayaking are the Archipelago passing by islands in Kimito where we had a chance to spot wildlife.
5) From Kasnas we took a speed boat to visit Rosala - home to a Viking Center - and from there we continued on to check out Bengtskär Lighthouse.
6) While listening to some great live 70's music we had an opportunity to sample three different kinds of Finnish beer while eating reindeer meat.
7) Having a chance to properly explore Helsinki was a must for both of us. One of the highlights of wandering around the city centre was having a chance to see some of the impressive architecture including Uspenski Cathedral while eating salmon and reindeer meatballs by the Harbor market.
8) During our time in the Finnish Archipelago we were based in the town of Dalsbruk (Swedish name) also called Taalintehdas (Finnish name) a small town home to mostly Swedish speakers also fluent in Finnish.
9) Finally, no trip of ours would be complete without keying in on the local cuisine. Before we left Taalintehdas we check out a super market where we spotted Finnish snacks such as Fazer chocolate, Finnish beer, salmon, Salmiakki, rye bread and more. We're certainly going to miss Finnish cuisine.

Helsinki, the Daughter of the Baltic, the Gibraltar of the North, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king Gustav I as a as a trading centre and in 1812, Csar Alexander I made it the capital of the Principality of Finland.
The Senaatintori is located in the centre of the city. The square is dominated by a monument and surrounded by a number of fine Neo-Classical buildings. Csar Alexander II included public, ecclesiastical and academic buildings in the square, including government offices, a cathedral and university.
Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes.
The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life.
Helsinki is a captivating city and has rightly been declared Europe's capital of culture.

With its long days and short nights, summertime is a great time to be in Helsinki. This was our second visit to the Finnish capital, and we were excited as ever to experience it for a couple of days. With summer in full swing, we enjoyed dinners al fresco, boat trips to nearby islands, and lots of walking around town. Here's a look at how we spent our time in Helsinki:
This is a city that comes alive during the summer months, and it was great enjoying all the events taking place in the city as well as relaxing outdoors. We loved revisiting Helsinki and we discovered so many new places that we had completely skipped over the first time around.

Nimikkeen takaisin Suomessa - ja erityisesti Helsinki - oli meidän suurin yllätys tänä kesänä. Kuten pääkaupunki, se on lähellä tahansa suurkaupungissa tarjoaa, mutta se jotenkin säilyttää runsaasti pikkukaupungin charmia. Yksi tärkeimmistä syistä on se, että et ole koskaan kaukana luonnosta.
