Number 5 - The Wolf Fish
Also known as the Trairao, these fish can grow up to 3 feet long or 1 meter - and weigh up to 40 pounds or 18 Kilos. They're cousins of the Piranha and they've got the teeth prove it! Fisherman often come home with broken equipment after fishing for THESE monsters.
Number 4 - The Vampire Fish
Sometimes called Payara, these fish are Infamous for their humongous teeth. In fact, their fang teeth are so long, they have holes in the upper jaw just so they close their mouth. They use these giant teeth to impale their victims.
Number 3 - The Arapaima
Known as the pirarucu in Brazil, this South America giant is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world. They actually breathe air, and have scales so tough, not even Piranhas can bite through them. Some reach lengths of more than 10 feet (3 meters) and weigh upward of 400 pounds (180 kilograms).
Number 2 - The electric eel
One of most surprising things about this monster is - it’s not really an eel. It’s actually a knife fish, more closely related to Catfish rather than true Eels. They get their ability to jolt you with up to 900 Volts of electric shock through several organs that make up four-fifths of their body. This shock is strong enough to stop a human heart and there have been reports of people being killed by these monsters.
Number 1 - The Piranha
Now, we move on to one of the most well-known and most feared fish in the world - the Piranha. There are actually two different types of piranha found in the Amazon - the Red-bellied Piranha and the Black Piranha. The Black Piranha, weighing up to over 8 pounds, is much larger than the Red-bellied Piranha, however, the red belly is general considered the most dangerous. And that’s the one you see in most of the movies…

The amazon is filled with all kinds of river monsters and we all know the Piranha is the most famous. But one of the biggest river monsters in the Amazon, and one of my favorites, is the one they call the Arapaima.
Arapaima are these long sleek looking fish that can grow up to 2 and half meters ( or around 8 feet). The record weight this monster is 200 KG or about 440 LBs, but on average they are about half that.
Arapaima are considered to be an ancient fish - scientists estimate they are descendants of fish that date back more than 250 million years.
One of the reasons I think they’ve been so successful at survival are these amazing armor-like scales that cover their body. These scales are super light, but so strong, not even Piranha can bite through them.
Today I’m with my my friend and pro fisherman Steve Townson, sometimes called the fish finder. We’re deep in the Amazon where we hope to catch one of these monsters for a close up and personal encounter…
STEVE: What we’re going to do is paddle up there where there is a lake, see if we can pick up an Arapaima or two…
As it turns out, Arapaima prefer Lakes & small creeks to Rivers…
STEVE: They prefer this, they like a nice quiet life… protect themselves from Predators because they are really easy to catch.
One of the other reasons Arapaima are easy to catch is because they are air breathers.
Steve: Because they come up - gulp air and go down. So you cast out in front of them and bang!
It all sounded like we could get this done quick, but no sooner did we get to the lake, than it started to rain and lightening. That’s not good when you are in aluminum boat… we had to take cover…
But like I always say, at BillsChannel, when the going gets tough, the tough reach for the cooler.
It was too dangerous for us to stay out on the open lake, so Steve decided to explore a small creek.
It wasn’t easy going, but the rain stopped, and gave Steve a better chance of spotting an Arapaima coming up for air.
A few bubbles appeared next to his float. That’s when Steve knew he had come to the right place.
Steve: I knew he was here…
Arapaima are gentle creatures but they can be very dangerous…. Steve and his guide have to be very careful… they can launch at you and inflict some serious damage.
Once we got the thing up close you could see the spectacular scales the Arapaima armors itself with. I can see why scientists are studying the scales to see how something so thin can be so strong.

