Draft prospect’s season over after domestic violence injuries

A prospect in next year’s NFL draft has seen his college career come to an end after he suffered injuries when he was attacked by his girlfriend.

According to the Miami Herald, Florida International senior tight end Jonnu Smith suffered season-ending injuries when he was struck and had boiling water poured on him in a domestic violence incident.

An arrest affidavit says Smith suffered severe burns on his head, neck, back, shoulder and arm when his girlfriend, Mary Gaspar, boiled water in his dorm room and dumped it on him, then struck him with her open hands. The affidavit says Gaspar admitted to police that she did it, stating it was because she was upset that he wasn’t paying enough attention to her.

Gaspar, who is five months pregnant with Smith’s child, was charged with aggravated battery.

Smith is back on campus but his burns will not heal in time for him to play this season. He is viewed as a potential NFL pick after a very productive career as a four-year starter playing for coach Ron Turner, a former Bears offensive coordinator who runs a pro-style offense.

Guessing his wonderlic score won’t be all that high. It’s one thing to date the crazy hot chick, it’s another to impregnate her.

Classy woman there! haha The Bills’ kicker’s wife should have used that analogy of inflicting pain on Dread Sherman instead of the one she used.

  21. imnotsorryisaidthat says: Nov 10, 2016 1:28 PM

this female on male violence happens way more often than you would think and I’m sure is the spark for many men being charged after the fact with the allegation

  22. guyljr says: Nov 10, 2016 1:30 PM

So you have two choices, subdue your crazy girlfriend and have your career ended… OR… Keep your hands off of her and have your career ended. Seems legit.

  23. maestro1899 says: Nov 10, 2016 1:30 PM

I wonder if she was suspended from her job for 6 weeks without due process?

What are the chances goodell suspends him when he makes it the NFL next year, “just in case”.

  24. dreadnok89 says: Nov 10, 2016 1:32 PM

    She better be in jail

  25. charger383 says: Nov 10, 2016 1:38 PM

This all happened during a commercial break on Maury!

    Dumb TPT

  28. abninf says: Nov 10, 2016 1:49 PM

Holy cow. I would make sure she went to prison, I would take full custody of the child and make her pay support for 18 years.

  29. chicagosportsfan11 says: Nov 10, 2016 1:49 PM

I feel very bad for him but something tells me he’s going to stay with her. She doesn’t go from 0 to boiling water overnight. For his sake and the sake of his unborn child I hope he does the sane thing and stay away from her then file for sole custody of that child. You can’t cure that kind of crazy.

  30. juice08 says: Nov 10, 2016 1:54 PM

that’s one slow burn of an attack waiting for water to boil

  31. genericcommenter says: Nov 10, 2016 1:55 PM

Need to make sure to suspend him since he’s a man and obviously guilty, since violence is perpetrated by men against women, women can’t control their emotions, and obviously he triggered her.

  32. whyuknowdat says: Nov 10, 2016 2:06 PM

I like the way you work it, No diggity, I got to bag it up, bag it up

  33. eetadick says: Nov 10, 2016 2:06 PM

  34. harrisonhits2 says: Nov 10, 2016 2:13 PM

Yeah because burning the hell out of someone is gong to get them to love you more and give you more attention.

    SMH

This should result in jail time no question about it.

  35. 1phillyphan says: Nov 10, 2016 2:29 PM

I hope some NFL teams give him a shot or at least some tryouts…As for her. They should get her for Attempted murder and take her kid from her for him to raise. The comments above are legit. If he defended himself, they would have charged him and he would have never had a shot at a NFL Career

  36. rcali says: Nov 10, 2016 3:05 PM

Nice of her to take time out of her post-election protesting.

  37. 52crabcakes says: Nov 10, 2016 3:19 PM

She deserves jail, nothing short. I don’t care if you are a female/male.

  40. jaymeister says: Nov 10, 2016 4:39 PM

Going out on a limb here. But girl, being 5 months pregnant, you probably got all the attention your were going to get from this guy. Ask Adrian Peterson’s or Antonio Cromartie’s baby mommas how THAT works.

  41. Ben Greenwood says: Nov 11, 2016 10:11 AM

Wait until the postpartum kicks in! Man better start listening to the people who have common sense and care about him.
