Dandy Hub sparks album title for local band

AS A teenager growing up in Dandenong in the 90s, there was one place Travis Velthoven spent an awful lot of time — The Dandy Hub arcade on Langhorne St.

When he revisited his old stomping ground recently, Velthoven, now 30, was surprised — and a little pleased — to see the old place had hardly changed a bit.

So when it came time for his band, Big League, to release their debut EP, Velthoven tapped into some of that 90s nostalgia, dubbing the 12-inch vinyl Dandy Hub.

“The Dandy Hub’s a great forgotten shopping arcade located right in the centre of town, it’s only fault is it got old, I thought it fitted the theme perfectly,” Velthoven said.

“The EP features songs about social commentaries on suburban life, it just fits so well.

“Our mate who did the cover art went down to take a photograph and the food court looks just the same, classic.”

The four-piece indie-rock band, which includes Velthoven’s girlfriend, Marie Black, Dave Soeteman and Danny Crynes, will play a handful of shows to celebrate the EP.

They will do an in-store appearance at Off The Hip Records, Flinders Lane, Melbourne on December 9, and at the Reverence Hotel, 28 Napier St, Footscray, on December 17.
