A-F-R-O & Marco Polo [A-F-R-O Polo]

October 7 street date. Vinyl coming 10/21. A-F-R-O is a breakthrough artist born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, who was first discovered by legendary rapper, R.A. The Rugged Man. Marco Polo is a Brooklyn based producer, raised in Toronto, Canada, who has produced music for artists such as Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Boot Camp Clik, Royce Da 5’9 & more.
Allison, Mose [I'm Not Talkin': the song stylings 1957-72]

November 4 street date. The laconic and oh-so-cool Mose Allison left an indelible impression on the history of rock’n’ roll through his influence on at least two generation of British musicians. His songs were covered by Georgie Fame, Brian Auger, the Yardbirds (featuring Jeff Beck), the Clash and of course the Who, who made ‘Young Man’ the opener of their “Live At Leeds” LP. ’m Not Talkin’: The Song Stylings Of Mose Allison” is the first compilation entirely dedicated to his vocal recordings across Prestige, Atlantic and Columbia, the three labels where he made his landmark recordings. The CD includes the most famous of his songs including ‘Parchman Farm’, ‘Young Man Blues’, ‘I Love The Life I Live’ ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’, ‘Seventh Son’ and ‘Foolkiller’, as well as lesser-known gems that show his continued aptitude for marrying sharp observations on modern life with memorable tunes.
Calendar [Blues Images 2017 Calendar (with CD)]

October 21 street date. (Returnable for full credit, in good condition, until March 2017) Our 2017 "Classic Blues Artwork from the 1920's" Calendar with free CD has broad appeal to anyone interested in Blues music or history. Within its pages is a huge treasure trove of original Blues artwork from the earliest days of recorded Blues history. In addition, each calendar contains a free CD that cleverly matches up each month's artwork with the original recording it advertises. These songs make the calendar come alive! ; This year's CD has a total of 23 tracks: 12 Blues classics from Blues masters Charley Patton, Skip James, Blind Joe Reynolds, Memphis Minnie and others . . . plus 11 super rare songs by legendary Blues artists including two recently discovered tracks by Big Bill Broonzy! The songs are newly remastered using the American Epic sound team's amazing restoration techniques! Developed at great expense for the soundtrack of the PBS series, there is less surface noise and more dynamic range than in any previous release of these tracks. You will be excited when you feel as if you are right in the room with the performers as they play and sing their hearts out!
Fields, Lee & The Expressions [Special Night]

November 4 street date. There are a few terms that get thrown around loosely, two of which are legend and retro-soul. One of these fits Lee Fields hand and glove, one of these doesn’t fit at all. Very few people in music have both earned the status of legendary and continue to solidify it. 50 years in the game and only getting better, gaining more fans, and evolving his sound on each album, Lee is in fact a Living Legend. This brings us to the misuse of the term "retro-soul" when talking about Mr. Fields. You don’t have to look far to find a younger generation emulating the essence and styles of an era the’ve only experienced through music and movies. It seems unfair to tag Lee with a term that implies imitation when he is part of the generation that actually defined the genre. Plain and simple, this is not that. "Special Night" is a masterclass in soul music past and present. Produced by Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck, and brilliantly performed by the Expressions, Special Night was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely to tape in three weeks at the legendary Diamond Mine Studios in Queens, NY. A sense of urgency, equal parts fun and inspiration, and a decent amount of beer and Jack Daniels were the driving forces during the sessions that produced Lee Fields & The Expressions latest offering.
Hiss Golden Messenger [Heart Like A Levee]

October 7 street date. The writing of the songs that became Heart Like a Levee started in a hotel room in Washington DC in January of 2015 during a powerful storm that darkened the East Coast. At that time I was feeling—more acutely than I had ever felt before—wrenched apart by my responsibilities to my family and to my music. Forgetting, momentarily, that for me, each exists only with the other. How could I forget? Though maybe my lapse was reasonable: I had just quit my job, the most recent and last, in a series of dead-end gigs stretching back 20 years, with the vow that my children would understand their father as a man in love with his world and the inventor of his own days. They would be rare in that regard. And then—driven by monthly bills and pure fear— I left for another tour, carrying a load of guilt that I could just barely lift. But in that snowy hotel room I found the refrain that became my compass: I was a dreamer, babe, when I set out on the road; but did I say I could find my way home? - M.C. Taylor (Durham, NC). The album includes guest performance by members of Bon Iver (Matt McCaughan), Megafaun (Phil Cook, Brad Cook), Mountain Man (Alexandra Sauser-Monnig), and Tift Merritt.
Joyce Manor [Cody]

