Galle was known as Gimhathiththa before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, when it was the main port on the island. Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, during the Dutch colonial period. Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in South and Southeast Asia, showing the interaction between Portuguese architectural styles and native traditions. The city was extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. The Galle fort is a world heritage site and is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers.

STORYLINE
APTN has obtained a clean version of dramatic footage showing the impact of the devastating tsunami on the southern Sri Lankan city of Galle.
Torrents of water swept through the town, taking buses and cars with it and submerging buildings and bridges.
Desperate people, caught by the rising waters, tried to hang to flooded buildings but some were swept away by the water.
Other were trapped on top of buses about to sink.
Nearly all homes within about a kilometre (half a mile) of the coast were destroyed or damaged by the tidal waves.
By Wednesday, hopes were dimming of finding more survivors as the country''s official death toll rose to almost 22,500.
The city, which is about 200 kilometres (124 miles) south of Colombo, is now suffering food shortages as shaken refugees crowd into churches, mosques and Buddhist temples.
The government in Colombo has called Sunday''s events a national disaster and has appealed for emergency relief.
The tidal waves were triggered by a huge earthquake off northeast Indonesia, some 15-hundred kilometres (one-thousand miles) from Sri Lanka.

Galle was known as Gimhathiththa before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, when it was the main port on the island. Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, during the Dutch colonial period. Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in South and Southeast Asia, showing the interaction between Portuguese architectural styles and native traditions. The city was extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. The Galle fort is a world heritage site and is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers.

APTN has obtained a clean version of dramatic footage showing the impact of the devastating tsunami on the southern Sri Lankan city of Galle.
Torrents of water swept through the town, taking buses and cars with it and submerging buildings and bridges.
Desperate people, caught by the rising waters, tried to hang to flooded buildings but some were swept away by the water.
Other were trapped on top of buses about to sink.
Nearly all homes within about a kilometre (half a mile) of the coast were destroyed or damaged by the tidal waves.
By Wednesday, hopes were dimming of finding more survivors as the country''s official death toll rose to almost 22,500.
The city, which is about 200 kilometres (124 miles) south of Colombo, is now suffering food shortages as shaken refugees crowd into churches, mosques and Buddhist temples.
The government in Colombo has called Sunday''s events a national disaster and has appealed for emergency relief.
The tidal waves were triggered by a huge earthquake off northeast Indonesia, some 15-hundred kilometres (one-thousand miles) from Sri Lanka.

Torrents of water swept through the town, taking buses and cars with it and submerging buildings and bridges.
Desperate people, caught by the rising waters, tried to hang to flooded buildings but some were swept away by the water.
Other were trapped on top of buses about to sink.
Nearly all homes within about a kilometre (half a mile) of the coast were destroyed or damaged by the tidal waves.
By Wednesday, hopes were dimming of finding more survivors as the country''s official death toll rose to almost 22,500.
The city, which is about 200 kilometres (124 miles) south of Colombo, is now suffering food shortages as shaken refugees crowd into churches, mosques and Buddhist temples.
The government in Colombo has called Sunday''s events a national disaster and has appealed for emergency relief.
The tidal waves were triggered by a huge earthquake off northeast Indonesia, some 15-hundred kilometres (one-thousand miles) from Sri Lanka.

Go to Kandy to see the Sri Dhalada Maligawa and Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. Also don't miss out on the traditional Sri Lanka dance performance held every day at 17:00 in the city hall.
Go to Matale and climb the Sigiriya or Pidurangala Rock, see the ancient frescoes and enjoy a panoramic view of the area.
Go to Raththota, Matale and climb Riverstone, see the Mini Worlds' End and directly travel to Wasgamuwa.
Go to Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa to see ancient temples, ruins which are very beautiful.
Go to Nuwara Eliya to see beautiful villages which look like England. There are many tea estates and Hakgala botanical gardens too.
Go to Unawatuna, Galle, Trincomalee (Nilaweli Beach), Pasikuda and north areas to see extremely beautiful beaches.
Go to Mirissa and Kalpitiya and watch whales and dolphins with privately operated boat tours.
Go to Jaffna to see the Portuguese built Fort (1618) it was later expanded by the Dutch (1795), Nallur Temple, Keerimalai natural fresh water pond just 10 feet from the sea and the islands in the Northern Province (Delft, Kayts, Leyden, Middlburg and many more) to see unexplored Sri Lanka.
Go to Yala National Park , Wilpattu , Wasgamuwa for the best wildlife Safari experience. Udawalawe to see elephants and Kumana (Yala East) for birdwatching.
Go to Kithulgala for white water rafting in the Keliniya River.
Go to Dehiwala Zoo. Located in the Colombo district. It will take nearly 8 - 10 hours to view all the animals, Aquarium, butterfly park, elephant Show, sea lion show and the snake farm. You have to purchase entrance ticket. Also has to pay for your camera/video.Ticket prices may vary for foreigners and SARC citizens from the locals. When you get in side the compound follow the guide number posted there, starting 1 and it is nearly 60 routes there. 176 route bus pass this place or on the Galle road, get down at the Dehiwala junction. Agree for LKR100 and Jump in a Trishaw to get in front of the entrance (10 Km from Colombo Fort). It is strictly prohibited to take polythene bags with you. Good restaurant available inside the compound. Sundays are crowded day specially on school holidays there may be around 5,000 visitors in a day.
Go to Galle Face Terrace. It is located next to Colombo center and next to the old parliament complex on the Galle road near to the sea. It is a place for locals to gather to spend their evening. At the end of the terrace is 150 years old Galle face hotel. In the morning it is a place for walking and jogging. (0.18Km). In the evening it is a place for to see the fantastic sun setting with different colors. Street vendors sale local food, Coca Cola, Pepsi and mineral water. During season you can view different kinds of kites being flown over there. Also you can purchase one of them and can fly it. There is a viewing stage built in to the ocean you can walk up to the guard railing at the end. Also there is a flag post and in the sun rising and setting time you can watch colorful flag ceremony by the armed force. t is a nice place to capture different kinds of images.
Go to Independence square arcade, Colombo. Fine dining, entertainment and shopping for International brands.
Go to Floating market at the Bastian Mawatha (Close to Fort Railway Station), for local products shopping and dining on a floating restaurant.

