Zeke Douglas dies in hospital after being struck with a golf club while hunting cane toads at Maroochydore on Saturday night. 7 News Queensland
The teenager had been hunting cane toads with friends near a golf course at Maroochydore about 7.30pm on Saturday when he was accidentally struck in the head with a golf club.
He immediately collapsed and his friends called an ambulance, which rushed the boy to Nambour hospital.
He was then flown to Brisbane's Lady Cilento Children's Hospital, where he was put on life support.
Initial police investigations indicate the incident was a tragic accident and there are no suspicious circumstances.
The RSPCA has repeatedly appealed to Queenslanders intent on killing cane toads not to hit them with golf clubs or cricket bats, saying such methods rarely kill the pests.
It says cane toads should be killed humanely by putting them to sleep in the fridge, before freezing them.
Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson offered deepest condolences to Zeke's family, his friends and loved ones on behalf of councillors and council staff.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with them all at this very difficult time," he said in a statement.
"I am sure the entire Sunshine Coast community joins with us in expressing their support for Zeke's family and friends now and into the future."