October 7 street date. Cody isn’t an album that changed everything for Joyce Manor, but Joyce Manor had to change a bit to make their album Cody. Since the release of their 2014 Epitaph debut Never Hungover Again, guitarist and singer Barry Johnson has taught himself the meditation techniques championed by the Beatles and director David Lynch, and he found he was suddenly wide open. For Cody, the band camped out in the studio for two months with producer Rob Schnapf, credited on classics by Elliott Smith, Guided By Voices, Saves The Day and Rancid, all in the Joyce Manor record collections, of course. With Schnapf’s help, they’d explore deeper arrangements, new pre-production techniques, and different ways of working both together and with someone else. They also added new drummer Jeff Enzor to the band alongside bassist Matt Ebert and guitarist Chase Knobbe. With Rob Schnapf’s able help as a de facto fifth member of the band, Joyce Manor found itself bristling with inspiration. Now more than ever, says Johnson, he felt he could trust himself and his bandmates to take the risks to make the music they wanted to make. The result is a record that dares to be humble, intimate and unapologetically human.
King Creosote [Astronaut Meets Appleman]

Please note: new street date is October 21. On Astronaut Meets Appleman, King Creosote is still upsetting apple-carts and dealing with the fallout, still appraising love and life, the moon, the stars; tide tables, bagpipe scores, zeros and ones; mathematics, ticking clocks and the beat of our hearts. Astronaut Meets Appleman follows KC’s breakthrough record From Scotland With Love (2014) and his Mercury-nominated collaboration with Jon Hopkins, Diamond Mine (2011). The KC idiom – equal parts geometry, self-deprecation, cosmic wonder and seafaring poetry – remains intact on Astronaut Meets Appleman, as does his knack for a killer couplet (see drive-pop calypso ‘Love Life’: “Her jealous accusations know no bounds / Scarlett Johansson was never in my house”). But there is a renewed sense of space and letting the music breathe (lead, even) on the album – all the better to showcase a stunning ensemble cast that includes Catriona McKay (harp), Mairearad Green (bagpipes), Gordon Maclean (double bass), Hannah Fisher (violin, vocals), Sorren Maclean (guitar, vocals) and Pete Harvey (cello), alongside KC's regular rock diviners, and his baby daughter Louie Wren (on ambient reverie, 'Peter Rabbit Tea'). “King Creosote’s finest hour yet” 4* Mojo // “His wrinkled brogue – warm, pithy, occasionally fluttering to a falsetto – is a thing of understated beauty in itself, framed in folk-shanty arrangements that make telling use of strings and bagpipes” 8/10 Uncut
Lambchop [Flotus (2LP)]

November 4 street date. Available on CD & 2LP. 2LP edition comes in gatefold with download. For Love Often Turns Us Still—officially titled FLOTUS—is like many of Lambchop’s records: a subtle masterpiece, the kind that slowly and generously reveals its quiet wisdom to those patient and attentive enough to receive it. Start to finish, FLOTUS is imbued with that magic energy that comes when an artist stumbles upon the thrill of the new—something that makes them crazy enough to want to start the whole process over again. The album is bookended by two long-form pieces: the first, “In Care of 8675309,” is most reminiscent of where Lambchop has been, while the second, the sprawling, hypnotic “The Hustle,” suggests where they might still be headed. The latter seamlessly shifts between movements, a foundation suggestive of krautrock and early electronic music, gorgeously ornamented with perfectly placed piano and horns. Drawing upon a diverse palate of influences and transcending each one, it’s a stunning piece of work—certainly one of the most impressive achievements of Lambchop’s catalogue. Watching an established artist work with a new set of tools is a gift and a true litmus test for authenticity—the result depending not on the tools, but on the unique sensibilities of the artist using them. FLOTUS is anchored by those sensibilities and is brimming with the many hallmarks of Lambchop’s catalogue: the same beautifully nuanced arrangements, the same unparalleled ability to capture the eternal in life’s quotidian struggles. Kurt Wagner has made a new path to the same old joys, and in the process, he found a record that sounds like no one else—or, completely, unmistakably, like himself.
MF Doom [Unexpected Guests (2LP/Ltd)]

