Queensland win dramatic rain-affected one-dayer over Tasmania

PROMISING Queensland batsman Matt Renshaw will have his short term future decided on Tuesday after a freak accident at Allan Border Field.

Renshaw, likened to a young Matthew Hayden, damaged his left knee in a collision with Tasmanian fast bowler Jackson Bird during the scramble for a quick single.

The injury soured a profitable day for the Bulls who had a one-run victory over Tasmania in a rain shortened Matador Cup match, their second win from as many matches.

Under the Duckworth-Lewis system the Tigers needed a boundary off the last ball of the match bowled by Luke Feldman to win but managed just two.

The run target jumped by two in one ball.

“It was just one of those heartbreaking losses,’’ said Tasmanian coach Dan Marsh.

“We knew we needed eight of the last over to be in front.’’

Renshaw retired hurt on 39 and will have the knee scanned on Tuesday. He will not travel to Perth for the Bulls next match against Western Australia, ruining his early season momentum which included 88 against the Cricket Australian XI on Saturday.

Tasmania were 3-114 when afternoon showers swept the ground and ended play.

Under the Duckworth-Lewis system, Tasmania would have had to score 65 off the last 45 balls to win had the rain not intervened.

Queensland had made 5-158 off 35.5 overs including Marnus Labuchagne’s 51.

Leg-spinner Cameron Boyce, who left Queensland this year to try his luck with Tasmania, bowled steadily for his new state to take 2-22 off 5.5 overs before Test selector Mark Waugh.
