State Government backflip, Yarloop Primary School set to be re-opened in 2017

Education Minister Peter Collier has announced the re-opening of Yarloop Primary School in 2017.

Residents were initially told in June the school would re-open, before education officials back-flipped and said the students were to remain at a temporary host school in Harvey for the beginning of the 2017 school year.

The Department of Education initially made the decision to keep the school closed due to a "lack of students", but Minister Collier said Yarloop Primary School now had enough numbers to be up and running again in 2017.

"The Liberal National Government was committed to reopening the school in Yarloop once families returned to the area.

"Those families have spoken. There are currently 29 children enrolled for next year, with further enrolments anticipated," the Minister said.

The school was largely unscathed following the devastating Yarloop bushfires earlier this year, but many families were forced to leave their homes.

"We had to relocate staff and students while safety concerns in the town were addressed," the Minister said.

Yarloop Primary School has operated as a separate school on the site of Harvey Primary School this year, and Minister Collier thanked Harvey for their ongoing support.
