Man and woman in custody after hour-and-a-half, 100km car chase

A MAN and woman have been arrested after a police pursuit that lasted more than two hours and spanned more than 100km.

Police tried to pull over a black Peugeot hatch on the Princes Highway at Monteith just after 7.30pm on Thursday but the driver refused to stop.

Police pursued the car for several minutes before cancelling the chase at Tailem Bend out of concern for the safety of other motorists.

Officers continued to monitor the car — which they discovered had been stolen from Morwell in Victoria’s Gippsland region on Wednesday — from the ground and air as it made its way east.

The car was also reportedly involved in a petrol drive-off in Naracoorte, in SA’s South East, just before 5pm yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said the stolen car had its tyres spiked on several occasions but it continued driving.

“Patrols kept observations on the car from a distance as it travelled along the Mallee Highway and back roads, passing through rural towns including Moorlands, Wynarka, Sherlock and Peake,” she said.

It is understood the car was travelling close to the speed limit for much of the pursuit but the driver continued to refuse to pull over as he traversed the country roads.

The police helicopter tracked the car to North Ave, Lameroo, where it eventually stopped, more than 120km from where the chase began, reportedly because of a flat tyre.

The two occupants of the car, both from Victoria, were arrested without further incident.

A 33-year-old woman was charged with engage in a police pursuit, unlawful possession and make off without payment.

A 27-year-old man was charged with unlawful possession, make off without payment, fail to truly answer and provide false details.

The pair were refused police bail and will appear in the Murray Bridge Magistrates Court today.

Mount Gambier Criminal Investigation Branch have confirmed the arrests were not related to two wanted man on the run after a gunpoint carjacking near Mount Gambier earlier on Thursday.
