Introducing Engadget’s 2016 holiday gift guide!

Here in the US, holiday shopping season officially kicks off on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, but at Engadget we’re getting started early. Three weeks early, to be precise. Today we’re launching our 2016 holiday gift guide – our biggest and most ambitious yet. This year you’ll find 120 picks across 10 categories, up from 84 last year. You’ll also find 100 percent more video, with a quick few-minute stop-motion vid and highlight reel accompanying all of our recommendations.

As ever, we built our guide around shopping for specific people. You won’t find a “media streamer” section here, for instance, but rather, carefully selected sets of presents for the various types in your life – everyone from gamers to workaholics to wanna-be Martha Stewarts. (Lots of cooking gadgets for them.) And, with many of our picks coming in under $50, you won’t have to break your gift budget either.

Have a look at our full guide here, and stay tuned over the coming weeks as we put the spotlight on our favorite picks in each category.

Xiaomi’s Mi MIX is all about its gorgeous edge-to-edge display

We’re used to surprise announcements at Xiaomi events, but this time, it’s a rather special one. After showing off the Mi Note 2, the company unveiled the Mi MIX “concept phone” – one that’s headlining with a cool 6.4-inch, edge-to-edge 1080p LCD (even at the top two round corners, and without using the old optical illusion trick). The high-end device also features glossy, full ceramic body and buttons, with no earpiece or proximity sensor, allowing for a cleaner look on the device’s top edge. And, naturally, as the flagship phone it has flagship specs. For a moment there, we were wondering why Xiaomi would spend so much time talking about a concept phone, but then, as a final surprise, we learned it’s something people will actually be able to buy.

Puma’s self-lacing shoes were made for track athletes

Nike has some competition. Though the company has gotten a lot of attention for its Back to the Future-inspired HyperAdapt sneakers, it’s not the only brand working on self-lacing shoes. Almost a year ago, Puma showed off its own self-lacing sneakers, called the Autodiscs, and seeded them to the likes of Usain Bolt and Rickie Fowler. Since then the company has had little to say about these rare shoes, but we recently had the chance to get an exclusive look at them and even try them on.

In contrast to Microsoft’s everything-and-the-kitchen-sink-approach to announcements just a day earlier, Apple’s “Hello Again” event was a more focused affair. However, there was still a lot to take in. How does the new MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar work, exactly? And what’s this TV app that Apple introduced?

Microsoft Research helped ‘Gears of War 4’ sound so good

Popping in and out of cover has been a hallmark of the Gears of War franchise since the first game came out in 2006. It hasn’t changed much because it didn’t need to. What’s always been an issue though is how thin the game sounds – a shortcoming of the underlying tech, Unreal Engine, powering it. But Microsoft owns the series now and has far more money to throw at it than former owners/Unreal Engine creators Epic Games did. With help from Microsoft Research, Redmond’s Gears of Warfactory The Coalition found a high tech way to fix that problem. It’s called Triton.

Plum is a smart but expensive gadget for the wine-obsessed

Wine has a culture all of its own, steeped in tradition and practices passed down over the years. But wine experts will tell you it’s also a science, with precise measurements and conditions required to make that perfect bottle. The new Plum wine fridge stands firmly on the side of science. The $1,499 device can hold only two bottles at once, but Plum’s creators say it can make just about every aspect of serving wine better.

A wine fridge that knows the exact temperature for every bottle you put in it and can keep it fresh for up to 90 days. What’s not to like?

If you’re in Colorado and grab a can of Budweiser, it’s possible that you might be sipping beer delivered by Uber’s autonomous truck company. The Navdy is an $800 accessory that makes almost any car smart

Not everyone can afford to replace their current whip just to get the latest automotive smart features. The aftermarket world has your back if you want to upgrade your stereo, but if you’re looking for an HUD (heads up display) there aren’t a lot of great options. Enter Navdy, a third-party way to make your car smarter with the power of projection. Two years after dropping a slick commercial and Kickstarter campaign, it’s finally shipping.

As a refresher, the portable $800 device does more than display your current speed. Via a companion app for iOS and Android, it also has turn-by-turn navigation, music controls and notifications for messages and calls. Basically, it’s a see-through version of your smartphone on top of your dash, and most of the time that’s great – though, as we discovered, there are times when it becomes painfully obvious that it’s not a factory-fitted item.

Yes, you can still buy Samsung’s Note 7 in Hong Kong (though you probably shouldn’t)

Hong Kong’s Sincere Podium is home to all manner of mobile devices, and the mall appears to be the last place in the city – if not the world – to still be openly selling it, despite the worldwide recall. Over the weekend, we came across a shop with a glass cabinet full of boxes for the 64GB Note 7, with a bright sticker on one of them saying “Samsung Note 7 dealer goods: Special offer” in Chinese. Today, he went back to said shop and asked how much the abruptly discontinued phones were going for. The answer? A whopping HK$5,980 or about $770 a piece, which isn’t that much of a “special offer” considering that the original off-contract price was HK$6,198 or about $799.
