Rife with restaurants, shops, and cafes, it's a hangout 'hood for the city's youth, whose style is confined to uniforms from elementary school through to high school graduation. And, perhaps to rebel from such strict sameness, they spend their weekends seeing how far they can push the limits. One of the oldest and most pervasive Harajuku style groups is Decora, characterized by a pursuit of kawaii, or "cuteness," which is expressed in massive piles of hair clips, face bandaids, creative layering, and a mishmash of colors and textures. Don't let "cute" confuse you: There's nothing delicate or elegant about Decora. It's bright, it's loud, and it's in your face (or rather, on your face, via a Hello Kitty bandaid). Though the style can appear as frivolous as a Halloween costume, there's a real statement behind the bevy of barrettes. In the face of pervasive group-mindedness, a rigid social order, and cultural reticence, the Decora have figured out a way to break free. Harajuku

Harajuku (原宿, listen ) is a district in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.

Harajuku is the common name given to a geographic area spreading from Harajuku Station to Omotesando, corresponding on official maps of Shibuya ward as Jingūmae 1 chōme to 4 chōme. In popular reference Harajuku also encompasses many smaller backstreets such as Takeshita Street and Cat Street spreading between Sendagaya in the north to Shibuya in the south.

Harajuku is known internationally as a center of Japanese youth culture and fashion. Shopping and dining options include many small, youth oriented, independent boutiques and cafés, but the neighborhood also attracts many larger international chain stores with high-end luxury merchandisers extensively represented along Omotesando.

Harajuku Station on the JR East Yamanote Line and Meiji-jingumae 'Harajuku' Station served by the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line and Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line also act as gateways to local attractions such as the Meiji Shrine, Yoyogi Park and Yoyogi National Gymnasium, making Harajuku and its environs one of the most popular destinations in Tokyo for both domestic and international tourists.

Rife with restaurants, shops, and cafes, it's a hangout 'hood for the city's youth, whose style is confined to uniforms from elementary school through to high school graduation. And, perhaps to rebel from such strict sameness, they spend their weekends seeing how far they can push the limits. One of the oldest and most pervasive Harajuku style groups is Decora, characterized by a pursuit of kawaii, or "cuteness," which is expressed in massive piles of hair clips, face bandaids, creative layering, and a mishmash of colors and textures. Don't let "cute" confuse you: There's nothing delicate or elegant about Decora. It's bright, it's loud, and it's in your face (or rather, on your face, via a Hello Kitty bandaid). Though the style can appear as frivolous as a Halloween costume, there's a real statement behind the bevy of barrettes. In the face of pervasive group-mindedness, a rigid social order, and cultural reticence, the Decora have figured out a way to break free. In the first episode of our new documentary series, Style Out There, our host Asha Leo travels to Harajuku to meet with street fashion superstars, like 90884 designer Kurebayashi, Junnyan, and Shoichi Aoki, the founder of FRUiTS magazine, to peel back the rainbow-colored stickers and uncover the depth behind Decora. One of the oldest and most pervasive Harajuku style groups is Decora, characterized by a pursuit of kawaii, or "cuteness," which is expressed in massive piles of hair clips, face bandaids, creative layering, and a mishmash of colors and textures. Don't let "cute" confuse you: There's nothing delicate or elegant about Decora. It's bright, it's loud, and it's in your face (or rather, on your face, via a Hello Kitty bandaid). Though the style can appear as frivolous as a Halloween costume, there's a real statement behind the bevy of barrettes. In the face of pervasive group-mindedness, a rigid social order, and cultural reticence, the Decora have figured out a way to break free. So here there is my recommendation, an awesome tour of 5 of the best places in Tokyo, all at a walking distance! Obviously there are more than 5 things to do in Tokyo and each person has their own favorite places to visit. That being said, if you are a first timer in Japan, I recommend you spend half a day to do this tour. SERIOUSLY. Do this and you'll save a lot of time. Unless you want to see Sumo or the fish market, but if you are around my age, you will love this tour. You see the beautiful Japanese Meiji Shrine, see the crazy young Takeshitadori, the cool...

