Your tour starts at the Blue Mosque, Istanbul where you meet your expert local tour guide. Bosphorus
The Bosphorus (/ˈbɒsfərəs/) or Bosporus (/ˈbɒspərəs/; Ancient Greek: Βόσπορος, Bósporos; Turkish: Boğaziçi) is a natural strait and internationally-significant waterway located in northwestern Turkey that forms part of the continental boundary between Europe and Asia, and separates Asian Turkey from European Turkey. The world's narrowest strait used for international navigation, the Bosporus connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, and, by extension via the Dardanelles, the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas.
Most of the shores of the strait are heavily settled, straddled by the city of Istanbul's metropolitan population of 17 million inhabitants extending inland from both coasts.
Together with the Dardanelles (Hellespont) strait, the Bosphorus forms the Turkish Straits.
Name
The original name of the channel comes from an Anglicization of the Ancient Greek Βόσπορος (Bosporos), which was folk-etymologized as βοὸς πόρος, i.e. "cattle strait" (or "Ox-ford"), from the genitive of bous βοῦς "ox, cattle" + poros πόρος "passage", thus meaning "cattle-passage", or "cow passage". This is in reference to the mythological story of Io, who was transformed into a cow, and was subsequently condemned to wander the Earth until she crossed the Bosphorus, where she met the Titan Prometheus, who comforted Io with the information that she would be restored to human form by Zeus and become the ancestress of the greatest of all heroes, Heracles (Hercules).

Your tour starts at the Blue Mosque, Istanbul where you meet your expert local tour guide. They'll lead you inside for a guided tour, where they'll point out the stunning tile work, columns and stained glass windows of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, explaining how locals came to refer to it as the Blue Mosque.
Next up is a Hagia Sophia tour. With pre-reserved tickets you'll skip long lines to get straight inside this beautiful structure. Your Istanbul tour guide will explain to you how how the building was once a church, then a mosque and is now the official Hagia Sophia Museum, also know as the Aya Sofya; demonstrating the power the rulers of the Ottoman Empire held.
Next stop is the Basilica Cistern where you'll once again have privileged access. Your local Istanbul guide will lead you through a special entrance here, past long lines for Basilica Cistern tickets, and straight into its cool, dark interior. The next activity is a Bosphorus cruise by private boat. Traveling the distance between Europe and Asia, your guide will point out top sights like the Bosphorus Bridge, Dolmabahce Palace and countless mosques. With only 30 people MAXIMUM on your boat and an expert Istanbul guide on hand, you'll get so much more from your Bosphorus cruise.
You'll disembark on the other side of the Bosphorus Bridge and walk the beautiful streets of the area up to the Galata Tower. Bosphorus Tour in Istanbul / Turkey
One of the worlds most strategic waterways, Bosphorus is the strait between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara; it is an inundated valley that follows an irregular northeast-southwest course 32km (20 miles) long, 730-3300m (800-3600 yards) wide, 30-120m (100-395ft) deep.
Bosphorus comes from a Tracian word of unknown origin, interpreted in Greek as meaning “Ford of the Cow”, from the legend of Io, one of the many lovers of Zeus, who swam across the sea here as a cow chased and continuously disturbed by flies sent by Hera.
Known in Turkish as Bogazici (the Strait), it links the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara and, with theDardanelles (in Canakkale), separates Europe from Asia. It is a former river valley which was drowned by the sea at the end of the Tertiary period. This is a very busy strait with many ships and oil tankers, as well as local fishing and passenger boats.
The current flows north to south; however, a strong subsurface countercurrent with numerous points and coves sets up swirls and eddies that make navigation dangerous to the inexperienced.
There are two suspension toll bridges on this Strait: The first one over the Bosphorus between Beylerbeyi and Ortaköy, opened in 1973, is called as Bogazici Bridge, 1074m (1175yards) long, 6 lanes, 165m (540ft) height of piers. The second one between Anadolu Hisari andRumeli Hisari, opened in 1988, is called as Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, 1090m (1192yd) long, 8 lanes, 65m from the water.
With the shores rising to heights up to 200m (650ft), lined with palaces, ruins, villages, and gardens, this is one of the most beautiful stretches of scenery in Turkey. The best way of seeing the Bosphorus in all its beauty is to take a trip on one of the coastal boats, in this way you can also admire many of the old Ottoman wooden houses (called as Yali in Turkish). You can also stay in some of the best hotels or eat in some of the best restaurants along its shores during your stay in this magnificent city.
Some of the interesting palaces, buildings or neighborhoods on the Bosphorus are: Galata tower, Dolmabahce Palace, Ciragan Palace,Yildiz Palace, Besiktas, Ortaköy, Arnavutköy, Bebek, Rumeli Fortress, Tarabya, Yeniköy, Istinye, Sariyer, Uskudar (Scutari), Kanlica, Beykoz,Anatolian Fortress, Beylerbeyi Palace and Kuleli Military High school.

It is now possible to cross the Bosphorus Strait - from Asia to Europe in just four minutes by the new Marmaray tunnel. It is the realisation of a project dreamt up by Ottoman sultans more than a century ago.
The tunnel is the world's first connecting two continents and was inaugurated on the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey.
The engineering feat spans 13 kilometres and will carry subway commuters in Istanbul, which is Europe's biggest city with a population of 15 million people. An estimated two million cross the Bosphorus Strait daily.
Work began in 2004 on what is one of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan pet projects designed to change the face of Turkey.Archaeological excavations delayed completion. Eventually the tunnel will serve high-speed and freight trains.
The idea for a rail tunnel below the Bosphorus dates back to 1860 while it is believed at one time one Sultan had French engineers draw up plans for a submerged tunnel which was never built and the peninsula remained intact.
Now the Marmaray tunnel, an immersed tube set in the seabed has joined the two continents.
One point four kilometres of its full length is fully immersed some 60 metres below the surface. It can carry around 1.5 million passengers per day. The total cost topped three point three billion euros and the government hopes it will develop into an important trading route.
Marmaray is set on a silty seabed and is 20 kilometres from the active North Anatolian Fault raising fears it could be at risk from a large earthquake.
But its free floating structure has been designed to withstand a quake with a magnitude of 9. Its interlocking construction means each section can be sealed off.
The Yenikapi station on the European side of Istanbul will showcase relics which were uncovered during the tunnel's construction. Many date back as far a 8,500 years. The excavation site included a Byzantine port and 13 shipwrecks.
