THE search has resumed this morning for the body of Matthew Leveson in bushland south of Sydney after a shoe was found at the site yesterday.

Excavators have begun clearing foliage to prepare for digging in an area off McKell Ave in the Royal National Park.

Matthew’s parents Mark and Faye Leveson arrived this morning with flowers hoping to finally witness the discovery of their son’s burial site.

The isolated spot off a car parking area has been identified by Matt’s older lover Michael Atkins, who was acquitted of his murder in 2009.

Forensice officers yesterday found a white shoe and what appears to be the sole of a matching shoe at the search site.

Excavators paring back the layers of soil in a grid search of the isolated site in the Royal National Park south of Sydney shut down their engines at the discovery at 1.30.

Police have made no statement as to whether it is a significant discovery but the shows were placed in an evidence bag and the discovery site marked with a blue evidence flag and a number one.

Police earlier told the parents of Leveson that they are confident of finding his body.

The isolated spot off a car parking area deep in the Royal National Park south of Sydney has been identified by Matt’s older lover Michael Atkins, who was acquitted of his murder in 2009.

His parents Mark and Faye Leveson arrived at the site at 10am today as the police excavator pairing back the dense undergrowth layer by layer.

“He drove him out here and dumped him like a piece of rubbish,” Ms Leveson said. Her husband said that the police had told them they were feeling confident of finding the body.

Mr Atkins broke his nine years of silence this week after admitting to lying on oath last week at the inquest into Matt’s disappearance.

Leveson partner takes police to bushland0:56

The partner of missing man Matthew Leveson is assisting police in the search for his body in NSW.

Matt, 20, was last seen leaving Sydney’s Arq nightclub with Mr Atkins in the early hours of Sunday September 23 2007.

Mr Atkins was given immunity from prosecution for murder and any other offences to force him to give evidence at the inquest.

However that immunity did not cover perjury and after he admitted lying on oath at the inquest last week detectives approached Attorney General Gabrielle Upton. She granted Mr Atkins immunity from prosecution for perjury but only if he is telling the truth about the location of the body.