October 7 street date. While most fans already worship classic albums like "Operation Doomsday", "MM...FOOD", and "Madvillainy", DOOM's output also includes a number of guest appearances, non-album singles, promo tracks, and other rarities that never made it onto an official release. Now, those tracks are finally available on "Unexpected Guests", a limited-edition vinyl collection showcasing rare MF DOOM material. Included are collaborations with the likes of Talib Kweli, J Dilla, Ghostface Killah, Sean Price, Count Bass D, Vast Aire, Masta Killa, and more. Many of these tracks have never been available on vinyl before, making "Unexpected Guests" an essential addition to DOOM's already impressive catalog.
Mute [Remember Death]

October 14 street date. Fast, technical, melodic: those are just a few words that the punk rock community uses to describe MUTE’s music. Considered by many to be a crucial staple in the skate punk world, the band has spent the last 18 years taking a 100% DIY approach to bringing its music to the masses! Boasting four albums - Blueprints (2001), Sleepers (2004), The Raven (2008) and Thunderblast(2011) - over 2 million MUTE fans have watched one of the band’s official music videos. MUTE has played more than 600 concerts in over 25 countries in North America, South America, Asia, and Europe: from small indie venues to the main stage of some of the world’s most prestigious international festivals! The quartet was fortunate enough to tour with famous punk bands like Rise Against, NOFX and Lagwagon and to share the stage with legendary artists like Bad Religion and The Offspring. Tireless and faithful to its devoted and hardworking DIY ethics, MUTE is still going strong. With this 5th album on its way and a lot more touring to come, MUTE is, and will remain, a force to be reckoned with in the punk rock world!
Nekromantix [A Symphony Of Wolf Tones & Ghost Notes]

October 21 street date. NEKROMANTIX is a musical unearthing of the biggest themes from the greatest works of monster, zombie, vampire, werewolf and b-horror fiction; ripped from literature, comic book pages or classic celluloid. NEKROMANTIX chases a darkly romantic muse with an even darker humor. A Symphony of Wolf Tones & Ghost Notes broadens the NEKROMANTIX legacy with expansive ambition that never sacrifices the trio’s inherent grittiness, furiously stoking and reshaping the flames of the creative vision begun in Denmark with legendary labels like Nervous Records, through the band’s master classes in punk n’ roll albums stateside with Hellcat Records, the label cofounded by Tim Armstrong and Brett Gurewitz. Armed with his signature coffn bass, chilling baritone, monstrous expressions and ten-stories-tall haircut, Kim Nekroman has earned tremendous respect, admiration and goodwill from a fiercely dedicated legion of hard-partiers, rabble-rousers, well-meaning degenerates, grease monkeys, outlaw bikers, nostalgic tastemakers and forward-thinking punks. It’s a crew of supporters as diverse as the otherwise classic and timeless music the Danish-born California transplant has unleashed as leader of NEKROMANTIX. Nekroman has been joined by skilled guitarist Francisco Mesa for nearly a decade now, with drummer Adam Guerrero bringing a fresh injection of passionate enthusiasm to the band in 2014. A Symphony of Wolf Tones & Ghost Notes is a fertile proving ground for a reenergized lineup that fans of the band have already loved for two years. New songs like “Glow in the Dark,” “War Bats” and “Resting Witch Face” are instant classics, standing mightily alongside the greatest NEKROMANTIX songs enduring in their set list. To their dedicated army of supporters around the world and across every dimension, NEKROMANTIX stands tall among the ghosts in rock n’ roll’s undead cemetery.
Newman, Colin [A-Z]

