When 77-year-old folk music legend Tom Paxton stopped by Acoustic Guitar’s offices in late April 2015, it was in the midst of what he insists will be his last tour, after more than five decades of nearly ceaseless travel and recording. He was in town to support his latest release, Redemption Road, more than 60 albums down the line since his 1964 debut at the height of the “folk scare.” Paxton has traveled a long way since the hey-day of the Greenwich Village scene, but he has never stopped writing great songs and touching hearts (and minds) with his music. On this afternoon, joined by guitarist Robin Bullock, Paxton opened with a beautiful version of one of his best-known older tunes, “The Last Thing on My Mind,” then played a pair of songs from Redemption Road, the wistful and nostalgic “...
Tom Paxton - Lyndon Johnson Told The Nation Lyrics: I got a letter from L. B. J. It said this is your lucky day. It's time to put your khaki trousers on. Though it may seem very queer We've got no jobs to give you here So we are sending you to Viet Nam [Cho:] Lyndon Johnson told the nation, "Have no fear of escalation. I am trying everyone to please. Though it isn't really war, We're sending fifty thousand more, To help save Viet nam from Viet Namese." I jumped off the old troop ship, And sank in mud up to my hips. I cussed until the captain called me down. Never mind how hard it's raining, Think of all the ground we're gaining, Just don't take one step outside of town. [Cho:] Every night the local gentry, Sneak out past the sleeping sentry. They go to joi...

Pete Seeger sings Tom Paxton's song live on the "Tonight In Person" Show (1964). Here's some of the "best" lyrics: I learned that Washington never told a lie. I learned that soldiers seldom die. I learned that everybody's free. And that's what the teacher said to me. That's what I learned in school today. That's what I learned in school. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

It's definitely not from a 1st gen tape, but the sound quality is still good. However, this might not be the entire set, as the tape ran out before the last song finish. Tom wrote the song "Phil" as a lament for his friend Phil Ochs, who hanged himself on April 9th, 1976, after years...

Excellent FM broadcast (June 28, 2014) What the world needs now… Tom Paxton has become a voice of his generation, addressing issues of injustice and inhumanity, laying bare the absurdities of modern culture and celebrating the tenderest bonds of family, friends, and community. In describing Tom Paxton’s influence on his fellow musicians, Pete Seeger has said: “Tom’s songs have a way of sneaking up on you. You find yourself humming them, whistling them, and singing a verse to a friend. Like the songs of Woody Guthrie, they’re becoming part of America.” Pete goes on: “In a small village near Calcutta, in 1998, a villager who could not speak English sang me What ...

This is a song written by Tom Paxton and Bruce Woodley (of folk group The Seekers) in 1967. Both Tom and The Seekers did great renditions of it. This song's chords progression is very complicated; I spent an entire morning last summer trying to figure them out - and it works out pretty well for me. The chords and lyrics to the song can be found at http://ddpro.ucoz.com/tpchords/angeline.htm. A nice little music video of The Seeker's rendition, starring Helen Shoults as Angeline, can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USby-9lx58U.

Tell the rose not to bloom, the stream to flow
Tell the rain not to fall, the tree to grow
Tell the high summer sky to lose it's blue
But don't tell me that I don't belong with you
CHORUS: You could send me away and I would go
I would go but I would not go too far
You could send me home but you would know
Home to me is anywhere you are
When I met you there was nothing to decide
It was simply something happening inside
I felt strange for a minute then I knew
That I finally felt complete when I found you
There are those who never really know their mind
They're confused and they're not the staying kind
