While free trade has become unpopular in some parts of the world, the presidents of the Pacific Alliance trade bloc make the case for its benefits. Chile, Colombia, and Peru's presidents, along with Mexico's economy secretary, took on the subject at an AS/COA event on September 21 during their visit to New York for the 71st UN General Assembly. "Opening up economies has been extremely productive to the world," said recently elected Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. "We've had the best period of growth in the last 50 years."
In this highlights video of the panel, the leaders also discussed their hopes for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), as well as their views on the U.S. election. Mexico's Ildefonso Guajardo emphasized the importance of maintaining stable U.S.-Mexico ties, saying: "If we have to talk to the devil to guarantee the safety and future of the Mexican people in Mexico and the U.S., we'll talk to the devil."

The Pacific Alliance concluded its 9th summit in Chile on July 1, with calls running high to forge closer ties with Mercosur, or the Southern Common Market.
"Seeking the convergence of the two different mechanisms of integration that share similar goals must be a reality," said Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.
(Soundbite) Rosendo Fraga, Argentine Political Analyst
"Argentina has already announced that it formalized request to join the Pacific Alliance as an observer country like Paraguay, Uruguay, the United States and China. Brazil has not yet given a precise definition in this direction, but it is clear that this is going to happen."
In May, Mercosur representatives agreed to seek space for developing common initiatives on trade and integration-related matters with the Pacific alliance.
The alliance is composed of Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, while Mercosur is a regional trade bloc grouping Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela and Bolivia.

"Brazil and Argentina are very interested in being part of the Pacific Alliance, because they know that if they do not come into the club, they will not be able to be more attractive of investment."
The intention of Brazil and Argentina certainly triggered concerns from other Mercosur members.

"Uruguay comes naturally more prone to include Brazil and Argentina in the Pacific Alliance. Observers already said that there will soon be a position for Argentina in the alliance. This I think will lead to a shift in South America, a turn in Mercosur and even the possibility of starting some kind of convergence between Mercosur and the Pacific Alliance."
What is behind such strong motivations, especially for Argentina to firmly play the alliance card?

"I think a Mercosur-Pacific Alliance agreement can emerge as a deal for the common sake of South America. This view must be taken. South America is a region across the Atlantic and the Pacific. Mercosur is basically an Atlantic union and the Pacific Alliance a Pacific one. The integration of the two blocs means much more to the world with a greater relative advantage."
Together the two blocs account for more than 80 percent of the region's foreign trade, and more than 90 percent of Latin America's GDP and flow of foreign direct investment.

"The Pacific Alliance is an organization of trade integration, without political factors. It has no political agenda and intentions, because the entire political agenda is now rooted in other regional bodies such as UNASUR and CELAC at the level of Central America and the Caribbean."

Pacific Ocean
The Pacific Ocean is the largest of the Earth's oceanic divisions. It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean (or, depending on definition, to Antarctica) in the south and is bounded by Asia and Australia in the west and the Americas in the east.
At 165.25 million square kilometers (63.8 million square miles) in area, this largest division of the World Ocean—and, in turn, the hydrosphere—covers about 46% of the Earth's water surface and about one-third of its total surface area, making it larger than all of the Earth's land area combined.
The equator subdivides it into the North Pacific Ocean and South Pacific Ocean, with two exceptions: the Galápagos and Gilbert Islands, while straddling the equator, are deemed wholly within the South Pacific. The Mariana Trench in the western North Pacific is the deepest point in the world, reaching a depth of 10,911 metres (35,797 ft).
The eastern Pacific Ocean was first sighted by Europeans in the early 16th century when Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama in 1513 and discovered the great "southern sea" which he named Mar del Sur. The ocean's current name was coined by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan during the Spanish circumnavigation of the world in 1521, as he encountered favourable winds on reaching the ocean. He called it Mar Pacifico, which in both Portuguese and Spanish means "peaceful sea".

