A misjudged line on a super-aggressive chase run put an end to Mad Mike Whiddett’s chance of a high-ranking result at the sixth round of the Formula Drift Pro Championship in Fort Worth, Texas. Despite having not driven at the circuit in the past, Whiddett saw the all-new judged section as a playing field leveller, because established teams wouldn’t be able to draw from their previous experience. On paper, it looked fast and technical too – aspects that suit Whiddett’s high-powered yet agile RADBUL Mazda MX-5. "For us as a new team, coming into this season it was all about learning the car and gathering as much data as we can at each track, so we can run a full championship in 2016 and have the best chance at winning. But from the way RADBUL has performed and how well the team has gelled, it’s all come together so much quicker than I could ever have imagined. So I’m going into the next two events looking to stand on the box." Friday’s all-important qualifying session didn’t go so smoothly though. The Texas heat, which saw track temperatures soar to more than 50 degrees Celsius, played havoc with RADBUL. More specifically, the fluid that runs through the Mazda’s power-steering and clutch systems was boiling and causing air locks, preventing proper function. The team replaced the fluids with moments to spare before qualifying, but that issue became the least of their worries when the clutch slave cylinder failed on the first pass. With no clutch, Whiddett struggled through the qualifier and was subsequently scored low. A repair was made, but with only one shot left at making it into the main event, the pressure was really on for Whiddett. Driving at his usual 100 per cent, he didn’t waver, scoring 82 from 100 for 11th overall. Whiddett drew Mats Baribeau for his Air Force Top 32 battle on Saturday afternoon and immediately set the tone by accelerating away from the Canadian’s Toyota Mark II sedan. On the second pass, with Baribeau leading, things got a little tighter when Whiddett dropped a wheel off-course. The judges called it too close to decide a clear winner and a ‘One More Time’ re-run was scheduled. However, during the battle Baribeau’s car had developed a brake fault – something his crew wasn’t able to repair in the allotted time, so Whiddett was gifted the pass into the Top 16. The Kiwi’s next match-up was never going to be an easy one to win; Japanese driver Masashi Yokoi highly experienced behind the wheel of his Toyota 2JZ powered Nissan S15. Whiddett charged hard from the chase position, but midway through the section he faulted with a big correction and shut it down for a zero scoreline. All Yokoi had to do was run a clean chase, but when Whiddett powered away, leaving a thick cloud of white tyre smoke in RADBUL’s wake, the Japanese driver lost his on track position and put two wheels off the course – an immediate zero. It was up to the judges to decide which driver put on the best show in their respective lead passes, but the only thing they could decide on was another One More Time call. After a tyre change, the two drivers lined up to do battle again, but this time the outcome was very different. Again Whiddett had an aggressive start, but in holding a close chase proximity through the final section of the course he got lost in Yokoi’s smoke and consequently drifted wide, hitting the wall heavily with the left rear corner of the car, which spun it around for a second impact in the front. Whiddett emerged from the car uninjured, but the same couldn’t be said for RADBUL. The team called a competition time-out as the Mazda was loaded onto the back of a flat-deck tow truck and removed from the course, however, it couldn’t be repaired within the five minute limit and there was no choice left but to retire. Despite not being the outcome anyone had hoped for, plenty of positives were taken away from the round, including yet another solid qualifying performance and a 9th place finish. Mad Mike Whiddett has wrapped up his Formula Drift Pro Championship placing fifth after competing at Formula Drift’s Final Fight at Irwindale Speedway. Headed into Irwindale Speedway, the Kiwi driver was geared up for a solid end-of-year result. Having campaigned both his MADBUL Mazda RX-7 and BADBUL Mazda RX-8 at Southern California’s ‘House of Drift’ in the past, Whiddett knew what to expect from Irwindale’s unforgiving high-speed banks, but dialing in RADBUL for the revised course layout would still be a huge challenge for the team. Over the course of five select Stateside rounds this season, Whiddett and his crew