The Amazon River in South America is the largest river by discharge of water in the world, averaging a discharge of about 209,000 cubic meters per second (7,381,000 cu ft/s), greater than the next seven largest independent rivers combined. It is also generally regarded as the second longest river in the world, has the largest drainage basin in the world, about 7,050,000 square kilometres (2,720,000 sq mi), and accounts for approximately one-fifth of the world's total river flow. The portion of the river's drainage basin in Brazil alone is larger than any other river's basin. You know just when I thought we had covered all the giant piranha species, along comes one I have never heard of. My nephew William Barboza from Presbyterian School in Houston.. sent me a text the other day and said he wanted to see the Giant Silver Piranha… I never even heard of these things… but you know what, I think I know somebody who has…
But I know somebody who probably has… The amazon angler and fish finder, Steve Townson.
STEVE: You asked me to find the giant black Piranha and I found it for you. And Now you want me to find the elusive giant silver Piranha… Well we’re going to give it a try here on the Rio Vichada in Colombia. Lodge owner Alejo Diaz is going to help me in my quest…
Now to be honest, I couldn’t find much information on this giant beast before my trip. But according to Steve and Alejo they are very real and grow as big, if not bigger than the black piranha.
Alejo said they could best be found in some of the lagoons not far from his lodge.
That all sounded easy enough but in reality, it was a pretty tough slog. The area was suffering from a drought and the water was way too low for the boat’s engine.
I was starting to think we came a long way for nothing…. I mean, even Steve was out huffing and puffing.
I was waiting for someone to get stung by a freshwater stingray… they’re famous for hanging out in these little creeks… and believe me, they do live up to their nickname “Make grown men cry.”
The lagoon was much bigger than I thought it was going to be... But as soon as Alejo and Steve get their hooks in the water - it was action time ladies and gentlemen
The place was full of all sorts of fish… including huge 3 bar peacock and loads of Payara also known as Vampire fish…
We were just about to break for lunch when Alejo got something different on the line. When he got the fish closer, he said it was the Piranha Plateada -- the one we were looking for…
Now that I had a picture of it, I was able to do a little more research. Based on comparisons with other piranha that seemed to match it, it’s called a Serrasalmus manueli Piranha.
According to Piranha Info.com this species is the largest species of Piranha known to man. It can easily grow up to 20 Inches long or about 50 centimeters. And it can weigh up to 12 lbs or 5 and half kilos!

I was waiting for someone to get stung by a freshwater stingray… they’re famous for hanging out in these little creeks… and believe me, they do live up to their nickname “Make grown men cry.” The lagoon was much bigger than I thought it was going to be... But as soon as Alejo and Steve get their hooks in the water - it was action time ladies and gentlemen The place was full of all sorts of fish… including huge 3 bar peacock and loads of Payara also known as Vampire fish… We were just about to break for lunch when Alejo got something different on the line. When he got the fish closer, he said it was the Piranha Plateada -- the one we were looking for… Now that I had a picture of it, I was able to do a little more research. Based on comparisons with other piranha that seemed to match it, it’s called a Serrasalmus manueli Piranha. According to Piranha Info.com this species is the largest species of Piranha known to man. It can easily grow up to 20 Inches long or about 50 centimeters. And it can weigh up to 12 lbs or 5 and half kilos! And now, how about a little pop quiz. Are you ready? Ok here we go. EPIC AMAZON RIVER MONSTER
The amazon is filled with all kinds of river monsters and we all know the Piranha is the most famous. But one of the biggest river monsters in the Amazon, and one of my favorites, is the one they call the Arapaima. Arapaima are these long sleek looking fish that can grow up to 2 and half meters ( or around 8 feet). The record weight this monster is 200 KG or about 440 LBs, but on average they are about half that. Arapaima are considered to be an ancient fish - scientists estimate they are descendants of fish that date back more than 250 million years. One of the reasons I think they’ve been so successful at survival are these amazing armor-like scales that cover their body. Number 5 - The Wolf Fish
Also known as the Trairao, these fish can grow up to 3 feet long or 1 meter - and weigh up to 40 pounds or 18 Kilos. They're cousins of the Piranha and they've got the teeth prove it! Fisherman often come home with broken equipment after fishing for THESE monsters.
Number 4 - The Vampire Fish
Sometimes called Payara, these fish are Infamous for their humongous teeth. In fact, their fang teeth are so long, they have holes in the upper jaw just so they close their mouth. They use these giant teeth to impale their victims.
Number 3 - The Arapaima
Known as the pirarucu in Brazil, this South America giant is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world. They actually breathe air, and have scales so tough, not even Piranhas can bite through them. Some reach lengths of more than 10 feet (3 meters) and weigh upward of 400 pounds (180 kilograms).
Number 2 - The electric eel
One of most surprising things about this monster is - it’s not really an eel. It’s actually a knife fish, more closely related to Catfish rather than true Eels. They get their ability to jolt you with up to 900 Volts of electric shock through several organs that make up four-fifths of their body. This shock is strong enough to stop a human heart and there have been reports of people being killed by these monsters.

