The Early Oil: Herald Sun racing writer Michael Manley gives his extended preview of Saturday’s Sandown Spring Carnival Race Day

GODOLPHIN import Qewy enters the Sandown Cup in red hot form, with the Herald Sun’s Michael Manley having no hesitation in making him his best bet for the day.

Manley says the Geelong Cup winner appears a level above his rivals and the 3200m trip suits, as he showed in last Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup where he finished solidly for fourth place.

Manley believes the addition of jockey Kerrin McEvoy, who rode him well from the front at Geelong, makes him a great hope in the Group 3 Sandown Cup.

Race 1: Thoroughbred Club Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m) 12.25pm

Of the raced horses ARCTIC ANGEL (10) has the best form credentials with a sound fourth at Flemington behind Invincible Star. Lots of first starters have shown promise in jump-outs and trials including MALZOOM (8) from the Lindsay Park barn. HEATHERTON (13) and KEDLESTON (7) quinealled a recent jump-out at Caulfield. HERRERA (12) ran on well to win Cranbourne trial. Tony McEvoy is having a great run with his two-year-olds and he has MIKUNI (1) who showed talent at his debut in Adelaide and the well bred VINLAND (4) who was successful in a trial at Morphettville. MY MOTHER SAYS (3) won a strong trial at Cranbourne.

SUGGESTED BET: WATCH FOR ANY BETTING MOVES.

Race 2: Yarramalong Racing Club Stakes (1500m) 1pm

Former top English and Hong Kong galloper REDKIRK WARRIOR (4) made an outstanding Australian debut when he ran home strongly for second behind Sir Bacchus over 1200m at Moonee Valley. He finished second in a Group 1 race at Hong Kong and also started favourite in last year’s Hong Kong Derby. Looks well in on the weights. Stablemate SOVEREIGN NATION (5) is racing consistently and is building to a win. Likely to settle handier. ROYAL RAPTURE (2) ran a rare poor race at Moonee Valley last start. He’s been in work for ages but should get a great on speed run. Stablemate STRATUM STAR (1) worked forward and tired in the Cantala Stakes. He’s better from off the speed and he should be ready to peak.

SUGGESTED BET: REDKIRK WARRIOR THE WIN.

Race 3: Ladbrokes Sandown Cup (3200m) 1.35pm

The Godolphin domination of the staying races should continue in this with QEWY (1) whose two Australian runs for a Geelong Cup win and fourth in the Melbourne Cup have been outstanding. Looks a level above his opposition. DE LITTLE ENGINE (3) battled on well when close to second placing but almost 12 lengths behind Francis Of Assisi in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. SWACDELIC (4) was a little unlucky when close up fourth behind Kinema in the 2800m race on Melbourne Cup Day. FOUR CARAT (8) finished close third in that race.

SUGGESTED BET: QEWY THE WIN.

Race 4: OTI Racing Doverton Stakes (1000m) 2.10pm

O’MALLEY (6) is racing in great fashion. He was suited by the run on swoopers pattern at Moonee Valley last start. Great effort when close up at Group 2 level at same track before that and with 54 kilos looks well placed. VEZALAY (5) was in the wrong position near the inside rail when she failed at Group 3 level at Flemington last start. Good effort at her previous start when she finished close third at Caulfield. MISS PROMISCUITY (2) was also in the wrong part of the track at Flemington last start after good run at Caulfield. Prolific winning SA sprinter SWINGING ARMS (4) can boast form around the likes of Flamberge and he has a great first-up record. HUSSON EAGLE (3) is a smart sprinter resuming and races well at this track.

SUGGESTED BET: O’MALLEY EACH-WAY.

Race 5: City Of Greater Dandenong Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) 2.45pm

PROMPT RESPONSE (5) has just been beaten at her last two starts where she’s had a tough run and fought on strongly each time only to go down in a photo. She’s drawn well this time and with Damien Oliver on board should get a great run in transit. HEAR THE CHANT (2) was in slower part of the track at Flemington last start so run should be forgiven. Go on strong finishing effort to win at Caulfield before that. FLYING JESS (3) hasn’t had much luck in recent starts and has the talent to be in the finish. MOONLITES CHOICE (7) is three wins from three starts and she overcame difficulties to win at Kyneton last start against older horses. PETITION (14) hasn’t started since she finished second to the smart Jennifer Lynn at Caulfield last start.

