ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — Esperanza High School officials are investigating allegations that fans hurled racial slurs at a Foothill basketball player during a Crestview League game Friday night.
CBS2’s Stacy Butler spoke to the player, guard Reed Nakakihara, who knows he stands out on the court, and not just because he averages about 16 points a game for the Santa Ana high school.
“I’m usually the guy that’s different on the team, that’s the shortestm that’s the only Asian,” Nakakihara said.
And more and more Nakakihara said he is paying a price. Rival fans are chanting racial slurs at him from the stands, including most recently from the student section at Friday night’s game.
“‘Jackie Chan,’ and ‘shrimp fried rice,’ or ‘chicken fried rice,’ something like that,” Nakakihara said. “I’d love to see the fans be able to chant things whatever they want, but they should refrain from when they get personal about race, maybe back off about that.”
Esperanza High School principal Ken Fox was not as accommodating.
In a statement, Fox said: “When I became aware of this issue I contacted the Foothill Principal, Dr. Stephany, to express my deepest apologies for this incident. These actions are not reflective of the values or standards of Esperanza High School.”
Nakakihara was unaware that the school is investigating the allegation.
“I appreciate that a lot,” he said.
But he is taking it in stride, noting that the Knights won Friday’s game 61-57.
“We were actually down 16 points and we came back and won by four,” he said. “So I think we had the last laugh that night.”
Butler reported that Esperanza is expected to decide what to do about the incident on Tuesday.

AAWW is a national not-for-profit arts organization devoted to the creating, publishing, developing and disseminating of creative writing by Asian Americans–in other words, we’re the preeminent organization dedicated to the belief that Asian American stories deserve to be told.
We’re building the Asian literary culture of tomorrow through our curatorial platform, which includes our New York events series and our online editorial initiatives. In a time when China and India are on the rise, when immigration is a vital electoral issue, when the detention of Muslim Americans is a matter of common practice, we believe Asian American literature is vital to interpret our post-multicultural but not post-racial age. Our curatorial take is intellectual and alternative, pop cultural and highbrow, warm and artistically innovative, and vested in New York City communities.
Our curatorial platform is premised on the idea of a big-tent Asian American cultural pluralism. We’re interested in both the New York publishing industry and ethnic studies, the South Asian diasporic novel and the Asian American story of assimilation, high culture and pop culture, Lisa Lowe and Amar Chitra Katha, avant-garde poetry and spoken word, journalism and critical race theory, Midnight’s Children and Dictee. We are against both an exclusive literary culture that believes that race does not exist and Asian American narratives that lead to self-stereotyping and limit the menu of our identity. We are for inventing the future of Asian American literary culture. Named one of the top five Asian American groups nationally, covered by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and Poets & Writers, we are a safe community space and an anti-racist counterculture, incubating new ideas and interpretations of what it means to be both an American and a global citizen.

INTRO
Four U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday urged the country's Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate whether race, ethnicity or national origin played a part in the recent cases against Chinese-American scientists who were wrongfully suspected of economic espionage.
PKG
The move came one day before members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), including Judy Chu, Ted Lieu, Grace Meng and Michael Honda, are to meet Attorney General Loretta Lynch, over the cases of National Weather Service hydrologist Sherry Chen, Temple University professor Xiaoxing Xi and other similar cases.
Chen and Xi were suspected of economic espionage only to have those charges later dropped. The prestigious Science magazine reported last Friday that in just the past year, charges have been dropped against five Chinese-born scientists accused of crimes related to trade secrets theft or economic spying.
SOUNDBTIE: JUDY CHU, U.S. Congresswoman
"Standing with me Xi and Chen who are prominent scientists recently filed victim appears to be a practice and a pattern of federal government profiling Chinese-American scientists as spies for China even when there's no credible evidence to support it. I want to stress that Congress will not tolerate Chinese-Americans are being treated as second class citizens. Our message to the DOJ is clear. Chinese Americans and Asian-Americans are just that Americans. As such, this is not just an Asian issue, but an American issue."
Congressman Lieu noted that the United States has its own "blind spots," one of which is "a history of discrimination against Asian-Americans." He said it has become clear innocent Chinese-American scientists are targeted because of their ethnicity.
SOUNDBTIE: TED LIEU, U.S. Congresswoman
"If it was just one case, that might be a mistake. But when it is multiple cases, you now have a pattern."
Their concerns were echoed by Congresswoman Meng, who stressed that a practice of targeting of Chinese-Americans based on their background is "unacceptable."
Meng said these investigations turned the world of the accused upside-down and caused a huge financial and economic cost for them.
Honda also called for an independent investigation into possible profiling of Chinese-American scientists.
Xi and Chen were present at the news conference in Washington, D.C. and shared their stories respectively.

Host and correspondent Ernabel Demillo interviews members of the “Asian Pride Project" and how they’ve created new public service announcements to raise awareness about gay issues within the Asian American communities nationwide.
For decades, award-winning documentarian Dai Sil Kim-Gibson has been championing the causes of human and civil rights issues and activists. She’s not your typical documentarian, at age 77, she’s had a whole other life as an author and academic, before devoting her life to social justice films. Correspondent Minnie Roh gets up close and personal with Dai Sil Kim-Gibson, and looks at her career and award winning films.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon, ending the Vietnam War. Many of the American soldiers who served in Vietnam left behind children they fathered. Some were abandoned in Vietnam, others were adopted here in the United States. What happened to these forgotten children? Correspondent Mike Gilliam provides an exclusive report and interviews Kien Nguyen, Author of “The Unwanted,” and Trista Goldberg, Founder of Operation Reunite, a non-profit organization that provides DNA tests to help reconnect birth parents to their Amerasian children. But for many Asian Americans L-G-B-T-Q’s (Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual and Queer), it’s still a struggle to find acceptance within their own communities. Many LGBTQ’s have come out of the closet, but their parents are still afraid to let the world know about their child’s identity.
Undocumented students face greater hurdles in getting a college education. Correspondent Paul Lin has an in-depth report on how these “Dreamers" achieved their American dream and the types of opportunities that are available today.
