AFL Women’s guernseys revealed as new competition launches new designs

THE inaugural season of the AFLW competition will look different to the footy we’re used to in more ways than one.

The league launched its new guernseys on Tuesday, revealing just what the elite women will wear when the season launches next February.

The reveal comes after the AFL and AFL Players Association brokered a landmark pay deal to increase the base wages of female footballers.

Each of the eight designs looks similar to that of the men’s team at the respective clubs with some making more drastic changes than others.

Some of the league’s new stars, including Melbourne’s Daisy Pearce, Carlton’s Lauren Arnell and Western Bulldog Aasta O’Connor helped design the guernseys, which are expected to be available for purchase in 2017.

“I think it’s really important when we step on the field we feel ready and I think the uniform provides that,” O’Connor said.

“The way it feels is like nothing we’ve worn before. I remember when we started playing in the under 10s my shorts had a zip with a button across, the traditional male footy short. So we’ve come a long way.”

The kits are lighter with shorter socks to suit the league which will be played during summer, while the designs have been altered around the shoulders to fit the female form.

“I really like that the shoulders are brought in a bit,” Arnell said.

“Men are built differently to us so to have that (is great). Around the hips is important too because female bodies are very different to male bodies.”

Pearce agreed, explaining that she was a fan of the shorter socks in particular.

“I’ve secretly been chopping mine for a year or two now so it’s nice I won’t need to do that and do it on the sly either,” she said.