Now, we move on to one of the most well-known and most feared fish in the world - the Piranha. There are actually two different types of piranha found in the Amazon - the Red-bellied Piranha and the Black Piranha. The amazon is filled with all kinds of river monsters and we all know the Piranha is the most famous. But one of the biggest river monsters in the Amazon, and one of my favorites, is the one they call the Arapaima.

One of the reasons I think they’ve been so successful at survival are these amazing armor-like scales that cover their body. These scales are super light, but so strong, not even Piranha can bite through them.
Today I’m with my my friend and pro fisherman Steve Townson, sometimes called the fish finder. We’re deep in the Amazon where we hope to catch one of these monsters for a close up and personal encounter…
STEVE: What we’re going to do is paddle up there where there is a lake, see if we can pick up an Arapaima or two…
As it turns out, Arapaima prefer Lakes & small creeks to Rivers…
STEVE: They prefer this, they like a nice quiet life… protect themselves from Predators because they are really easy to catch.
One of the other reasons Arapaima are easy to catch is because they are air breathers.
Steve: Because they come up - gulp air and go down. So you cast out in front of them and bang!
It all sounded like we could get this done quick, but no sooner did we get to the lake, than it started to rain and lightening. That’s not good when you are in aluminum boat… we had to take cover…
But like I always say, at BillsChannel, when the going gets tough, the tough reach for the cooler.
It was too dangerous for us to stay out on the open lake, so Steve decided to explore a small creek.
It wasn’t easy going, but the rain stopped, and gave Steve a better chance of spotting an Arapaima coming up for air.
A few bubbles appeared next to his float. That’s when Steve knew he had come to the right place.
Steve: I knew he was here…
Arapaima are gentle creatures but they can be very dangerous…. Steve and his guide have to be very careful… they can launch at you and inflict some serious damage.
Once we got the thing up close you could see the spectacular scales the Arapaima armors itself with. I can see why scientists are studying the scales to see how something so thin can be so strong.

