I don't know if you people remember Bob Breeden's first visit to see us in Ohio. He showed us how he backs down a mountain when he gets stuck. That's why he doesn't have chains on his plane. I gave it a shot a few years ago for similar reasons. But fast-forward a couple years...Chris Christiansen, who has been hand crafting airplanes since he was a teenager, is now in the tailwheel business. He bestowed upon me a present one fine day. I ran it with the chains secured the first run (that's why you see them in a couple video clips). The next day I unchained the rudder, removed some parts and found shorter bolts. It looks ridiculously simple now. I was amazed how well the plane steered without any linkage to the wheel. It's very fluid and predictable. There is a giant plastic friciton washer that makes it that way I hear. It took a few takeoffs to make adjustments to things like doing 180 degree takeoffs and such, because the tail is a giant pendulum when taxiing, so when it's swinging and held by chains, it different than without. (or you can just lift it in the air and it doesn't even matter if you have a wheel). I think this design would be good where tempurature doesn't swing wildly warm and cool. The washer expands and contracts a little making it tight and loose. Make no mistake boys (and LLTDs) I'm still Matco to the bone marrow. I just like to try new things. Kind of like how Bob Marley was married to Rita but he still had a whole bunch of girlfriends and Baby Mommas™. Plus I will have to use my brakes more now to steer [I can't think of a Nesta Bob Marley metaphor for that right now]. George? You still there? P.S. This is unrelated to my Buddy Joel's OutcastCub.
