Sierra Leone (
i/sɪˈɛərə lɪˈoʊni, -lɪˈoʊn/), officially the Republic of Sierra Leone, is a country in West Africa. It is bordered by Guinea on the north, Liberia in the south-east, and the Atlantic Ocean in the south-west. Sierra Leone has a tropical climate, with a diverse environment ranging from savannah to rainforests. Sierra Leone has a total area of 71,740 km2 (27,699 sq mi) and an estimated population of 6 million (2011 United Nations estimate).Freetown is the capital, largest city, and its economic and political centre. Bo is the second largest city. The other major cities in the country with a population above 100,000 are Kenema, Makeni and Koidu Town. Sierra Leone is divided into four geographical regions: the Northern Province, Eastern Province, Southern Province and the Western Area, which are further divided into fourteen districts.
About sixteen ethnic groups inhabit Sierra Leone, each with their own language and customs. The two largest and most influential are the Temne and the Mende people. The Temne are predominantly found in the north of the country, while the Mende are predominant in the south-east. Although English is the official language spoken at schools and government administration, the Krio language is the most widely spoken language in the country and unites all the different ethnic groups in the country, especially in their trade and social interaction with each other.

As fighting in the capital was quelled to all but sporadic resistance, hospital officials on Saturday began to tally the cost in human lives.
Nigerian-led troops in control of Freetown also worked to curb additional bloodshed by angry mobs bent on revenge against Sierra Leone's military junta the Nigerians fought to oust.
It's been a brief but bloody campaign for the mainly Nigerian Ecomog force, and for the war weary troops this was a moment to savour.
As they drove through the shattered streets of the capital Freetown, the people gave them an unequivocal welcome - with Ecomog in control they hope the democracy under their former President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah can be restored.
However Ecomog forces do not yet control the whole of the city.
They still have the task of combing the streets of the battered capital and seeking out remaining troops loyal to ousted junta leader Lt-Colonel Johnny Paul Koroma.
Nevertheless the relief of their commander was evident.

Rebel soldiers fired into a crowd of rock-throwing demonstrators on Monday as thousands of angry Sierra Leoneans marched on the home of rebel leader Foday Sankoh.
At least four people were killed and dozens were injured.
The clashes erupted as British troops began arriving to help evacuate British citizens if necessary.
Their deployment followed a week of clashes between rebels and U-N peacekeepers that have threatened
to throw the West African nation into chaos.
Demonstrators fled for their lives as guards of rebel leader Foday Sankoh fired on them.
Around five-thousand people had gathered for a rally to call for peace and to denounce the rebel Revolutionary United Front.
The group has attacked and kidnapped hundreds of U-N peacekeepers in recent days.
Monday's rally began peacefully.
But as the demonstrators began moving toward Sankoh's house, some started to throw large rocks and bricks.
The dozens of U-N peacekeepers guarding the house appeared completely overwhelmed by the crowd, pushing back against them and shouting ineffectively as the demonstrators advanced.
Rebel fighters standing behind the peacekeepers then fired through the U-N ranks, spraying the crowd with automatic weapons and at least one rocket-propelled grenade.
With the shots, the crowd began to flee in panic.
The U-N soldiers shouted "cease fire!" at the rebels and began firing into the air to get the crowds to leave.
Intermittent gunfire, including at least a handful of shots fired toward Sankoh's house from nearby streets, continued after the initial exchange, which lasted a few minutes.
Sankoh said the demonstrators provoked his guards into firing on them.

During the war, Sankoh's rebels were responsible for many atrocities, including the gruesome mutilation of thousands of people.
The situation in Sierra Leone has become increasingly chaotic over the past week.
Rebels have been involved in repeated clashes with the U-N troops, shaking a peace process that ended Sierra Leone's eight-year civil war in July.
While those clashes have apparently ended, soldiers from the country's former junta government - which was allied with the R-U-F rebels - are openly calling for their rearmament to fight the R-U-F.
Truckloads of soldiers from Sierra Leone's army and the former junta could be seen driving toward Sankoh's house after the shooting.
An advance force of British paratroopers arrived in Sierra Leone on Monday by plane from neighbouring Senegal.
Five British ships, including a frigate and a helicopter carrier, were due to arrive in a few days.
The British forces were deployed to help evacuate British citizens if necessary.
The United States also has reduced the number of embassy staff and advised or helped citizens to leave.

