POLICE forensics officers are scouring the crime scene around a Southport unit where two people were found dead last night.

Police set up a crime scene and were gathering evidence at the Johnston Street address after they were alerted to the incident just before 5pm.

Detectives are today trying to piece together the circumstances around the deaths but police allege their inquiries are likely to turn into a murder investigation.

The bodies of a man and woman were reportedly found in the unit behind cafe The Roost @ 53. The surrounding area was taped off and under police guard.

Earlier yesterday evening, a woman left the unit accompanied by officers and was driven off in a police vehicle.

Gold Coast District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Marc Kimber said forensic police were working to identify cause of death.