The Amazon River in South America is the largest river by discharge of water in the world, averaging a discharge of about 209,000 cubic meters per second (7,381,000 cu ft/s), greater than the next seven largest independent rivers combined. It is also generally regarded as the second longest river in the world, has the largest drainage basin in the world, about 7,050,000 square kilometres (2,720,000 sq mi), and accounts for approximately one-fifth of the world's total river flow. You know just when I thought we had covered all the giant piranha species, along comes one I have never heard of. My nephew William Barboza from Presbyterian School in Houston.. sent me a text the other day and said he wanted to see the Giant Silver Piranha… I never even heard of these things… but you know what, I think I know somebody who has…
But I know somebody who probably has… The amazon angler and fish finder, Steve Townson.
STEVE: You asked me to find the giant black Piranha and I found it for you. And Now you want me to find the elusive giant silver Piranha… Well we’re going to give it a try here on the Rio Vichada in Colombia. Lodge owner Alejo Diaz is going to help me in my quest…
Now to be honest, I couldn’t find much information on this giant beast before my trip. But according to Steve and Alejo they are very real and grow as big, if not bigger than the black piranha.
Alejo said they could best be found in some of the lagoons not far from his lodge.
That all sounded easy enough but in reality, it was a pretty tough slog. The area was suffering from a drought and the water was way too low for the boat’s engine.
I was starting to think we came a long way for nothing…. I mean, even Steve was out huffing and puffing.
I was waiting for someone to get stung by a freshwater stingray… they’re famous for hanging out in these little creeks… and believe me, they do live up to their nickname “Make grown men cry.”
The lagoon was much bigger than I thought it was going to be... But as soon as Alejo and Steve get their hooks in the water - it was action time ladies and gentlemen
The place was full of all sorts of fish… including huge 3 bar peacock and loads of Payara also known as Vampire fish…
We were just about to break for lunch when Alejo got something different on the line. When he got the fish closer, he said it was the Piranha Plateada -- the one we were looking for…
Now that I had a picture of it, I was able to do a little more research. Based on comparisons with other piranha that seemed to match it, it’s called a Serrasalmus manueli Piranha.
According to Piranha Info.com this species is the largest species of Piranha known to man. It can easily grow up to 20 Inches long or about 50 centimeters. And it can weigh up to 12 lbs or 5 and half kilos!
And now, how about a little pop quiz. Are you ready? Ok here we go. Piranha’s are known to have a really strong bite but is it the strongest bite in the world? What do you think?

In recent years, a highway has made further inroads into the region, while Brazil has sought to keep the Amazon basin free from foreign exploitation. However today, the Amazon is ecologically endangered from reckless deforestation and a lack of public understanding of the importance of this remote region.

The area covered by the Amazon River and its tributaries more than triples between the dry season and wet season over the course of a year. In an average dry season, 110,000 square kilometers of land are water-covered, while in the wet season the flooded area of the Amazon basin rises to 350,000 square kilometers. At its widest point the Amazon River can be 6.8 miles (11 kilometers) wide during the dry season, but during the rainy season when the Amazon River floods the surrounding plains it can be up to 24.8 miles (40 kilometers) wide.
The quantity of freshwater released by the Amazon into the Atlantic Ocean is enormous: up to 300,000 square meters per second in the rainy season. The Amazon is responsible for one-fifth of the total volume of freshwater entering the oceans worldwide. Offshore of the mouth of the Amazon, potable water can be drawn from the ocean while still out of sight of the coastline, and the salinity of the ocean is notably lower a hundred miles out to sea.
The Amazon estuary is over 202 miles (325 kilometers) wide. The main river (which is between approximately one and six miles wide) is navigable for large ocean steamers to Manaus, Brazil, more than 900 miles (1,500 kilometers) upriver from the mouth. Smaller ocean vessels of 3,000 tons can reach as far as Iquitos, Peru, 2,250 miles (3,600 kilometers) from the sea. Smaller riverboats can reach 486 miles (780 kilometers) higher as far as Achual Point. Beyond that, small boats frequently ascend to the Pongo de Manseriche, just above Achual Point.
The Amazon drains an area of some 2,722,000 square miles, or nearly 40 percent of South America. It gathers its waters from 5 degrees north latitude to 20 degrees south latitude. Its most remote sources are found on the inter-Andean plateau, just a short distance from the Pacific Ocean; and, after coursing through the interior of Peru and across Brazil, it enters the Atlantic Ocean at the equator. The Amazon has changed its drainage several times, from westward in the early Cenozoic period to its present eastward locomotion following the uplift of the Andes Mountains.