October 28 street date. Colin Newman’s early 80’s solo albums, originally released on Beggars Banquet / 4AD, now re-released on his own new imprint Sentient Sonics. The vinyl editions have been unavailable for many years—remastered original albums on single LP. The CD versions of the 3 remastered albums are accompanied by a 2nd CD of extra tracks, b-sides & demos - quite a lot of which have never been released - released as double digipacks. These albums were recorded and released between 1980 & 1982 in a “post 154” rush of activity. While all the albums bear the name Colin Newman they differ in that A-Z & Not To were recorded as “band” albums with Colin being joined by Wire’s Robert Grey, Mike Thorne (who also produced, as he had the first 3 Wire albums) & Desmond Simmons on A-Z and Robert, Desmond & Simon Gillham on Not To. provisionally entitled the singing fish was more an “actual” solo album in that everything was played by himself. Colin produced the latter 2 albums with Steve Parker engineering.
NOFX [First Ditch Effort]

October 7 street date. What’s really left to say about NOFX? For over thirty years the reigning kings of punk rock have remained relevant by continuing to push the boundaries of their music and lyrics in a way that’s as endearing as it is infectious. For that reason it’s remarkably apt that the band’s latest LP First Ditch Effort is also their thirteenth, because ominous black clouds hang over this collection of songs that see frontman/bassist Fat Mike exploring self-loathing and mortality in a more raw and honest way than he ever has before. Mike credits much of this to the writing process behind NOFX: The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories, the band’s New York Times Bestselling memoir that forced him to confront his ghosts and revisit his past in ways that weren’t always comfortable. Additionally, having focused so much energy on writing songs for a Broadway musical over the past few years, Fat Mike’s songwriting on First Ditch Effort benefits from a similarly nuanced and varied approach, while simultaneously spitting out all the pent up angst and aggression that was necessarily reserved for NOFX songs. Guided by the collaborative influence of producer Cameron Webb (Motorhead, Alkaline Trio, Social Distortion, Pennywise), the album busts out of the gate with the amped up “Six Years on Dope” and never looks back. From the ultra-melodic word-play of “Oxy Moronic” to the charging desperation of “I Don’t Like Me Anymore”, First Ditch Effort flexes the broad spectrum of NOFX’s abilities and delivers on the musicianship, wit, and element of surprise that fans have come to expect. (LP includes a digital download of album)
NxWorries (Knxwledge & Anderson .Paak) [Yes Lawd! (2LP + download card)]

October 21 street date. Knx landed on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly ("Momma") after the Aftermath MC heard one his beats on Knx's Bandcamp-culling Anthology release. And it was NxWorries' first single, the unforgettable "Suede," that got Dr. Dre's attention, earning .Paak's no fewer than eight appearances on the Compton album and, ultimately, a deal with Aftermath. YES LAWD! As temping as it may be to just let that exclamation suffice as your sole introduction to NxWorries, we should go a little deeper. The men at the heart of this LP - soul styler Anderson .Paak and loop beast Knxwledge - make an exceedingly clean pair, even as they deal almost entirely in the gritty: vocals that sound lived in for a couple of lifetimes; beats that kick up dust as they bump; and an 18-track set that plays like a mixtape merging skits, songs, and snippets into a package of fluid groove and rough-cut rap 'n' soul gems. You may have heard these two out in the world, on their own or sprinkling some of their musical gold dust on someone else's songs, but this is what happens when .Paak and Knx get home, lay back, light up, and let it go.
Pallbearer [Fear & Fury (Ltd/B-Side Etching)]

October 21 street date. Pallbearer’s latest is a limited collectible 12-inch one-sided EP featuring three songs on one side and a designed etching on the other. The three songs are a reprised / re-mastered version of the band’s single Fear & Fury, previously released as part of Decibel Magazine’s Flexi Series, which coincided with the band’s appearance on last year’s Decibel Magazine Tour. The other two exclusive tracks are covers of Black Sabbath’s “Over and Over” and Type O Negative’s “Love You To Death.” Presented in a special die-cut jacket with a designed insert !
Paz, Vinnie [The Cornerstone Of The Corner Store]

