A SAN Francisco home that served as the setting for the popular 1993 movie Mrs. Doubtfire, starring Robin Williams, has sold for $US4.15 million.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the four-bedroom Victorian house sold this week after being listed in September for $US4.45 million. It did not identify the buyer.

The iconic Mrs. Doubtfire house served as a temporary shrine to Williams after his suicide in 2014, amassing flowers, candles and other items mourning the legendary comedian’s death.

The previous owner of the home was a plastic surgeon who bought it in 1997 for about $1.4 million.

Uploaded to journalist Matthew Keyes’ YouTube account, one scene shows Williams running late for his daughter’s spelling bee. While having an argument with his wife (Sally Field), their daughter loses concentration and misses her word. In an emotional talk afterwards, she asks her dad why he can’t be Mrs Doubtfire again.

“Life’s more real and wonderful than [acting all day],” Williams says. “Acting ... it’s nice but it’s a job.”

In the second heartbreaking scene, Williams and Field are having an argument at the bottom of the stairs while their kids sit upstairs on a bed listening to every word.