Amazon River Cruise: Adventure Travel in Peru Video Transcript:
Hello from the shores of the Amazon river. This is a pretty cool place to be wouldn't you say? Yeah, this is a bucketlist item for us definitely. So we are currently cruising down the Amazon with Rainforest Cruises. We're going to be spending four days and three nights aboard the Delfin number one. Yeah, and it is a very luxurious boat. We're doing this in style. It is awesome. We're going to give you a tour of the boat and we'd also like to show you some of the really cool excursions that we're going to be doing over these next three to four days. So come along. Let's go.
This feels like yet another episode of MTV cribs. But come on in. We are staying in the Anaconda suite. Pretty cool. No anaconda sighted so far. But basically this is our little terrace. We have a nice balcony with views of the Amazon river. And yeah we can just hang out here, have drinks, read a book, it is pretty cool.
Alright, and let's check out the inside of our room.
Our first afternoon aboard our Amazon Cruise was pretty relaxed and we got to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets ever.
The following morning called for an early start with everyone ready to board the skiff by 6:30 a.m. Our guide had lured us with the promise of wildlife and a delicious breakfast aboard the boat, and thankfully he delivered on both of those.
That morning we saw countless blue and yellow macaws, a school of pink dolphins playfully breaking through the water, and sloths slowly going about their day.
As for breakfast, the captain took us to a secluded lagoon covered in a blanket of water lettuce, where we parked the boat and enjoyed a three course breakfast featuring: fruit-kebabs, chicken and avocado salad, and hot sandwiches. It was the perfect way to start off our day on the Amazon.
So we are back in the jungle. This afternoon we are doing a jungle walking excursion. And we're also going to be doing a canopy walk across a series of suspension bridges. So we're just on the trail. We've got our rubber boots back on.
Meal times were another highlight of our cruise aboard the Delfin I. They had an international menu sure to satisfy every palate, but they also made sure to use Amazonian ingredients and feature Peruvian-inspired dishes at every meal. Every meal was a delight to our foodie taste buds.
So good morning. It is another beautiful day on the Amazon and we've just finished breakfast and we're now heading out on our first excursion of the day. We will be going piranha fishing and if you watched our previous video we already did that at the treehouse; however, I was very unsuccessful while Sam caught the biggest piraña yet.
So we officially ran out of bait for our piranha fishing so we kind of gave up on that activity. But right now we're trying kayaking down one of the smaller tributaries of the Amazon.
I'm the captain of this ship. And that is a scary thought. Cruising down the Amazon.
So we are about to reach the point where the Ucayali River and the Marañón River meet together to form the Amazon. So that moment calls for a toast.
So here is a toast to travels in the Amazon. Salut!
Yeah, so we're visiting this cool kind of little local village. It is called Sanfrancisco. San Francisco. And it has only been around since 1974 so it is just over 40 years old.
So what are you going to do Audrey? Apparently help squeeze sugarcane.

