Kolyma (Russian: Колыма́, IPA: [kəlɨˈma]) is a region located in the Russian Far East. It is bounded by the East Siberian Sea and the Arctic Ocean in the north and the Sea of Okhotsk to the south. The region gets its name from the Kolyma River and mountain range, parts of which were not discovered until 1926. Today the region consists roughly of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and the Magadan Oblast.
The area, part of which is within the Arctic Circle, has a subarctic climate with very cold winters lasting up to six months of the year. Permafrost and tundra cover a large part of the region. Average winter temperatures range from -19 °C to -38 °C (even lower in the interior), and average summer temperatures, from +3 °C to +16 °C. There are rich reserves of gold, silver, tin, tungsten, mercury, copper, antimony, coal, oil, and peat. Twenty-nine zones of possible oil and gas accumulation have been identified in the Sea of Okhotsk shelf. Total reserves are estimated at 3.5 billion tons of equivalent fuel, including 1.2 billion tons of oil and 1.5 billion m3 of gas.

Kolyma - at life's rock bottom. Siberian Impressions, Part IV. Documentary Stanislaw Kalisz, Marek Antonowicz, Dariusz Jakubiak, Adam Draber.
The Kolyma region (pronounced kah-ly-MAH) is located in the far north-eastern area of Siberia. The people of the Soviet Union feared Kolyma more than any other region of the Gulag Empire. "Kolyma znaczit smert" was the common phrase whispered at the time, and translates, without loss, to "Kolyma means death." This is about the worst forced labor/extermination camp of all time - Kolyma - which claimed the lives of at least 3 million people (twice the amount of Auschwitz). Temperatures in the winter averaged at around -50F but could reach -90F. This is in honor of all the poor souls who suffered in died in the most ineffable anguish and misery.

The most hardcore highway, you have ever seen, M56 Kolyma Highway, located in far east part of Russia. It connects Magadan and Yakutsk. The length of the original road via Tomtor is about 1,900 kilometers (1,200 mi). The road was in a state of disrepair and is not traversable by standard road vehicles because of washed-out bridges and sections of road reclaimed by streams. During winter, frozen water actually helps river crossings. The name "Road of bones" comes from thousands of people, who died during the creation of the route. The area is extremely cold during the winter. Two towns by the highway, Tomtor and Oymyakon, both claim the coldest inhabited place on earth (often referred to as -71.2°C, but might be -67.7°C) outside Antarctica. The average temperature in Oymyakon in January is...
I rode from Ulaanbaatar Mongolia to Magadan Russia, via Yakutsk on the Road of Bones. This was a typical Road of Bones section that made up a15 hour day of riding. Riding the Kolyma "highway" is a ride of day after day tough, long hours and tough, always changing conditions. If it's not rain, lots of mud and slippery surfaces, it's choking dust. Stopping means thousands of flies and mosquitoes. I did this trip entirely on my own. A rider should be prepared for anything and everything and be able to withstand any conditions and be able to problem solve any situation.
This road was built by the inmates of Gulag camps, most of them were buried along the way. That's why it's named the Road of Bones. http://bit.ly/roadofbonesinwinter It was short on Jan. 21, 2010. The way back from Tomtor to Yakutsk by the Road of Bones took 17 hrs. The part between Kyubyume to Khandyga can be done for 4-5 hrs. This is my first edited video. Compiled from a few vids shot by my old mobile. The end was added with Bjorn Steinz's piece. Pictures are mine. OYMYAKON TOURISM. http://visityakutia.com/?p=259 ... This winter travel was arranged for friends of mine and my blog readers http://AskYakutia.com in Jan 2010. Slideshow with photographs of cold winter weather in Oymyakon, Siberia / Russia. The lowest temperature we registered during the journey was -57.1C in the early morning. We were said there were -60 degrees Celcius at night, but we, frankly, overslept it. In the video you'll see the following settlements: Cherkekh (outdoor museum), Khandyga (w/ guesthouse and church), Teplyj Klyuch (right before mountains), Kyubyume (gas station in the night), Tomtor (horse breeding farm, store, sports house, Chyskhaan Ice Tunnel, etc) and Oymyakon (you'll identify it quickly). Unfortunately, the soundtrack is 6 min only, and the text says about g...

They pass me when I close my eyes
Ragged lines of ragged grey
Grey their faces, grey their hands
Grey the ghosts that haunt this land
Their pain, it echoes through the hills
Through no one living ever left
This is Kolyma - a graveyard for the lost
The muffled sounds of cries and moans
Od swearing, shooting and commands
They all disappeared in this big land
Where summer's harsh and winter kills
Where gold is hidden, death's for free
And freedom came from weapon steel
This is Kolyma - a graveyard for the lost
The forest conquered all the camps
Broke walls, cut fences down to earth
The forest conquered all the camps
Broke walls, cut fences down to earth
Land of gold and land of death, a graveyard for the lost
You gave the treasures, you tool the men, you'll keep them forever
(This is) Kolyma - a graveyard for the lost
(This is) Kolyma - a graveyard for the lost
The cold wind's crying for the lost
He knows the sites where they all lie
The wolves are howling in the woods
Howls like calling up the dead
I'd rather trust in ther fangs
Than mercy by man's hand
This is Kolyma - a graveyard for the lost
The cold wind's crying for the lost
