What types of toilet are there?

Close-coupled toilets are made up of two separate ceramic pieces, where the cistern is mounted directly onto the pan. Available in a wide range of shapes and styles, they are a great choice for affordability and ease of installation.

Back to wall toilets are a tidy and minimalist option with a concealed cistern. Either a wall, built in box or furniture featuring hidden access can be used to store the cistern, and the finish is neat and subtle.

Wall-hung toilets offer a similar solution to back to wall toilets, minus the base. These toilets are mounted to the wall and have an appealing “floating” design that can look stylish and add a sense of space to bathrooms.

Corner toilets are an ergonomic solution for smaller bathrooms. With a compact cistern designed to fit into corners, these can be tucked snugly out of the way and make ideal cloakroom toilets.

Traditional high level cistern toilets, or Victorian style toilets, are an elegant style option where the cistern is separated from the pan and mounted high above with a pull chain to flush.

What size toilet works for my bathroom?

Choosing the right toilet isn’t just a matter of style - it can be a very technical business, so here are the various measurements to tick off your loo list:

Height Whether you opt for a wall hung toilet or a close coupled toilet, its height will affect its comfort. Toilets lower to the ground can be uncomfortable, particularly for taller or elderly users, who may prefer a comfort height toilet.

Width It’s important to be able to move around the toilet and access other fixtures, so if space is limited, a narrow design might be necessary. Back to wall toilets with slim bases and corner toilets could save you some floor space in a small bathroom or cloakroom.

Projection How far a toilet projects out from the wall obviously impacts space. The round or square bowl of modern toilets are designed to have a shorter projection to suit smaller bathrooms, whereas traditional toilets are typically more slimline and elongated and may integrate well into the classic decor of period bathrooms.

’Rough in’ This relates to the plumbing, and it’s particularly important when replacing an old toilet to make sure the new rough in matches the old.
