Ever thought that there were too many audio codecs, each with its own special niche? So did we, so we made a new one (1). The difference is that Opus scales from very low bit-rate VoIP to high-fidelity, low delay music transmission. It can be used for anything from making phone calls, to remote jam sessions, to archiving your music collection. It's better at speech than Speex, and better at music than Vorbis and MP3.
Opus is a lossy audio coding format developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force that is particularly suitable for interactive real-time applications over the Internet.
Opus incorporates technology from two other audio coding formats: the speech-oriented SILK and the low-latency CELT. Opus can be adjusted seamlessly between high and low bitrates, and internally, it transitions between linear predictive coding at lower bitrates and transform coding at higher bitrates. Opus has a very low algorithmic delay, which is a necessity for use as part of a low audio latency communication link, which can permit natural conversation, networked music performances, or lip sync at live events. Opus permits trading-off quality or bitrate to achieve an even smaller algorithmic delay, down to 5 ms. Its delay is very low compared to well over 100 ms for popular music formats such as MP3, Ogg Vorbis and HE-AAC; yet Opus performs very competitively with these formats in terms of quality per bitrate. Unlike Ogg Vorbis, Opus does not require the definition of large codebooks for each individual file, making it preferable to Vorbis for short clips of audio.

Opus (audio format)
Opus is a lossy audio coding format developed by Xiph and standardized by the IETF, designed to efficiently code speech and general audio in a single format, while remaining low-latency enough for real-time interactive communication and low-complexity enough for low end ARM3 processors. Opus replaces both Vorbis and Speex, and several blind listening tests have ranked it higher quality than any other standard audio format at any given bitrate, including MP3, AAC, and HE-AAC.
Opus combines the speech-oriented linear predictive coding SILK algorithm, and the lower-latency, MDCT-based CELT algorithm, switching between or combining them as needed for maximum efficiency. An audio file format is a file format for storing digital audio data on a computer system. The bit layout of the audio data (excluding metadata) is called the audio coding format and can be uncompressed, or compressed to reduce the file size, often using lossy compression. The data can be a raw bitstream in an audio coding format, but it is usually embedded in a container format or an audio data format with defined storage layer.
Format types
It is important to distinguish between the audio coding format, the container containing the raw audio data, and an audio codec. A codec performs the encoding and decoding of the raw audio data while this encoded data is (usually) stored in a container file. Although most audio file formats support only one type of audio coding data (created with an audio coder), a multimedia container format (as Matroska or AVI) may support multiple types of audio and video data.

The difference is that Opus scales from very low bit-rate VoIP to high-fidelity, low delay music transmission. Opus incorporates technology from two other audio coding formats: the speech-oriented SILK and the low-latency CELT. Opus can be adjusted seamlessly between high and low bitrates, and internally, it transitions between linear predictive coding at lower bitrates and transform coding at higher bitrates. Opus has a very low algorithmic delay, which is a necessity for use as part of a low audio latency communication link, which can permit natural conversation, networked music performances, or lip sync at live events. Opus permits trading-off quality or bitrate to achieve an even smaller algorithmic delay, down to 5 ms. Its delay is very low compared to well over 100 ms for popular music formats such as MP3, Ogg Vorbis and HE-AAC; yet Opus performs very competitively with these formats in terms of quality per bitrate. Unlike Ogg Vorbis, Opus does not require the definition of large codebooks for each individual file, making it preferable to Vorbis for short clips of audio.

The difference is that Opus scales from very low bit-rate VoIP to high-fidelity, low delay music transmission. It can be used for anything from making phone calls, to remote jam sessions, to archiving your music collection. It's better at speech than Speex, and better at music than Vorbis and MP3.

The Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 78, was completed by Camille Saint-Saëns in 1886 at what was probably the artistic zenith of his career. It is also popularly known as the "Organ Symphony", even though it is not a true symphony for organ, but simply an orchestral symphony where two sections out of four use the pipe organ. The French title of the work is more accurate: Symphonie No. 3 "avec orgue" (with organ).
Of composing the work Saint-Saëns said "I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have here accomplished, I will never achieve again."[1] The composer seemed to know it would be his last attempt at the symphonic form, and he wrote the work almost as a type of "history" of his own career: virtuoso piano passages, brilliant orchestral writing characteristic of the Romantic period, and the sound of a cathedral-sized pipe organ.
The symphony was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society in England, and the first performance was given in London on 19 May 1886, at St James's Hall, conducted by the composer. After the death of his friend Franz Liszt on 31 July 1886, Saint-Saëns dedicated the work to Liszt's memory. The composer also conducted the French premiere in January 1887.