have worked tirelessly to perfect the 1,200hp twin-turbo 4-rotor Mazda MX-5’s setup, and that effort has come with big rewards. No one could have predicted how competitive the brand new, untested and totally unique build would be among a field of highly-developed Pro-spec machines, but if they needed proof that it is, Whiddett’s qualifying performance on Friday said it all. Having gotten comfortable with the car, Irwindale’s judged section and the punishing daytime heat which neared 40ºC, the Red Bull driver threw down a 78.00 score line in his first qualifier to make his intentions clear. Had he only made that one pass, it would have been enough for Whiddett for qualify in the top ten of 35 drivers in the final round’s Pro division – but there was more to come. Riding the bank with RADBUL’s back bumper mere centimeters from the wall and checking off all the clipping points with precision, his next score was an 83.00. That matched the qualifying performance of championship points leader Fredric Aasbø, putting Whiddett into 4th position – his highest ever ranking in Formula Drift Pro competition – and one spot ahead of the Norwegian. Confident in RADBUL’s chassis and suspension tune and his own ability on the Irwindale track, Whiddett came out charging on Saturday morning’s practice session. Things didn’t quite go to plan though, and on his first lap of the day he hit the wall with enough impact to bend one of the Mazda’s rear wheel hubs. It needed to be replaced, but time wasn’t on the team’s side before the Air Force Top 32 commenced, which meant Whiddett would have his work cut out for him battling Sikky Racing driver James Evans. Quickly adapting to the car’s handling shortcomings, the Kiwi pushed on with clean lead and chase runs that resulted in a unanimous win decision from the judges. A gap in proceedings allowed the crew the necessary time to swap out the damaged component, and when Whiddett re-emerged after the Ford Top 16 driver introduction ceremony to face high-ranked American driver Ryan Tuerck, RADBUL was fighting fit once more. As far as Pro battle wins go, this one was as easy as they come; Tuerck faltering in his Retaks/Maxxis Scion FR-S, first by clipping Whiddett’s back bumper and then by running wide into a concrete barrier just shy of the finish line. A five-minute competition time-out was called, but the car couldn’t be repaired quickly enough and Tuerck retired. Beating Fredric Aasbø in the Nitto Great 8 was never going to be an easy task. Whiddett led first, powering through the section with plenty of speed, angle and style to set up for a close match. But in chasing Aasbø’s Rockstar/Hankook Scion tC, the Kiwi’s event came to an end; blinded by tyre smoke a missed clipping point sealing Whiddett’s fate. Like his qualifying performance, Whiddett’s fifth place overall finish at the final round of the Formula Drift Pro season is an outstanding result in an abbreviated season that was all about coming to grips with a new car and a new team. “So much happens each time we test, pit and in between event rounds; our progress this season was a collective effort and I'm stoked on our finish,” he commented after the event. The country's highest paved roadway. For a moment in time it belongs to one man, Mike Whiddett. The moment will become, the drive of a lifetime. The former state highway cuts a path between Queenstown and Wanaka. It is a short cut, which has long been a route for travellers. The first track dates back to the early gold rush days. The road now is still one of the most demanding and technical drives of the country. The drive for Mike Whiddett will be challenging and faster than most. For the first time in NZ motorsport history, the road has been closed across three sections for a unique filming opportunity. The New Zealand-based international drift driver has a chance to push his bespoke quad-rotor rotary engine car to new limits on a completely clear road. The road closure signs are rolled out; it is time for Mad Mike to Conquer the Crown. On paper, the first section of the road appears to be the trickiest. Seven consecutive hairpin turns on a near-vertical mountainside climb give the Switchbacks their name. The second section is all about speed. Whiddett pulls sixth gear along the Crown Terrace and winds the Mazda RX7's 750 horsepower engine out to its redline. He hits 232km/h before slowing, fleetingly pulling on the handbrake to lock the rear wheels before stomping back on the accelerator. The tyres erupt back into a spinning frenzy; black marks the bitumen. This is