Future Melbourne editor Nick Richardson details the Herald Sun's in-depth investigation into what's next for Victoria's capital.

What does the future hold for Melbourne?

Future Melbourne: What’s it all about?

THE rest of the world knows Melbourne is the most liveable city on the planet.

But what will it take for Melbourne to keep that title?

Will it be putting a roof on our iconic stadium, the MCG?

That idea is designed to fire imagination and spark debate about the thinking we need to shape our city for the next generation.

There is no shortage of inspiration: perhaps it will be a hi-tech medical hub that draws the world best minds here.

Or a major road initiative that transforms traffic congestion.

Or maybe it’s finding new jobs in growth suburbs to help cater for our booming population.

These are the ideas at the heart of the Herald Sun’s Future Melbourne campaign that starts today.

During the next nine days we will identify the major issues that confront the city and suburbs and highlight some solutions.

We will champion initiatives, ideas and proposals that we believe will make a positive difference to the city and to the next generation of Victorians who use our city.

We need to take steps now to prevent those problems becoming chronic symptoms of a city that has grown out of control in 30 years time.

Now is the time for planners, policymakers and government to come together to plan for Melbourne’s best kind of future.

To find out what that future could look like, follow the Herald Sun as we identify the suburbs that will grow in the next generation, the transport initiatives that will shape our commuting, the new jobs that will transform the city and the destinations that will mark the next stage in Melbourne’s evolution.