We’ve arrived in Sri Lanka, and after spending a few crazy days in Colombo, we’re now down in the beautiful beach town of Hikkaduwa where we’ve spent the last few days surfing, relaxing and enjoying the amazing lifestyle here. The beaches are beautiful, the nature’s amazing. You could really spend months just hanging around here. However, we’ve only got three weeks to see the whole country, so tomorrow we’re heading off to Galle, one of the best examples of fortified cities built by Europeans in South and Southeast Asia. Walking around Galle, you can really see the influence Europeans had on the city. There’s Dutch, Portuguese, and British architecture everywhere. You can also find cute little tea houses, art galleries mixed with traditional Asian culture. We’re up nice and early and took a tuk tuk ride from Galle to Unawatuna, which is one of the most famous and beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka. We’re going to have a look around and then have some breakfast by the beach.
We’ve arrived in Ella, a cute little town up in the Sri Lankan Hill Country. It’s really beautiful here. It’s green, it’s lush, it’s absolutely amazing. We’re right in the middle of a tea plantation, and the best thing to go do here is to go trekking and enjoy these amazing views that you see behind me. We’re in Nuwara Eliya, an area in the Hill Country of Sri Lanka also known as Little Britain because of its typical British climate and British architecture. It’s a very popular place for Sri Lankans to visit during the holidays to get away from the heat. And one of the most popular things to do here is to walk among the tea plantations and, of course, drink some tea. We’ve arrived at Summit of Adam’s Peak. I’m absolutely freezing. We started 2 o’clock this morning, and it was pretty hard work to get to the top here. But it’s really, really beautiful up here now. We just missed the sunrise because it was cloudy, but the clouds are clearing now and you can get a really nice view down to the valley. It’s pretty amazing how high up we are. It’s also pretty incredible how many people are coming up here in the morning. It was absolutely packed, about a thousand of us walking really slow up these really, really steep stairs. Well we survived Adam’s Peak, and after a few days rest, we arrived in Kandy which is the spiritual and cultural capital of Sri Lanka. It was the last place to be conquered by the British, and because of that, they preserved a lot of their traditions and culture. So we’re going to have a look around town, explore the streets, the markets and the beautiful nature, which is right in the middle of town. So we’re finishing up our trip in Negombo, a fishing village by the airport. We had a really amazing trip in Sri Lanka. The nature’s been absolutely beautiful, the beach has been incredible, and the people are really, really friendly and really welcoming. So many things to see, so many things to do. We’re definitely going to have to come back here again. But tomorrow, we’re off to Malaysia.

We’ve arrived in Sri Lanka, and after spending a few crazy days in Colombo, we’re now down in the beautiful beach town of Hikkaduwa where we’ve spent the last few days surfing, relaxing and enjoying the amazing lifestyle here. The beaches are beautiful, the nature’s amazing. You could really spend months just hanging around here. However, we’ve only got three weeks to see the whole country, so tomorrow we’re heading off to Galle, one of the best examples of fortified cities built by Europeans in South and Southeast Asia. Walking around Galle, you can really see the influence Europeans had on the city. There’s Dutch, Portuguese, and British architecture everywhere. You can also find cute little tea houses, art galleries mixed with traditional Asian culture. We’re up nice and early and took a tuk tuk ride from Galle to Unawatuna, which is one of the most famous and beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka. We’re going to have a look around and then have some breakfast by the beach.
We’ve arrived in Ella, a cute little town up in the Sri Lankan Hill Country. It’s really beautiful here. It’s green, it’s lush, it’s absolutely amazing. We’re right in the middle of a tea plantation, and the best thing to go do here is to go trekking and enjoy these amazing views that you see behind me. We’re in Nuwara Eliya, an area in the Hill Country of Sri Lanka also known as Little Britain because of its typical British climate and British architecture. It’s a very popular place for Sri Lankans to visit during the holidays to get away from the heat. And one of the most popular things to do here is to walk among the tea plantations and, of course, drink some tea. We’ve arrived at Summit of Adam’s Peak. I’m absolutely freezing. We started 2 o’clock this morning, and it was pretty hard work to get to the top here. But it’s really, really beautiful up here now. We just missed the sunrise because it was cloudy, but the clouds are clearing now and you can get a really nice view down to the valley. It’s pretty amazing how high up we are. It’s also pretty incredible how many people are coming up here in the morning. It was absolutely packed, about a thousand of us walking really slow up these really, really steep stairs. It was pretty amazing, but it’s also pretty cold, so we’re going to head back down and head to Kandy next.
