Vintage Wedding Photos of Marilyn Monroe's First Marriage With James Dougherty in 1942, When She Was 16

Hollywood beauty Marilyn Monroe had countless lovers — but none of them stuck around long. She was divorced three times before dying of an overdose at age 36 in 1962. Shortly after the moniker became her real name, a young Norma Jean Baker married her neighbor James Dougherty at the tender age of 16.

Dougherty was sent on an overseas assignment in 1944 and returned to Los Angeles two years later to find a bright-eyed Monroe embarking on a modeling career with hopes of becoming an actress. Monroe decided to follow her dreams and Dougherty wasn't part of them.

"My marriage didn't make me sad, but it didn't make me happy either," Monroe said. "My husband and I hardly spoke to each other. This wasn't because we were angry. We had nothing to say. I was dying of boredom."

Dougherty eventually became a Los Angeles police detective.

In later life, it was reported that Dougherty's second wife refused to let him see films in which Marilyn Monroe was a star.

27 Rare and Fascinating Color Photographs of Romania in the 1930s

The 1930s was the decade of crisis for Romanian democracy. The world depression exacerbated existing economic problems and sharpened social tensions and thus gave impetus to those forces hostile to the prevailing parliamentary system.

The crisis enhanced the appeal of anti-Semitism among certain elements of society, who used it to rally support for their particular brand of nationalism. Foremost among organizations that made anti-Semitism the ideological core of their new Romania was the Iron Guard, which reached the height of its popularity in the mid 1930s.