But as the demonstrators began moving toward Sankoh's house, some started to throw large rocks and bricks.
The dozens of U-N peacekeepers guarding the house appeared completely overwhelmed by the crowd, pushing back against them and shouting ineffectively as the demonstrators advanced.
Rebel fighters standing behind the peacekeepers then fired through the U-N ranks, spraying the crowd with automatic weapons and at least one rocket-propelled grenade.
With the shots, the crowd began to flee in panic.
The U-N soldiers shouted "cease fire!" at the rebels and began firing into the air to get the crowds to leave.
Intermittent gunfire, including at least a handful of shots fired toward Sankoh's house from nearby streets, continued after the initial exchange, which lasted a few minutes.
Sankoh said the demonstrators provoked his guards into firing on them.

"Provoking the situation, provoking us and it's unacceptable. This is not the practice of democracy. Why you can attack the premises of the man they call a peacemaker."

During the war, Sankoh's rebels were responsible for many atrocities, including the gruesome mutilation of thousands of people.
The situation in Sierra Leone has become increasingly chaotic over the past week.
Rebels have been involved in repeated clashes with the U-N troops, shaking a peace process that ended Sierra Leone's eight-year civil war in July.
While those clashes have apparently ended, soldiers from the country's former junta government - which was allied with the R-U-F rebels - are openly calling for their rearmament to fight the R-U-F.
Truckloads of soldiers from Sierra Leone's army and the former junta could be seen driving toward Sankoh's house after the shooting.
An advance force of British paratroopers arrived in Sierra Leone on Monday by plane from neighbouring Senegal.
Five British ships, including a frigate and a helicopter carrier, were due to arrive in a few days.
The British forces were deployed to help evacuate British citizens if necessary.
The United States also has reduced the number of embassy staff and advised or helped citizens to leave.

This rebel is just a boy. He says he is 10 years old and claims he was forced to take up arms. It was not his choice.

Government soldiers grilled the youngster for half an hour before leading him away.
This boy is just one of the thousands caught up in Sierra Leone's vicious civil war. Most of the child soldiers have little idea what they are fighting for.
The military government controls the area in and around the capital Freetown. 90 kilometres away from the city, the countryside is littered with burnt out cars and trucks. Homes and villages are deserted.
People have fled to the city or the provincial capital Bo.
There they live in refugee camps and receive food aid from international charities.
But getting food to the people that need it is not easy. Convoys have been attacked by both rebels and government soldiers. Supplies have been stolen, trucks torched and drivers killed.
Impoverished villagers scavenge what they can from the wreckage.
The worst fighting is now in the east of the country. Here government soldiers are struggling to regain control of territory along the border with Liberia.
In the past 2 weeks troops have taken the town of Kailahun, only to lose it again in a rebel offensive.
No-one knows how many children that have been caught up in this war, the number that have been forced to take up arms and fight.
Now the military junta has had a change of heart and stopped enlisting youngsters.
A camp has been set up for them on the outskirts of Freetown.
Ivan Melvin Rogers stopped fighting 2 weeks ago. At 16 he is already a war veteran.