- AMAZON ADVENTURE -
There are certain places on this planet that seem almost like fiction.
Unreachable destinations that you expect to only see in story books and documentaries.
The Amazon Rainforest in northern Brazil was one of those places for me.
So when I had the opportunity to come to Brazil, I wasn't going to miss the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream.
My experience began in the gateway city of Manaus, where the journey into the jungle proved to be a task unto itself...
I took a taxi from the airport down to the city's main harbor.
It was here that had my first glimpse of the incredible size and scope of the Amazon river on ground level.
From here I crossed the river on a small shuttle boat, passing the point where the Rio Negro converges with the Amazon which forms a really cool color divide in the water.
Once on the other side, I passed street vendors selling giant fish and wild fruits, before boarding an old VW wagon.
Past the small towns and giant lilly pads, we drove further away from civilization before making one last transfer into a small motorboat.
As we weaved through the flooded forest, the reality of this experience started to set in!
The Ararinha Jungle Hotel would serve as the launch pad for all my Rainforest adventures.
By day we explored the river and trekked through the Amazon rainforest.
In the water we looked out for exotic birds, hidden lizards and even the rare pink dolphins and on land it was giant spiders, poison dart frogs and all types of monkeys.
While the rare Anaconda and Jaguar were always in the back of my mind, it was the smaller animals that you really had to be aware of.
We would go catch piranha in the shallow waters and then boat out to the middle of the river nearby to swim.
It was a dangerous and beautiful place, and my senses were heightened the entire time.
Throughout the process, Kenrick and the other guides taught me some important skills and techniques for surviving in the jungle. From making weapons and building shelter to finding the best things to eat if you're hungry.
Another side of life in the Amazon, is the close-nit community of people who live along the river. I was expecting to see naked tribes and face-painted cannibals, but that wasn't the case at all.
I had the opportunity to meet and interact with many local residents and despite the remote location, life here seems relatively normal, and it comes with an alluring simplicity and self-sufficiency.
One morning we visited one of local farms who were in the middle of cultivating the popular Brazilian staple, Farinha or Farofa. He should us how to transform the poisones root into an edible side-dish and I even popped my top to help out.
On another day we were invited to a house party with some of the off-duty guides and surrounding neighbors.
It was great to see what life was like on a Friday night with people my age in the Amazon.
And at night, when the sensible locals would turn in, we'd launch the boat again and head out to explore the darkness.
With 75% of the animals here being nocturnal, the noises and commotion at night were like nothing I've ever heard.
The easiest thing to spot were caimans, whose beady red eyes surfaced across the river. And apparently, if you're fast and quiet enough, you can reach down into the water and grab one.
On my final day in the Amazon, we decided to take a small crew out to get the full effect of the jungle, and go camp out.
We found a flat, dry space not far from the river and worked quickly to setup camp before dark.
We chopped trees for a tarp frame, cautiously gathered firewood and began cooking dinner over the fire.
As darkness and a little paranoia set in, we enjoyed dinner and drinks to the developing sounds around us.
We listened to music, played cards, and of course, peed close by.
We had some more drinks, made hats out of palm branch and shared stories well into the night.
After an camp-made breakfast with fresh fruit, eggs and coffee, it was time for me to pack up and head back to Manaus.
And although I spent a week engulfed in this incredible place… the people, the wildlife, the environment… everything still makes the Amazon seem like fiction...

Manaus is the capital city of the state of Amazonas in northern Brazil. It is situated at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers. With a population of two million, it is the most populous city of Amazonas.
The city was founded in 1693-94 as the Fort of São José do Rio Negro. It was elevated to a town in 1832 with the name of "Manaus", an altered spelling of the indigenous Manaós peoples, and legally transformed into a city on October 24, 1848, with the name of Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro, Portuguese for "The City of the Margins of Black River". On September 4, 1856 it returned to its original name.
Manaus is located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, and access to the city is primarily through boat or airplane. This isolation helped preserve both the nature as well as the culture of the city. The culture of Manaus, more than in any other urban area of Brazil, preserves the habits of Native Brazilian tribes. It was known at the beginning of the century, as "Heart of the Amazon" and "City of the Forest". Currently its main economic engine is the Industrial Pool of Manaus, the famous Free Economic Zone. The city has a free port and an international airport. Its manufactures include electronics, chemical products, and soap; there are distilling and ship construction industries. Manaus also exports Brazil nuts, rubber, jute and rosewood oil. It has a cathedral, opera house, zoological and botanical gardens, an ecopark and regional and native peoples museums.

Manaus is also a duty-free zone, which has encouraged development in the region.

Paricatuba Waterfall is on the right bank of the Negro River, along a small tributary, is formed by sedimentary rocks, surrounded by abundant vegetation. Access is by boat. The best time to visit is from August to February.
Love Cascade is in the Guedes bayou, with cold and crystal clear water, is accessible only by boat and, then, hiking through the Forest.

Manaus is the capital city of the state of Amazonas in northern Brazil. It is situated at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers. With a population of two million, it is the most populous city of Amazonas.
The city was founded in 1693-94 as the Fort of São José do Rio Negro. It was elevated to a town in 1832 with the name of "Manaus", an altered spelling of the indigenous Manaós peoples, and legally transformed into a city on October 24, 1848, with the name of Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro, Portuguese for "The City of the Margins of Black River". On September 4, 1856 it returned to its original name.

Tropical forests have been present in South America for millions of years and were at one point spread over most of the continent.
