Index of The Originals
This is the alphabetical index of the songs that have been covered in the series of lesser-known originals. In brackets follows first the artist whose version is probably the best know, followed by the performer of the original (or the oldest version I could locate for purposes of posting it). That is followed by the link that leads to the post in which the history of the song is covered.

Oh, good spot. Could use that for the Copy Borrow Steal series.
hi, amd:
a great song from the early 1960s – Walk right In – i just found out was based on a much earlier song of 1924. don’t know any of the details but you might consider doing “an original” on it.
steve heeren
The earliest version I know (and have) is that by Cannon’s Jug Stompers from 1929, which was written by the eponymous Gus Cannon. Which, of course, qualifies it as an Original. But given that I have something like 250 other songs waiting to be covered (as it were), I can’t make any promises.
@halfhearteddude
i was wrong about the 1924 date but “Jug Stompers” (what does this refer to?) sure rings a bell.
Nice site,
Here is one more. It has a funny history, eventually leading to US No 1
