Richard Preston "Rick" Carlisle (/ˈkɑːrlaɪl/ KAR-lyl; born October 27, 1959) is the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He has also served as head coach of the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons and was previously a player in the NBA. He is also one of only 11 people to win an NBA championship both as a player and as a coach.
Carlisle was raised in Lisbon, New York. He attended Lisbon Central High School, then spent a year at Worcester Academy. He played two years of college basketball at the University of Maine from 1979 to 1981, before transferring to the University of Virginia. He co-captained the Cavaliers to the Final Four in 1984 and averaged 12.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per game during his college career.
After graduating in 1984 Carlisle was selected by the Boston Celtics in that spring's draft (23rd pick in the third round), where he played alongside Larry Bird. Teams he played for under Celtics coach K.C. Jones won the NBA championship in 1986 against the Houston Rockets and lost in the finals in 1985 and 1987 to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Rajon Pierre Rondo (born February 22, 1986) is an American professional basketball player for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is a four-time All-Star, one-time All-NBA team selection, and a four-time All-Defensive member. He also led the NBA in steals during the 2009–10 season, and assists during the 2011–12 and 2012–13 seasons. He began his professional career with the Boston Celtics, winning an NBA championship in 2008. He ranks fourth in Celtic history in assists and third in steals. He also briefly played for the Dallas Mavericks.
Rondo played two years of college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats before he was drafted 21st overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 2006 NBA draft. He was subsequently traded to the Celtics. He played a supporting role before he established himself as the starting point guard for the Celtics during the 2007–08 season. That season, Rondo earned his first league championship, playing alongside All-Stars Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. His breakout performance came during the 2009 NBA Playoffs, where he nearly averaged a triple-double, and helped his team take the eventual Eastern Conference champion Orlando Magic to seven games in the semi-finals. Rondo is considered to be one of the premier triple-double threats in the NBA. He ranks 12th in NBA history in career regular season triple-doubles (27) and 4th in career playoff triple-doubles (10).<ref name=NBA">Getz, Vin (April 21, 2013).
