Heath Ledger exhibition at Art Gallery of WA next year

Heath Ledger fans are in for a treat next year when a massive exhibition featuring the movie star's personal effects goes on show at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

Among the items will be a diary the actor kept while he was filming The Dark Knight in 2008. His portrayal of The Joker in that movie saw him win an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

The exhibition has been organised jointly by the art gallery and the Western Australian Museum.

Culture and Arts Minister John Day said it would showcase the actor's extraordinary talent, his aspirations as a director and provide a window into his early life growing up in Perth.

"Heath Ledger carved an incredible place in the history of cinema with his prodigious talent and dedication to his art," said the minister.

"He was much more than a charismatic movie star - Heath Ledger was a passionate, deeply committed film-maker who partnered with some of the world's great directors, actors and crews to achieve unforgettable performances."

Heath Ledger - A Life in Pictures will be free to the public at the art gallery from October 2017 until January 2018.