October 28 street date. Vinnie Paz, the dynamic frontman of Jedi Mind Tricks and orchestrator of the supergroup Army of the Pharaohs, returns with his third full-length solo album, The Cornerstone of the Corner Store. After more than 20 years in the game, Paz once again demonstrates his craft with the acumen and reverence of a well-schooled veteran. Independently released on his own imprint, Enemy Soil Records, The Cornerstone of the Corner Store is the culmination of a lifetime of dedication. According to Paz, the sound and aesthetic of Cornerstone is a heavy dose of grit and grime; “It’s a dirty record by design. It’s an homage to that era I grew up in.” Indeed, Cornerstone is filled with the type of ferocious rhymes and snarling delivery that the Philadelphia MC is known for. The growl is thick, the vocal weaponry is heavy, and Paz delivers each track with his unique blend of raw street gospel and philosophical consciousness. Features many excellent guests including Ghostface Killah, A.G. & O.C., Demoz, Conway, Ransom, Eamon, Hus Kingpin & Smoovth, Ras Kass, Jakk Frost and Malik B. LP version to follow 11/25/16.
Planes Mistaken For Stars [Prey]

October 21 street date. Planes Mistaken For Stars formed in Peoria, Illinois in 1997 and relocated to Denver Colorado in 1999. From the outset they were an artistic anomaly; carrying both a worn rust belt heart a warm midwestern soul. Collectively they combined different kinds of musical rebellion; hardcore aggression, punk energy, and gritty rock n’ roll spirit into their own special noise. Ultimately laying the blueprint for today’s emotional punk rock resurgence. “Prey” is the long awaited new album from Planes Mistaken For Stars. Produced and engineered by Sanford Parker (Wovenhand, Leviathan, Yob), “Prey” is a beautifully haunting return to form. In need of isolation to finish writing the album, founder Gared O’Donnell took to the road alone. Instead of finding a predictable muse, he found himself driving deep into the crumbling heart of middle America. There, Gared took up residence in decrepit motels, finding inspiration in the descending darkness surrounding him. Chaotic opener “Dementia Americana” serves as a rude awakening with the lyrical crescendo of “Wake Up!” being shouted over and over again. It’s as if the creators are fighting to emerge from the eternal tumble of a nightmare. From there, the next five songs are seemingly instant Planes Mistaken For Stars classics; “Til’ It Clicks”, “Riot Season”, “F*cking Tenderness”, “She Who Steps”, and “Clean Up Mean”. All of them are multi-layered, melodic, and infectious in a way that only they can be. These lead to the touching “Black Rabbit”; a stark acoustic number that shows Gared at his most vulnerable. “Pan In Flames” and “Enemy Blinds” then creep into view. Two powerful songs explore almost apocalyptic musical territory. These usher in the jaw dropping closer “Alabaster Cello” which ends with the lyrical mantra of “Now We Wake...”. Signaling that the figurative slumber is over for this off kilter and brilliant cult status band.
Samson, John K. [Winter Wheat (2LP)]

October 21 street date. Singer/songwriter John K. Samson enlists the rhythm section from his renowned band The Weakerthans for much of his second solo album, Winter Wheat. Inspired by the search for connection and community, his hometown of Winnipeg, and our individual and collective struggles with addictions to drugs, screens, and fossil fuels - Winter Wheat is a sprawling, masterful and timely work by a writer at the peak of his powers. Winter Wheat was produced in garages and homes through a Winnipeg winter by Samson’s partner and collaborator, Christine Fellows, and his Weakerthans co-founder and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Jason Tait, and mixed in the spring in Toronto by Robbie Lackritz (Bahamas, Feist). The spare and thoughtful arrangements also feature Greg Smith of The Weakerthans on electric bass, Ashley Au on double and electric bass, Leanne Zacharias on cello, and Shotgun Jimmie on electric guitar. Like the crop itself, which is planted in the fall, sprouts, goes dormant through months of snow and rises in the spring, Winter Wheat is a determined, beautiful, resilient response to difficult and extraordinary times. Double Vinyl includes three sides of music and an etching on Side D. For fans of the Weakerthans, Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, Elliott Smith, and Built to Spill.

