Australia's nightmare start0:58

Cricket: Australia is in turmoil early in the second test at Hobart, losing their first two wickets for just two runs.

Mitchell Marsh was named 12th man for the second Test in Hobart.

MITCHELL Marsh’s time in the Test team is over - for now.

After weeks of conjecture, the all-rounder was dropped by Australia for the second Test against South Africa in Hobart.

His place was taken by South Australia batsman Callum Ferguson, marking a shift in policy from the national selectors who for years have preferred to pick five specialist batsmen plus an all-rounder in the Test XI.

Ferguson was presented with his baggy green cap by South Australian legend and current Australia fielding coach, Greg Blewett.

The weather in Hobart looks to be what ultimately shifted their view, with the overcast conditions and predictions of rain making an extra batsman an attractive option, while also negating the need for an extra pace bowler.

The fast bowling load will now be shouldered by frontline quicks Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, as well as debutant Joe Mennie.

Also from South Australia, Mennie has essentially been rewarded for his outstanding Sheffield Shield campaign last summer in which he was the leading wicket-taker in the competition.

He was named in the squad for the first Test before being released back to his state, who he took three wickets for in last week’s Shield win over Tasmania.

Former Tasmania and Australia fast bowler Ben Hilfenhaus handed over the baggy green cap to Mennie.

Meanwhile Joe Burns returns at the top of the order in place of Shaun Marsh, who broke his finger last week.
