Father’s day, a day set aside to honour fathers worldwide. And Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo on the occasion has admonished fathers to continue to work towards having a better society, describing them as roots of the family tree. The Vice President’s message was delivered by Speaker Yakubu Dogara at the Aso Villa Chapel, Abuja. And a sculpture formed in the image of a woman, another gift presented to the Senate President for all mothers who are recognised as holding the pillar of the family. Communication among family members is of great importance to having a united and good society, and so the gift presented to Speaker Yakubu Dogara was a carved drummer which symbolizes the promotion of healthy dialogue among family members and other members of the society. Speaker Yakubu Dogara who read one of the bible texts for the service, stressed the need to honour fathers as their role is critical in building a healthy nation. The Speaker who represented the Vice President said while the scripture admonished children to obey their parents, it specifally commanded them to honour their fathers. This was corroborated by Chaplain of the Villa Chapel, Seyi Malomo, who said of the five types of fathers stated in the bible, called on Fathers to be Abrahamic type of Father that would command children in the right way even after him. The first father’s day celebration as recorded by historians took place in the state of Washington on June 19, 1910 and was credited to Sonora Smart Dodd who saw the need to celebrate fathers, especially her father who raised six children after the death of his wife.