drifting nirvana in its purest form. The run up to the Crown Summit is a fusion of high, medium and low speed bends, created to attack sideways. With barriers flanking the road at one side and exposed banks at the other, it mimics the mountain touge roads that the Japanese forefathers of the sport originally, and illicitly, ran by moonlight. The margin for error is slim here, but Whiddett never backs off as the final forty-seventh corner passes by in a blur. "I think drifters have an innate ability to slip from reality when driving up a road like the Crown Range in normal circumstances. We imagine drifting through the turns, the gear changes, the footwork, the hand brake and of course stomping on the gas. So for me, having the opportunity to get behind the wheel of my machine, push it to the limit and conquer the Crown is a dream turned into a reality," says Whiddett. Mad Mike Whiddett Throws It Down In Seattle Mad Mike proves he has the skills, the team & the machine to be a threat in the Formula Drift. The ‘Throwdown’ round of the Formula Drift championship is not only an important one for drivers contesting the entire seven-round Pro series, but also one of the most exciting, with a long, high-speed banked section running into a tight and technical series of left and right-hand turns. It requires total commitment and precision, and headed into the event Whiddett was excited at the prospect of competing at Evergreen Speedway. "Seattle is one of my favourite tracks of the series, but like the other rounds, the biggest challenge will be learning the car quickly and finding a comfortable setup so we can be as competitive as possible. The other challenge, of course, is nature. If the rain sets in, we’ll have to do our best to adapt to the conditions." If the weather forecast promised anything for the event, it was to expect the unexpected. Whiddett looked strong in the dry practice, but by the time qualifying rolled around on Friday afternoon, the sky had clouded over and the rain was coming down. With 1,200 horsepower to tame, a clean pass was never going to easy, but Whiddett kept his composure and put some points on the board with only a slight wheel-off-course error to speak of. The second run, however, didn’t go to plan at all. Faced with a half-dried track, competitors struggled to maintain grip, and when Whiddett tried to hold close proximity to the wall, the bank bit back – hard. The impact tore the tyre off RADBUL’s left-rear wheel, resulting in an incomplete run and leaving Whiddett to rely on his first pass to secure him a spot in the next day’s battles. Starting from 27th put the pressure on, but the team faced an even bigger challenge on Saturday afternoon when RADBUL’s Winters Performance Quick Change differential blew. An unexpected setback, all hands on the job ensured that a replacement was fitted – if only with a few moments to spare. With no time or opportunity to test the setup, Whiddett put all his trust in the fix and lined up against Hawaiian-born Forrest Wang in the Top 32. The Nissan Silvia driver led first, but from the moment Whiddett initiated on the bank RADBUL looked unbalanced, and diving in tight resulted in a spin and a zero score. With an advantage to Wang, there was only one thing for the Kiwi driver to do on his lead lap: charge hard. And that he did, the MX-5 pulling a huge gap on the Silvia. Wang was hit with a zero for an ‘inactive chase’ and suddenly it was all tied up. The judges called a One More Time re-run, but that too ended up being too close to call, and the pair lined up for third time. Confidence restored, Whiddett was fast and focussed, pushing through to the next round after Wang succumbed to the pressure and spun. Whiddett’s Top 16 battle was one he’s been looking forward to for a long time, but taking down former Formula Drift champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. was never going to be an easy task. Again, RADBUL seemed twitchy as Gittin Jr.’s Ford Mustang RTR led on the first pass, but Whiddett appeared to overcome whatever handling issues the car had by simply piling on more speed. That was something even more obvious in his lead lap, and had Whiddett not slightly straightened up at the end of the judged section, the outcome might have been different than it was – a win to the American. When that result was announced though, it was obvious who had won the crowd’s respect. The Formula Drift Pro championship now moves to Texas for the ‘Showdown’ round on August 21-22, ahead of October’s ‘Final Fight’ at Irwindale Speedway in California.