SUGGESTED BET: PROMPT RESPONSE THE WIN.

Race 6: Ladbrokes Sandown Guineas (1600m) 3.25pm

MORTON’S FORK (1) split two potential top liners when just beaten by Comin’ Through with stablemate Bezel third in the Carbine Club Stakes. The Carbine Club Stakes is usually a great form reference for this race. Hardest to beat should be Darren Weir’s three-year-old filly JENNIFER LYNN (8) is a horse going places. She’s won four out of five starts and finished strongly to win over 1400m at Flemington last start. Step up to 1600m will suit. RUTHVEN (3) fought on strongly to win at Geelong last start after being trapped wide throughout. SOVIET SECRET (9) was a Group 3 placegetter as a three-year-old filly and sat wide when successful at Pakenham last start.

SUGGESTED BET: MORTON’S FORK THE WIN.

media_cameraHistory does repeat: Who Shot Thebarman (nearest) won the Zipping Classic by seven lengths last year after a strong Melbourne Cup performance. Picture: Colleen Petch

Race 7: Quayclean Zipping Classic (2400m) 4pm

Grand stayer WHO SHOT THEBARMAN (1) won this race last year by seven lengths and heads into this ready to make it two wins in a row after running on strongly to finish fifth in the Melbourne Cup. He should be suited by likely fast speed which could be set by SECRET NUMBER (4). SO SI BON (8) is a smart three-year-old colt who suffered interference in the Victoria Derby mid-race. With light-weight he’s going to go close. ALMOONQITH (3) looked a strong place chance half way up the straight in the Melbourne Cup but died on his run. He won the Sandown Cup last year. BEAUTIFUL ROMANCE (7) finished on strongly to run seventh in the Melbourne Cup. BIG ORANGE (2) will be better suited over 2400m.

SUGGESTED BET: WHO SHOT THEBARMAN THE WIN.

Race 8: Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) 4.40pm

LUCKY HUSSLER (1) was a little disappointing in his two starts this campaign in Group 1 sprints at Moonee Valley but he wasn’t disgraced. He’ll be better suited over 1300m at Hillside and earlier this year he finished an unlucky second in the Group One Orr Stakes at Caulfield. SUPER CASH (11) is an above average mare who fought on well at Flemington last start when on the slower inside section of the straight. ILLUSTRIOUS LAD (4) is racing in superb fashion. Followed unlucky Caulfield second two starts ago with strong win at Group 2 level at Flemington in fast time last start. FAATINAH (7) is racing well. He’s led and been run down at his past two starts but has fought on well each time. UNDER THE LOUVRE (2) never runs a bad race and should be in the finish.

SUGGESTED BET: LUCKY HUSSLER THE WIN.

Race 9: Mypunter.com Eclipse Stakes (1800m) 5.20pm

ALASKAN ROSE (11) is racing consistently and hasn’t had much luck in her two recent starts. She should have finished closer in Group 2 Matriarch Stakes as she was held up for a run in the straight and was also checked in the early part of the race. She will carry the minimum weight of 54 kilos as will two other great chances in COOL CHAP (13), who was run down in the closing stages by The Chairman at Flemington and PLOT THE COURSE (14) who will find this easier than last start at Flemington behind Fabrizio. LIDARI (1) was wide throughout in the same race. Wildcard could be PUCCINI (4) who ran second in this race last year. He should have won the Horsham Cup at his last start.

SUGGESTED BET: ALASKAN ROSE EACH-WAY.

Race 10: Le Pine Funerals Summoned Stakes (1500m)

SHILLELAGH (12) looked home at Flemington last start but was run down by Artistry in the closing stages. She was also closer to the fence which was the slower ground. SILENT SEDITION (2) finished third in that race at Flemington and she’s also drawn out but has the class to overcome that barrier. Sydney mare EXTENSIBLE (9) has been freshened since finishing fourth at Group 3 level over 1600m at Randwick in strong form race. METAPHORICAL (6) tried hard when second to Sort After at Flemington over 1700m and drops back to 1500m. Another Sydney mare SWEET REDEMPTION (10) led throughout to win over 1600m at her last start at Randwick. DULVERTON (11) has claims.

SUGGESTED BET: SHILLELAGH THE WIN.