soundtrack [Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (Ryuichi Sakamoto)]

October 21 street date. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s legendary score is finally being reissued. The LP version of the album is pressed on 180 gram vinyl and housed in a tip-on gatefold jacket featuring beautiful new artwork by Laurent Durieux. A download card for a digital version of the album is also included. Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, directed by Nagisa Oshima and starring David Bowie as well as Sakamoto, was a landmark release of 1983. The movie follows a rebellious South African soldier in a Japanese prison camp during World War II and the complex, often conflicting feelings of the young Japanese camp captain. It is also notable for being the first film scored by Sakamoto, earning him the 1983 BAFTA Award for Best Film Music and setting him on a career path in movie music that has spanned four decades and an Oscar win. Milan Records is pleased to be rereleasing the beloved score to Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence under the “Nicolas Winding Refn Presents” series, which aims at releasing quality soundtracks to cult and important films on vinyl. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s timeless orchestral cues sound as crisp and full as when they were recorded. The soundtrack also includes the song “Forbidden Colours”, an adaptation of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’s main theme with vocals by David Sylvian which was an international hit on its original release. Sakamoto is a highly regarded composer & member of Yellow Magic Orchestra. Earlier this year, Milan put out Sakamoto & Alva Noto's score to the hit film The Revenant, to great appraise. Also keep watch for the recent Milan issue of Sakamoto's score for Yoji Yamada's film Nagasaki: Memories of My Son.
Toro Y Moi [Live From Trona (2LP)]

November 4 street date. First 2,200 copies on limited edition pink vinyl !! Includes free digital download with 50% discount code for Vimeo concert film. Following extensive touring behind What For?, his fourth studio album as Toro Y Moi, acclaimed musician Chaz Bundick brought the band to the middle of the Mojave Desert in April 2016 to play a special concert. Live from Trona documents this experience, recorded live beneath the geological wonders known as the Trona Pinnacles, which formed thousands of years ago in what used to be a prehistoric lake. The album features unique live arrangements of songs from across the band’s catalog, new music, and an expanded band line-up. On the congas, Bay Area multi-instrumentalist Brijean Murphy adds a layer of rhythm, switching between propulsion and deep atmosphere. And for a brand new song, “JBS,” the group is joined by tourmates The Mattson 2. This collaboration between Bundick and the Mattson twins takes on a classic groove with a jazz fusion approach. For the film, nine-time Vimeo Staff Pick director Harry Israelson chose to break the fourth wall, revealing the filmmaking process by making equipment, lights, and crew visible at all times. With no audience in attendance and a spectacular natural environment that feels otherworldly, the film pays homage to rock films of a previous era. As the sun sets behind the pinnacles, the supernatural setting seamlessly weaves together with the 13 psychedelic tracks, all recorded on site over the course of an entire day. Through the use of hand-drawn animations and behind-the-scenes VHS footage, Live from Trona offers viewers a surreal concert experience, placing them front row at a private Toro Y Moi show." NOTE: Look for TORO Y MOI on a North American headline tour in November !
V/A [Bobo YeYe: Belle Epoque In Upper Volta (3LP)]

October 28 street date. From his studio in central Bobo-Dioulasso, photographer Sory Sanlé documented a nation’s transformation from colonial foothold to cosmopolitan oasis. Bobo Yeye: Belle Epoque in Upper Volta provides an intimate look into the landlocked nation’s pop culture explosion of the 1970s. A melange of community elders and emboldened youth spill from the brightly lit confines of Sanlé’s Volta Photo into the dimly lit nightclubs of Upper Volta’s cultural capital. Accompanying this hardbound monograph are dozens of rare and evocative recordings spread over three discs by Bobo-Dioulasso’s musical titans: Volta Jazz, Dafra Star, Echo Del Africa, and Les Imbattables Léopards.
