Construct a milk carton pirate ship

Every pirate needs a ship! Give your kids hours of imaginative fun with this simple kids' art and craft milk carton pirate ship project. All you need to make it are things you probably have sitting around at home already.

What you need

  • Milk carton
  • Scissors
  • Coloured paper
  • 4 paper straws
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Stapler
  • Round stickers

Activity

Wash out and dry the milk carton.

Make the ship’s body
Lay the milk carton on its side and fold the opening in, so that the milk carton looks like it is unopened. This will form the bow of the pirate ship. Staple into place.

Carefully cut the side of the carton off, so that the carton has three sealed sides and one open. The open side will form the inside of the boat.

Glue coloured paper over your milk carton so that it’s all one colour (or use more than one colour if you prefer!)

Make your sails - for each straw
Tape two straws together.
Cut out two rectangles of coloured paper, one smaller than the other.
Cut two slits in the centre of your first rectangle.
Slide the straw through the slits.
Repeat with second rectangle.

Attach the sails
Bend the straw close to the bottom of your ‘sail’ and sticky tape it to the bottom of your boat (on the inside). Repeat with other sail, making it sit a little bit higher or lower, depending on the look you are going for.

Add some stickers or other decoration to finish your ship!
