Recognized as 1 of only 41 leading National Cancer Institute-designated centers, we have been at the forefront of cancer care and discovery since the 1970's.
That's when the brilliant, tireless and internationally-known Dr. Janet D. Rowley discovered a vital breakthrough in understanding the relationship between cancer and genetics -- a game changer that led to finding key genetic mutations in every type of cancer.
And Dr. Rowley wasn't the only one. Many of the roots of chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, gene therapy and bone marrow transplantation can be traced back to our Cancer Center, where an entirely new generation of research scientists continue to be inspired by the commitment, passion and legacy of Dr. Rowley and others like her.
They will write the next chapter in the relentless pursuit of the next big breakthrough in the prevention, detection, treatment and survivorship of cancer.
But they can't do it alone. Behind every passionate scientist with the potential of unlocking cancer's myriad of secrets, there must be a funding source. And that's where we come in. For nearly half-a-century, and with more than 3-million dollars raised thus far, the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation Auxiliary Board) has made a commitment each year to providing three young researchers with seed money to move new, innovative ideas from concept to theory.

Our second Hope Grant presentation on Monday September 27th was at the University of Chicago Medical Center. We gathered in the lobby of the university's new research building, a cutting-edge facility dedicated entirely to medical research that houses Dr. Cunningham's lab. The research center sits directly in the middle of the university's medical campus and just steps away from the children's hospital. It is this proximity that allows research like Dr. Cunningham's to be translational -- that is, shortening the distance "from lab bench to patient bed" and allowing for work both clinical and laboratory work, which can represent great advantages in speeding the process to develop new therapies.
This is the first time Hope on Wheels has made a grant to the University of Chicago medical center, and Dr. Cunningham's research, which the grant will support, focuses on a secondary cancer that is actually caused by the treatment for a primary childhood cancer.

Comer Children’s Asthma Center is a multi-disciplinary, multi-center with a community outreach to improve asthma outcomes in the University of Chicago Medicine outreach area of Southside Chicago. The center works with partners to uphold four pillars of excellence: clinical excellence, education outreach, community involvement and exploration of mechanisms to increase knowledge and management of asthma (research).
As well as offering inpatient and outpatient care, the centre offers asthma screening in the schools to ensure that all kids who have asthma be identified & referred for appropriate care whether this is with a Pediatrician who has a special interest in asthma or an asthma specialist.

Comer physicians have pioneered treatment that reduces chronic lung disease and other complications of prematurity. Now they are 5 months old and are doing extremely well because of the excellent start they received at Comer Children's hospital.
Jack's story:
Jack was diagnosed with leukemia. Our world-renowned oncologists make breakthrough drugs and therapies available years before they are available at most institutions.
Comer's private rooms are specially designed to meet both the medical and psychological needs of your child. We bring state-of-the-art technology into a family-focused environment, Including beds for parents and room service.
Comer's Child Life Program has gained a national reputation of excellence for holistic treatment.
We use teaching dolls called shadow buddies to help prepare children and families for what's happening. They come with a hospital gown, a hat and mask, footies and ID bracelet, just like a child would wear when they come in for surgery.

Our second Hope Grant presentation on Monday September 27th was at the University of Chicago Medical Center. We gathered in the lobby of the university's new research building, a cutting-edge facility dedicated entirely to medical research that houses Dr. Cunningham's lab. The research center sits directly in the middle of the university's medical campus and just steps away from the children's hospital. It is this proximity that allows research like Dr. Cunningham's to be translational -- that is, shortening the distance "from lab bench to patient bed" and allowing for work both clinical and laboratory work, which can represent great advantages in speeding the process to develop new therapies. Comer's private rooms are specially designed to meet both the medical and psychological needs of your child. We bring state-of-the-art technology into a family-focused environment, Including beds for parents and room service.
Comer's Child Life Program has gained a national reputation of excellence for holistic treatment.
We use teaching dolls called shadow buddies to help prepare children and families for what's happening. They come with a hospital gown, a hat and mask, footies and ID bracelet, just like a child would wear when they come in for surgery.

You can't come to Chicago and not eat deep-dish pizza! During our week here we ate at many pizzerias in town including Lou Malnati's, Giordano's, Gino's East Side, and Pizzeria Uno. Formerly known as the Sears Tower, Willis Tower is now the 2nd tallest building in the United States. Many of the buildings at the University of Chicago were designed in the Gothic style.

University of Chicago scholars have played a major role in the development of various academic disciplines, including: the Chicago school of economics, the Chicago school of sociology, law and economics theory in legal analysis,[6] the Chicago school of literary criticism, the Chicago school of religion,[7] and the behavioralism school of political science.[8] Chicago's physics department helped develop the world's first man-made, self-sustaining nuclear reaction beneath the university's Stagg Field.[9] Chicago's research pursuits have been aided by unique affiliations with world-renowned institutions like the nearby Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) and Argonne National Laboratory, as well as the Marine Biological Laboratory. The university is also home to the University of Chicago Press, the largest university press in the United States.[10] With an estimated completion date of 2020, the Barack Obama Presidential Center will be housed at the university and include both the Obama presidential library and offices of the Obama Foundation.[11]
Founded by the American Baptist Education Society with a donation from oil magnate and wealthiest man in history John D. Rockefeller, the University of Chicago was incorporated in 1890; William Rainey Harper became the university's first president in 1891, and the first classes were held in 1892. Both Harper and future president Robert Maynard Hutchins advocated for Chicago's curriculum to be based upon theoretical and perennial issues rather than on applied sciences and commercial utility.[12] With Harper's vision in mind, the University of Chicago also became one of the 14 founding members of the Association of American Universities, an international organization of leading research universities, in 1900.[13]
The University of Chicago has many prominent alumni. 89 Nobel laureates[14] have been affiliated with the university as professors, students, faculty, or staff, the fourth most of any institution in the world. Similarly, 34 faculty members and 16 alumni have been awarded the MacArthur “Genius Grant”.[15] In addition, Chicago's alumni include 50 Rhodes Scholars,[16] 22 Marshall Scholars,[17] 9 Fields Medalists,[18] 20 National Humanities Medalists,[19] 13 billionaire graduates, and a plethora of members of the United States Congress and heads of state of countries all over the world.

Rockefeller, the University of Chicago was incorporated in 1890; William Rainey Harper became the university's first president in 1891, and the first classes were held in 1892. Both Harper and future president Robert Maynard Hutchins advocated for Chicago's curriculum to be based upon theoretical and perennial issues rather than on applied sciences and commercial utility.[12] With Harper's vision in mind, the University of Chicago also became one of the 14 founding members of the Association of American Universities, an international organization of leading research universities, in 1900.[13]
The University of Chicago has many prominent alumni. 89 Nobel laureates[14] have been affiliated with the university as professors, students, faculty, or staff, the fourth most of any institution in the world. Similarly, 34 faculty members and 16 alumni have been awarded the MacArthur “Genius Grant”.[15] In addition, Chicago's alumni include 50 Rhodes Scholars,[16] 22 Marshall Scholars,[17] 9 Fields Medalists,[18] 20 National Humanities Medalists,[19] 13 billionaire graduates, and a plethora of members of the United States Congress and heads of state of countries all over the world.