When Ebola started in the country must took it to be a political move until when its claims most lives then they realised it wasn't .My big question is WHY EVERYTHING IN COUNTRY NOW IS POLITICS? "We are currently exploring alternative ways for the President to participate in the conference".
Foreign secretary Philip Hammond co-hosted the Defeating Ebola Conference to drive forward the international response to the epidemic in Sierra Leone.
The Defeating Ebola Conference brought together over 20 governments, the UN, WHO, World Bank, NGOs, health experts and the private sector to pledge greater financial assistance, equipment and health personnel.
Will Pooley, the British nurse who contracted Ebola while working in Sierra Leone and recovered in the UK addressed the conference about his experience.
Actor Idris Elba also joined a session with Africa Minister James Duddridge and representatives from the Sierra Leonean diaspora community.
Following the conference Philip Hammond said, "Ebola is a terrible scourge. Today's conference discussed the devastating impact Ebola is having on Sierra Leone and the region. We were clear that this disease is a major threat that knows no borders. We agreed to increase our efforts to tackle Ebola and to act fast to save lives".
"The UK has so far committed £125 million to this effort. But as well as the financial commitment, I want to emphasise the huge contribution made by British troops and medics who are creating new capacity including health facilities in Sierra Leone. We've had some concrete pledges here today from a number of countries which range from financial support to airlift capability and health care personnel".

Sierra Leone President unveils austerity plans to tackle economic crisis
Sierra Leone government has announced a 30 per cent budget cut to tackle the current economic crisis. It's triggered by falls in commodity prices and the aftermath of an Ebola outbreak. President Ernest Bai Koroma says the austerity measures include a 50 per cent reduction on fuel allocations, travel budgets and vehicle maintenance for all government departments. Overseas travel will be restricted and there's an outright ban on buying office equipment. Spending in the 2016 budget was originally set at eight-hundred-and-31-million dollars. The International Monetary Fund forecasts that Sierra Leone's economy will recover by 4.3 per cent in 2016. But public finances are still reeling from a 21.5 per cent economic contraction in 2015. Hij bezoekt de tweede haven van Liberia, Buchanan, waar vandaan illegaal hout gexporteerd en wapens ingevoerd werden en gaat naar de houtkapgebieden in het binnenland van Liberia.
In Noord- Oost Congo, een gebied waar nog steeds een oorlog woedt en rebellengroeperingen actief zijn , gaat hij op nachtpatrouille met Marokkaanse VN troepen en bezoekt hij de goudmijn in Mongbwalu.
Achtergrond.
Het hout uit Liberia, de diamanten in Siera Leone en het goud en kobalt uit Congo spelen een belangrijke rol tijdens interne oorlogsvoering. Ze vormen een belangrijke bron van inkomsten voor de machthebbers EN rebellen. Een eerlijke behandeling van de arbeiders of een gelijke verdeling onder de bevolking ontbreekt. Binnen dit proces speelt de internationale consumentenmarkt een grote rol. Want de wegen waar we over rijden, de telefoon waarmee we bellen en de ring waarmee we ons huwelijk bezegelen; het zijn allemaal producten vervaardigt met behulp van de grondstoffen uit Afrika. De relatie tussen de oorlogseconomieën en het Westen wordt daarom onder de loep genomen.
In de documentaire komen ooggetuigen, arbeiders en prominente leiders aan het woord. The West Side Boys, also known as the West Side Niggaz or the West Side Junglers,[1] were an armed group in Sierra Leone, sometimes described as a splinter faction of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council. The group was influenced to some extent by American rap and gangsta rap music, especially Tupac Shakur, and the "gangsta" culture portrayed therein.[2][3] Since the title 'West Side Niggaz' would have been an entirely unacceptable phrase to be regularly used on news programmes concerning the group, the title was amended to render it to the innocuous 'West Side Boys'. Prior to their destruction, the group's size had expanded to around 600 but later suffered about 200 defections.[1]
Many members of the group were children abducted after their parents had been killed by the "recruiters". Some of these children were forced to participate in torturing their parents to death in order to brutalise and dehumanise them. (See military use of children.) The West Side Boys were heavy users of poyo, (homemade palm wine,) locally grown marijuana, and heroin bought with conflict diamonds. Conflict diamonds were also used to purchase many of their weapons, which ranged from FN FAL/L1A1 rifles, AK-47/AKM rifles and RPG-7 grenade launchers to 81 mm mortars and ZPU-2 anti-aircraft guns. Most of their vehicles were hijacked from UN food convoys.

