PORT ADELAIDE has opened five spots on its AFL senior list for next season after making seven changes to the Power squad ahead of Monday’s deadline on delistings.

These five vacancies will be filled at next month’s AFL national draft in Sydney where the Power will call at No.14, 17, 30 and 31. Pick No.85 will be assigned to upgrading rookie-listed defender Nathan Krakouer.

This list-management strategy follows defender Cam O’Shea joining veteran forward Jay Schulz, fellow forward John Butcher, 21-year-old defender Sam Colquhoun and utility Paul Stewart being cut at Alberton and experienced defender Alipate Carlile being forced into retirement by repeat injuries, despite being on contract for next season.

Port Adelaide confirmed the delistings and its decisions to:

Promote Krakouer, who gets his third season in his second AFL stint at Alberton.

Recontract experienced forward Angus Monfries. He has signed a one-year extension after being forced out of football this year by the season-long ban imposed by WADA in response to the 2012 supplements program at Essendon, Monfries’ former AFL club.

Extend defender Tom Jonas’ contract by three years, as previously reported in The Advertiser.

Cut Sandover Medallist Kane Mitchell from the rookie list.

“We have now finalised our de-listings,” Port Adelaide football chief Chris Davies said.

“With seven changes to our list ahead of the draft, and with four picks inside the first 31, we’re happy with our position heading into pre-season.”

All 18 AFL clubs must delist at least three players by the end of the contract cycle of October 31 to enter the national draft.

O’Shea, 24, pre-empted the October 31 deadline for AFL delistings by announcing his own axing on Sunday morning.

“Thanks for the good times (Port Adelaide Football Club) loved the highs and lows of the past six years. Looking forward to what’s next,” O’Shea wrote on social media as his career at the Power ended at 35 AFL games. His next chapter could unfold at St Kilda.

O’Shea, who played 13 matches this year, spent six seasons at Port Adelaide after being a third-round draft pick (No. 52) in the 2010 national draft.

Of O’Shea, who is expected to move to St Kilda, Davies said: “We thank Cam for his service over the past six seasons and wish him the very best with his future in footy. These decisions are always very difficult but we make them with a long-term view to our list management.”

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley yesterday spoke glowingly of Jonas, who had his season wrecked this year by a six-game ban for striking West Coast midfielder Andrew Gaff.

“Tom is a valued member of our leadership group and is one of our most influential leaders on and off the field,” Hinkley said.

“We missed Tom’s physical and aggressive approach to the game and he is an important part of our backline group with his ability to play against opponents of any size like Eddie Betts or Jeremy Cameron.”

“He’ll keep working with (defence coach Nathan Bassett) to fast track the development of our younger defenders like Darcy Byrne-Jones, Logan Austin and Tom Clurey.”

The Power has ranked ninth and 10th in the past two seasons with club chief executive Keith Thomas noting there is an “under-performing” list at Alberton that must live up to expectations.

This under-performing label was delivered in end-of-season reviews that Thomas says were designed to be “uncomfortable”.

“There is significant upside in our group … we can get a lot more out of our established stars,” Thomas said. “We believe we are a under-performing list that’s going to absolutely respond in 2017.”
