Afghanistan i/æfˈɡænᵻstæn/ (Pashto/Dari: افغانستان, Afġānistān), officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located within South Asia and Central Asia. It has a population of approximately 32 million, making it the 42nd most populous country in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east; Iran in the west; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the north; and China in the far northeast. Its territory covers 652,000 km2 (252,000 sq mi), making it the 41st largest country in the world.
Human habitation in Afghanistan dates back to the Middle Paleolithic Era, and the country's strategic location along the Silk Road connected it to the cultures of the Middle East and other parts of Asia. Through the ages the land has been home to various peoples and witnessed numerous military campaigns; notably by Alexander the Great, Muslim Arabs, Mongols, British, Soviet Russians, and in the modern-era by Western powers. The land also served as the source from which the Kushans, Hephthalites, Samanids, Saffarids, Ghaznavids, Ghorids, Khiljis, Mughals, Hotaks, Durranis, and others have risen to form major empires.

Taking advantage of a dwindling foreign presence as international troops continue to pull back, the Taliban has begun to ramp up their attacks in Afghanistan. A NATO convoy was travelling along Jalalabad Road, a main road in the Afghan capital of Kabul, at dawn on Monday. A Taliban suicide bomber drove an explosive-laden Toyota Corolla into the NATO motorcade, killing an Afghan civilian and injuring three foreigners. NATO’s International Security Assistance Force said it did not suffer any casualties in the attack. Hours later, a clinic in Nangarhar province was struck by another suicide attack, which led to one death and seven other injuries. An IED hidden in a busy market in Qarabagh district of Kabul detonated at around 9:30 a.m. The explosion left at least 22 injured. The Tali...

More than a thousand civilians have been killed in the war in Afghanistan this year alone, an Afghan rights group has reported. The Afghanistan Rights Monitor said recent statistics show more than 1,000 civilians were killed in the first six months of 2010, with over half of them dying in suicide attacks and roadside bombings. Among those killed and injured were children. As Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reports, the war's escalation has taken a huge toll on the Afghan people and its children in particular.

Once a vital piece of the hippy trail, well disposed, wonderful Afghanistan has unfortunately been crushed by years of war and disregard. Home to ample farmland and the rough Hindu Kush mountain range, explorers desired the acceptable mountain air and to see attractions like the monster Buddha statues of Bamiyan. Then again, the statues and numerous different landmarks were wrecked under the cataclysmic rule of the Taliban, a gathering of Islamic aggressors. - See more at: http://www.helpskhmers.com/afghanistan-travel-guide/#sthash.3QZhOt6c.dpuf Afghanistan Travel Guide, World Travel Guides, SCC Education Kampong Thom Cambodia,

Friday marks the 15th anniversary of the start of the US war in Afghanistan. When the US invaded Afghanistan shortly after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, the then President George W. Bush demanded that the Taliban hand over al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The conflict was initially backed by close allies of the US, including the UK, with NATO joining the campaign at the beginning of 2003. The Taliban were removed from power after two months, and Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan in 2011. At the end of 2014, President Barack Obama declared an end to the war, during which tens of thousands of people lost their lives. Although US officials say conditions are improving in Afghanistan, terrorist attacks remain routine in the country. Subscribe to us on Youtube: https://goo.gl/lP12gA Downlo...

August 2009 'The Sex Law' may have been watered down but forced marriage, domestic violence and rape still define life for most Afghan women. Now a fledgling women's rights movement is determined to change that legacy. It's more than 8 years since the Taliban ruled Herat but for many women here, life has barely changed. In this refuge called 'Voice of Women', Suraya tries to combat the abuse of women under President Karzai. 'Forced and child marriage has not reduced since 2001. It's still a common practice' says Suraya. For those not lucky enough to make it to her shelter, prison is the alternative. Young girls are charged with 'running away from home' and 'adultery'. 'Here rape is considered adultery' reveals Suraya. 12 year old Nadia says she 'doesn't know how to live' anymore after b...

Thirteen years after the fall of the Taliban, women in Afghanistan continue to suffer oppression and abuse. Almost nine out of 10 Afghan women face physical, sexual or psychological violence, or are forced into marriage. In the majority of cases the abuse is committed by the people they love and trust the most – their families. While shelters are trying to provide protection and legal help to some, many women return to abusive homes because there is no alternative. Unable to escape their circumstances, some are turning to drastic measures like suicide to end their suffering.