The Fula people or Fulani or Fulɓe (Fula: Fulɓe; French: Peul; Hausa: Fulani; Portuguese: Fula; Wolof: Pël; Bambara: Fulaw) numbering approximately 20 million people in total are one of the most widely dispersed and culturally diverse of the peoples of Africa.The Fulani are bound together by the common language of Fulfulde, as well as by some basic elements of Fulbe culture, such as the pulaaku, a code of conduct common to all Fulani groups.
The Fula have a rich musical culture and play a variety of traditional instruments including drums, hoddu (a plucked skin-covered lute similar to a banjo), and riti or riiti (a one-string bowed instrument similar to a violin), in addition to vocal music. The well-known Senegalese Fula musician Baaba Maal sings in Pulaar on his recordings. Zaghareet or ululation is a popular form of vocal music formed by rapidly moving the tongue sideways and making a sharp, high sound.
Fulani music is as varied as its people. The numerous sub-groups all maintain unique repertoires of music and dance. Songs and dances reflect traditional life and are specifically designed for each individual occasion. Music is played at any occasion: when herding cattle, working in the fields, preparing food, or at the temple. Music is extremely important to the village life cycle with field cultivation, harvest and winnowing of millet performed to the rhythm of the songs and drums.
Fulani herders have a special affinity for the flute and violin nianioru. The young Fulani shepherd like to whistle and sing softly as they wander the silent savannah with cattle and goats. The truly Fulani instruments are the one-string viola of the Fulani (nianioru), the flute, the two to five string lute hoddu or molo, and the buuba and bawdi set of drums. But they are also influenced by the other instruments of the region such as the beautiful West African harp, the kora, and the balafon. Entertainment is the role of certain casts. The performance of music is the realm of specialized casts. The Griots or Awlube recite the history of the people, places and events of the community.
A significant proportion of their number, (an estimated 13 million), are nomadic, making them the largest pastoral nomadic group in the world.[6] Spread over many countries, they are found mainly in West Africa and northern parts of Central Africa, but also in Sudan and Egypt.
African countries where they are present include Mauritania, Ghana, Senegal, Guinea, the Gambia, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Niger, Chad, Togo, Gabon, South Sudan the Central African Republic, Liberia, and as far East as the Red Sea in Sudan and Egypt. With the exception of Guinea, where the Fula make up an ethnic plurality (largest single ethnic group) or approximately 49%+ of the population,[10] and Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Cameroon, Fulas are minorities in nearly all other countries they live in. Maternal health in Sierra Leone World Vision AIM
In January, 2014, a group of 12 women from the United States travelled to Sierra Leone. Many having children themselves, quickly realized the alternate reality of motherhood when education and resources are limited. In Sierra Leone, World Vision is working with faith leaders and community health workers to help mothers by providing education about simple ways to save lives. Girls age 15-19 have twice the risk of dying from pregnancy related causes then women age 20-24. Spacing pregnancies by more than 3 years can reduce under-5 mortality by 25%. By educating about and providing means to time and space pregnancies in a healthy way, more mothers are surviving pregnancy and more children are living to celebrate their fifth birthday.

When the country received its independence, hopes for the future grew even stronger. Alas, its expectations came crashing down when the country's situation grew steadily worse after repeated military interventions and a devastating ten-year civil war that raged throughout the 1990s. Now that the war is over, there is once again renewed cause for optimism about the country's future, as Sierra Leone becomes an active participant in African and world affairs. This new edition is based primarily on recent research on the country, but covers the earliest known inhabitants, the colonial era, and the period of independence including the very confusing turmoil of the recent past. Twelve years after Sierra Leone’s long civil war came to an end, its broken institutions and weak development indicators continue to impact on the lives of its people. And as ever it’s women who bear the brunt. Aside from the usual grim data, one statistic stands out: the number of female prisoners has doubled over the past three years. Paralegals Victoria and Marvel are fighting for the rights of women trapped by a corrupt system that discriminates against them. In a country of only 400 lawyers, Sierra Leone’s 80 paralegals have a crucial role to play in trying to deliver basic human rights. As we watch Victoria and Marvel at work, negotiating with police and prison authorities, advising and at times cajoling the women they have come to help, it becomes clear how daunting that task is.