Alliance
An alliance is a relationship among people, groups, or states that have joined together for mutual benefit or to achieve some common purpose, whether or not explicit agreement has been worked out among them. Members of an alliance are called allies. Alliances form in many settings, including political alliances, military alliances, and business alliances. When the term is used in the context of war or armed struggle, such associations may also be called allied powers, especially when discussing World War I or World War II.
A formal military alliance is not required for being perceived as an ally—co-belligerence, fighting alongside someone, is enough. According to this usage, allies become so not when concluding an alliance treaty but when struck by war.
When spelled with a capital "A", the word "Allies" usually denotes the countries who fought together against the Central Powers in World War I (the Allies of World War I), or those who fought against the Axis Powers in World War II (the Allies of World War II). The term has also been used by the United States Army to describe the countries that gave assistance to the South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

While free trade has become unpopular in some parts of the world, the presidents of the Pacific Alliance trade bloc make the case for its benefits. Chile, Colombia, and Peru's presidents, along with Mexico's economy secretary, took on the subject at an AS/COA event on September 21 during their visit to New York for the 71st UN General Assembly. "Opening up economies has been extremely productive to the world," said recently elected Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. "We've had the best period of growth in the last 50 years."
In this highlights video of the panel, the leaders also discussed their hopes for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), as well as their views on the U.S. election. Mexico's Ildefonso Guajardo emphasized the importance of maintaining stable U.S.-Mexico ties, saying: "If we have to talk to the devil to guarantee the safety and future of the Mexican people in Mexico and the U.S., we'll talk to the devil."

Additionally, we take a look at what each member country of the Pacific Alliance stands to gain from the initiative moving forward.
Finally, we examine what must take place in order for the Alliance to successfully complete its initiatives and realize the dream of building a united Latin America rather than falling to the wayside, as so many other Latin American integration initiatives have in the past.

"Seeking the convergence of the two different mechanisms of integration that share similar goals must be a reality," said Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.
(Soundbite) Rosendo Fraga, Argentine Political Analyst
"Argentina has already announced that it formalized request to join the Pacific Alliance as an observer country like Paraguay, Uruguay, the United States and China. Brazil has not yet given a precise definition in this direction, but it is clear that this is going to happen."
In May, Mercosur representatives agreed to seek space for developing common initiatives on trade and integration-related matters with the Pacific alliance.
The alliance is composed of Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, while Mercosur is a regional trade bloc grouping Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela and Bolivia.

"Brazil and Argentina are very interested in being part of the Pacific Alliance, because they know that if they do not come into the club, they will not be able to be more attractive of investment."
The intention of Brazil and Argentina certainly triggered concerns from other Mercosur members.

"Uruguay comes naturally more prone to include Brazil and Argentina in the Pacific Alliance. Observers already said that there will soon be a position for Argentina in the alliance. This I think will lead to a shift in South America, a turn in Mercosur and even the possibility of starting some kind of convergence between Mercosur and the Pacific Alliance."
What is behind such strong motivations, especially for Argentina to firmly play the alliance card?

"I think a Mercosur-Pacific Alliance agreement can emerge as a deal for the common sake of South America. This view must be taken. South America is a region across the Atlantic and the Pacific. Mercosur is basically an Atlantic union and the Pacific Alliance a Pacific one. The integration of the two blocs means much more to the world with a greater relative advantage."
Together the two blocs account for more than 80 percent of the region's foreign trade, and more than 90 percent of Latin America's GDP and flow of foreign direct investment.

"The Pacific Alliance is an organization of trade integration, without political factors. It has no political agenda and intentions, because the entire political agenda is now rooted in other regional bodies such as UNASUR and CELAC at the level of Central America and the Caribbean."

In winter, the world’s best surfers collect on Sunset Beach, attracted by spectacular waves, some of which reach as high as the tallest church steeples. On the island of Kaua’i, the Wailua is Hawaii’s only navigable river and it flows through some of the exciting locations which were used for Jurassic Park, Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Blue Hawaii. Two volcanoes dominate the extraordinary island of Maui, which also features sandy beaches, green pastures, dense jungle and a bleak lunar-like landscape. On Waimea Beach in 1778, the English sea captain, James Cook, was the first European to set foot on Hawaiian territory. The Waimea Canyon was referred to by Mark Twain as ‘The Grand Canyon of the Pacific’, a massive gorge which has been carved out of the volcanic landscape by the Waimea River. From a Victorian style station there is the narrow-gauge Sugar Cane Train which travels through the once prolific sugar plantations of Kaanapali. Haleakale is the world’s largest dormant volcano with a crater as large as Manhattan.