So here there is my recommendation, an awesome tour of 5 of the best places in Tokyo, all at a walking distance! Obviously there are more than 5 things to do in Tokyo and each person has their own favorite places to visit. That being said, if you are a first timer in Japan, I recommend you spend half a day to do this tour. SERIOUSLY. Do this and you'll save a lot of time. Unless you want to see Sumo or the fish market, but if you are around my age, you will love this tour. You see the beautiful Japanese Meiji Shrine, see the crazy young Takeshitadori, the cool&hip; Harajuku Cat Street, get lost in Shibuya crossing, walk through the insane Center Street in Shibuya, and check out a really cool shop in Shibuya called LOFT for some shopping. The best way of seeing the crossing is from above, and you could spend all day testing out the many surrounding viewpoints YOYOGI PARK: And just so you know, we zig zagged across the street like 20 times for fun before getting lost in the city and eventually ending up in the nearby Yoyogi park. The park is one of Tokyo’s largest, and it’s a prime spot to hang out and people watch, especially during the cherry blossom season. We were there in March so we were a little early but luckily we still got a preview. We ending up spending the rest of the day walking around getting a taste of life in #Japan and it’s cast of characters that come out to play on a beautiful and chilly Sunday afternoon. It was absolutely perfect. Robot restaurant: Ah yes, the robot restaurant.. Tokyo’s over the top, seizure inducing totally ridiculous, sensory overloaded cabaret show with robots. Go they said, you’ll have a great time they said… but what they failed mention is that the place is located smack dab in the middle of Shinjuku’s red light district, which is a good place to be if you’re a single 20 something out for a night on the town, but not so much if you’re in your married, draped in camera gear and trying to film a #travel documentary. Once we shook that weirdness, we made our way over to the restaurant lobby to pick up our tickets… ordering tickets online is a good way to save a little money if you do decide to come here… oh and you might want to bring earplugs, also don't have epilepsy. Rife with restaurants, shops, and cafes, it's a hangout 'hood for the city's youth, whose style is confined to uniforms from elementary school through to high school graduation. And, perhaps to rebel from such strict sameness, they spend their weekends seeing how far they can push the limits. One of the oldest and most pervasive Harajuku style groups is Decora, characterized by a pursuit of kawaii, or "cuteness," which is expressed in massive piles of hair clips, face bandaids, creative layering, and a mishmash of colors and textures. Don't let "cute" confuse you: There's nothing delicate or elegant about Decora. It's bright, it's loud, and it's in your face (or rather, on your face, via a Hello Kitty bandaid). Though the style can appear as frivolous as a Halloween costume, there's a real statement behind the bevy of barrettes. In the face of pervasive group-mindedness, a rigid social order, and cultural reticence, the Decora have figured out a way to break free. So here there is my recommendation, an awesome tour of 5 of the best places in Tokyo, all at a walking distance! Obviously there are more than 5 things to do in Tokyo and each person has their own favorite places to visit. That being said, if you are a first timer in Japan, I recommend you spend half a day to do this tour. SERIOUSLY. Do this and you'll save a lot of time. Unless you want to see Sumo or the fish market, but if you are around my age, you will love this tour. You see the beautiful Japanese Meiji Shrine, see the crazy young Takeshitadori, the cool&hip; Harajuku Cat Street, get lost in Shibuya crossing, walk through the insane Center Street in Shibuya, and check out a really cool shop in Shibuya called LOFT for some shopping. Buy us Lunch at: http://tinyurl.com/donate-to-the-camps SCRIPT: SHIBUYA: Just one stop over from Harajuka on the Yamanote line is Shibuya station, one of Tokyo’s busiest railways stations and gateway to the famous “Shibuya scramble” - when the lights changes, hundreds of people cross this intersection at the same time and you’re swept up in the sea of humanity. The best way of seeing the crossing is from above, and you could spend all day testing out the many surrounding viewpoints YOYOGI PARK: And just so you know, we zig zagged across the street like 20 times for fun before getting lost in the city and eventually ending up in the nearby Yoyogi park. The park is one of Tokyo’s largest, and it’s a prime spot to hang out and people watch, especially during the cherry blossom season. We were there in March so we were a little early but luckily we still got a preview. We ending up spending the rest of the day walking around getting a taste of life in #Japan and it’s cast of characters that come out to play on a beautiful and chilly Sunday afternoon. It was absolutely perfect. Robot restaurant: Ah yes, the robot restaurant.. Tokyo’s over the top, seizure inducing totally ridiculous, sensory overloaded cabaret show with robots. Go they said, you’ll have a great time they said… but what they failed mention is that the place is located smack dab in the middle of Shinjuku’s red light district, which is a good place to be if you’re a single 20 something out for a night on the town, but not so much if you’re in your married, draped in camera gear and trying to film a #travel documentary. Once we shook that weirdness, we made our way over to the restaurant lobby to pick up our tickets… ordering tickets online is a good way to save a little money if you do decide to come here… oh and you might want to bring earplugs, also don't have epilepsy.
