ESPN Stats and Information

Kendrys Morales agrees to terms with the Blue Jays. Morales hit 30 HR for the Royals in 2016, the most by a Royals player since Jermaine Dye hit 33 in 2000.

ESPN Stats and Information

Bartolo Colón led MLB with 8 Defensive Runs Saved in 2016. His new teammate, R.A. Dickey tied for the AL lead in that stat with 7. Braves pitchers finished 2016 with -8 Defensive Runs Saved, tied for 4th-worst in MLB.

ESPN Stats and Information

Bartolo Colón (age 43) is one of 14 pitchers to make at least 30 starts in each of the last 4 years. James Shields (age 34) is the only one of the other 13 to be within 10 years of Colón.

There is a feeling within the Yankees organization that they shouldn't eat any of the two years and $34M guaranteed remaining on Brian McCann's contract. One MLB official with knowledges of the Yankees thinking went as far as to say the Yankees won't be sending along any money in any McCann deal. We'll see. This is just another factor in the McCann trade talks with the biggest being he has a full no-trade clause. There is a belief among some close to McCann that he would approve a deal because he doesn't want to be relegated to a platoon DH and once-a-week catcher. Gary Sanchez is now the Yankees' starting catcher.

The Blue Jays signing of Kendrys Morales to a 3-year $33 million dollar deal certainly makes sense as they needed a left-handed hitter to better balance the right-handed heavy middle of their lineup. The third year of the contract could be questioned by some but shouldn't be with the low $11 million AAV of the deal. This also probably marks the end of either Jose Bautista or Edwin Encarnacion's run in Toronto. This signing by the Jays continues their belief in depth over long term riskier contracts like last year when they inked Happ and Estrada over Price.

Braves have added Bartolo Colon (age 43) and R.A. Dickey (42) in the same week. Last team to have 2 starters age 42 or older start 10+ games: The 1990 Rangers (Nolan Ryan & Charlie Hough).

Jim Bowden ESPN Senior Writer

The Braves have confirmed they have agreed to terms with free agent pitcher Bartolo Colon. Atlanta goes from youth to Senior Citizen movement with two forty year old pitchers in R.A. Dickey and now Colon. These signings show their lack of confidence in their major league ready young starting pitchers. Colon and Dickey will both make great mentors for their young pitching prospects. However, these signing will only work in my opinion if they can trade both at the July trade deadline for prospects.
