Bismarck The Bismark and its sister boat the Tirpitz were the largest battleships built by Germany and the largest of any European power. It was named after the Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who was responsible for unifying Germany in 1871. The Bismarck proved strong during battle as well during the Battle of the Denmark strait, where it destroyed two allied cruisers and forced another to retreat. It’s also one of the biggest boats to get destroyed during the World War II and is well-known for its downfall. While the Bismarck stationed near Brest, France; the British were seeking revenge on this behemoth.The a crew of British torpedo bombers took off from an aircraft carrier, and damaged it enough to slow down the speed. A warship came into finish the job. It wouldn’t be easy but the Bismarck was doomed and finished off on May 27th, 1941. Size doesn’t always matter in this case. It currently sits at the bottom of the ocean attracting scuba divers. 5. Yamato and Musashi These two Japanese battleships were heaviest battleships ever made and could displace 72,800 tonnes. Named after the ancient Japanese Province of Yamato, they were armed to the teeth and designed to counter the strong United States navy. They were hoping size would be more important than quantity because the US vastly outnumbered them in battleships. It had several large 46 cm cannons that could attack quite a few enemy boats at one time. It carried twenty four 25 millimeter guns that were used to take out any enemy planes. It reached a max speed of 31 miles per hour. The Yamato and its sister ship actually did not see too much action because the Japanese were hoping to keep its design a secret for a while and it was more commonly used as a transport barge. The large vessel currently lays at the bottom of the sea about 180 miles or 290 kilometers south east of Kyushu. 4. Batillus The Batillus was French Supertanker built in 1976 at St. Nazaire, located in Western France. This was the first branch of Shell Oil in France so they wanted to show the world what they could do. The deadweight capacity reached 554,000 tonnes and could reach speeds up to 16-17 knots. So you can see how improvements have been made in both speed and carrying capacity. It’s also one of the longest ships measuring at 414 meters or 1,359 feet. It was one of the four supertankers built by France in the 1970’s but like other super large vessels it was scrapped in 2003. 3. Harmony of the Sea’s While most big boats, cargo is oil, cruise boats use humans as their cargo! Although it might be a tad smaller than the others, let’s see how the world’s largest cruise boat compares with some of other large super riggers. In 2015 the largest cruise boat ever was constructed but it looks like you can’t even book a trip on it until next year! Royal Caribbean cruise company is offering cruises on their website as soon as November of 2017, visiting beautiful places all across the Caribbean and the Mediterranean seas. Harmony of the seas features its own amphitheater and is 10 stories high! Despite being a little more fun to hang out on than oil tankers, the cruise boat is still 362 meters or 1,188 feet long and can reach a maximum capacity of 5,479 passengers! Almost like a floating city. 2. Seawise Giant Previously known as the Oppama, Knock Nevis, Jahre Viking, Happy Giant and then finally the Seawise Giant, it’s safe to say it’s changed its name quite often. It became the largest ship by deadweight tonnage after lengthening. It was built in the late 1970’s in Japan. This vessel was actually attacked during the Iran-Iraq war and sank to the bottom but was resurfaced in order to be repaired. 1.Prelude FLNG The Prelude is currently the biggest ship ever built and is still in current use. The hull, or main body of the ship, stands higher than the Empire State building. It’s the first floating natural gas platform and facility ever constructed. Shell developed this ship, costing 10 billion dollars in order to liquefy natural gas at sea and it’s simply unbelievable! It’s a fantastic engineering feat and is in use by South Korea. Several countries came together to build pieces for this. The gas pipe network is nearly 450 kilometers long. Let’s just hope someone doesn’t light a match in the wrong place! At a length of 488 meters and it’s easily the largest boat ever. It’s a miracle this thing can actually float!
