Scotland (/ˈskɒt.lənd/; Scots: [ˈskɔt.lənd]; Scottish Gaelic: Alba [ˈal̪ˠapə]) is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and covers the northern third of the island of Great Britain. It shares a border with England to the south, and is otherwise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to the east and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the south-west. In addition to the mainland, the country is made up of more than 790 islands, including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.
Edinburgh, the country's capital and second-largest city, was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual, and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third-largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil capital.
Over one million people were given emergency food in Britain last year and the numbers are growing. The Food Bank follows the stories of some of the people who get help from Scotland's busiest food bank in Dundee. These include Charlie who, after being a victim of a robbery, is left with no money to buy food, and single dad Billy, who after a long spell out of work is forced to get help from the food bank to feed his four-year-old son Jack.
In Scotland, legends of Bonnie Prince Charlie swirl with pipers and kilts around crumbling castles. We remember Highland massacres in Glencoe, and try tossing a caber (log) at a Scottish clan gathering in Culloden. We play hide-and-seek with the Loch Ness Monster, tour a whisky distillery in Oban, and take a ferry to sacred Iona. © 2000 Rick Steves' Europe
Aired: 2016-08-25 Episode Overview: Thirty years ago Scottish football was riding high, producing many world-class players and regularly qualifying for international tournaments. But the social landscape was changing fast with a new political doctrine placing money above everything - resulting in one fifth of the work force in Scotland losing their jobs, fracturing the industrial communities that supported many of the football clubs. The game badly needed modernisation and a new direction. Emerging was a new breed of leaders with new skills, with the ability of keeping one eye on the ball... and the other on business. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07r24xz . .
Scotlands Game S01E02 The Perfect Storm Aired: 2016-09-01 Episode Overview: Football had become a global brand and Scotland was keen for its share of the action, and the cash. But the new money came at a price, top players demanded higher wages, kick-off times were changed and TV now called the shots. Clubs desperate to compete in this new world were vulnerable to hare-brained schemes, mavericks with deep pockets and ego-driven illusions. Almost overnight the dual drivers of money and media transformed the game - but left Scottish football struggling to forge an identity that would carry it into the future. In the third episode of Drugs Map of Britain, we investigate valium addiction in Scotland, where three quarters of drug related deaths involve this type of drug. Millions of the pills- both real and counterfeit- are available to buy on the streets for as little as 20p each. We meet those buying them and witness the devastating effects of addiction for someone like Levi, who’s been taking Valium since he was 13. Has the widely prescribed “mother’s little helper” become Scotland’s silent killer? Scottish nationalists may have failed in their 2014 bid for independence, but that wasn't the end of the story. They've grown in strength and numbers, and now have another chance to push for a split from the United Kingdom. This QuickTake video explores the resilience of the independence movement, how Brexit's boosted its case, and why some say it's is bad thing. Like this video? Read your free e-book: http://downloadapp.us/mebk/50/en/B000PY3ESQ/book Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, waves of tenant evictions swept through northern Scotland in what would become known as the Highland Clearances. Wealthy landlords, discovering hardy breeds of sheep that would flourish in the severe Highland climate, replaced populated farms and villages with higher-revenue sheep farms. The former tenants faced the choice of migrating to other parts of Scotland or emigrating to other countries. Stonemason Donald Macleod's collected writings provide one of the few existing chronicles of the Clearances from the perspective of one of the evicted tenants.the majority of contemporary reports of the Highland Clearances were composed by journalists or the parties who put the evictions ...

The shocking policy, which the SNP Government charges an astronomical 12 per cent fee to administer, is causing uproar across the country and has been compared to a "state sponsoredbanking scandal." Despite earlier claiming that "as a society we owe an enormous debt of gratitude to our older people" Ms Sturgeon's Government is now putting those older people into debt so they can receive care services if they need it. Irrespective of how much National Insurance they have paid over the years, the scheme targeted at the over 60's encourages pensioners to mortgage their home up to the value of £30,000, even if they are living on basic pension. And bizarrely the Government is denying the equity grab is a "loan" despite the marketing material using the word a total of 74 times in just one piece ...

Whoever travels to Scotland, meets a beautiful and rich country, rich in beauty and history. The majestic castles greet the visitor in every corner of the country. Witnesses of time ago which remind one rather of plays and dramas, such as Shakespeare or Macbeth which are the most famous example of it. Some parts of Scotland rank among the most thinly settled areas of Europe and offer the possibility of experiencing nearly undisturbed landscapes. Whether lonely lighthouses or postcard picture church ruins, Scotland should be traveled in peace and with time, in order to absorb the un-comparable impressions, of nature and architect, it has to offer.

We don't have that much in common
We don't even sound alike
I've never been to Scotland
I got me own bagpipes
Keep your double-O seven
We got Remington Steele
My fucking pride is Irish
I don't care what you feel
(Chorus)
Scotland, you're not all that great
Scotland, you fill us with hate
Scotland, don't make a big fuss
Scotland, you owe us
Still earing kilts and knee socks
That shite's getting old
If it wasn't for the Guinness
We'd fucking run the globe
I saw the movie Braveheart
No big deal to me
If not for the Irish
You wouldn't be free
(Spoken rant)
(Chorus)
Scotch ain't the only whiskey
We have Jameson with our stout
I don't care for Ewan MacGregor
So Paddy knocked him out
Have Edinburgh, Scotland
We've got Cliffs of Mohr
Our tourist are drunk
They'll skip your fucking tour
Eat up all that haggis
With potatoes we feast
Wath that mouth there Scotty
You'll be Ireland East
