James Mallahan Cain (July 1, 1892 – October 27, 1977) was an American author and journalist. Cain vehemently opposed labeling, but he is usually associated with the hardboiled school of American crime fiction and is seen as one of the creators of the roman noir. Several of his crime novels inspired highly successful movies.
Cain was born into an Irish Catholic family in Annapolis, Maryland. The son of a prominent educator and an opera singer, he inherited a love for music from his mother, but his hopes of starting a career as a singer himself were thwarted when she told him that his voice was not good enough. The family moved to Chestertown, Maryland, in 1903. In 1910, Cain graduated from Washington College, where his father, James W. Cain, served as president. By 1914 Cain had decided to become a writer. He began working as a journalist for the Baltimore American and then the Baltimore Sun.
Cain was drafted into the United States Army and spent the final year of World War I in France writing for an army magazine.

Mildred Pierce had gorgeous legs, a way with a skillet, and a bone-deep core of toughness, which she used to survive a divorce in 1940s America and claw her way out of poverty. But Mildred also had two weaknesses: a yen for shiftless men and an unreasoning devotion to her monstrous daughter. Green Hills Public Library District Reviews Dan reviews the book, "The Cocktail Waitress" by James M. Cain
The teenage me was astonished by the twisted humanity found in the work of James M. Cain. (And the Postman Always Rings Twice scene on the kitchen table with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange still blows my mind today.) And whether it was experienced in yellowed print or up on the silver screen, Cain's work was always recognizable. Well, 35 years after Cain's death, his final manuscript -- his lost novel, as it is being touted -- turned up. The Cocktail Waitress was a story Cain kicked around for several years, changing, tinkering... never quite satisfied with it. Enter Charles Ardai, editor of the Hard Case Crime publishing imprint. Ardai took Cain's multiple drafts and notes and made the best book he could of it. It's not perfect, but it's an unexpected taste of Cain that any fan of th...

"How like a serpent's tooth is a thankless child". Few of them have been more thankless than Veda (16 year old Ann Blyth), Mildred's ungrateful daughter in Michael Curtiz's classic adaptation of James M. Cain's best selling novel. Cain disliked the movie but thought Crawford was perfect in the role Bette Davis turned down. It was a huge hit and put Crawford back on top with an Oscar win for best actress. The recent mini-series cable remake with Kate Winslet was widely admired. As always, find more at http://www.trailersfromhell.com
