The Danube Delta (Romanian: Delta Dunării pronounced [ˈdelta ˈdunərij]; Ukrainian: Дельта Дунаю, Del'ta Dunaju) is the second largest river delta in Europe, after the Volga Delta, and is the best preserved on the continent. The greater part of the Danube Delta lies in Romania (Tulcea County), while its northern part, on the left bank of the Chilia arm, is situated in Ukraine (Odessa Oblast). Its approximate surface area is 4,152 km2 (1,603 sq mi), of which 3,446 km2 (1,331 sq mi) is in Romania. With the lagoons of Razim–Sinoe (1,015 km2 (392 sq mi) with 865 km2 (334 sq mi) water surface), located south of the main delta, the total area of the Danube Delta is 5,165 km2 (1,994 sq mi). The Razim–Sinoe lagoon complex is geologically and ecologically related to the delta proper and the combined territory is listed as a World Heritage Site.
The modern Danube Delta began to form after 4000 BCE in a bay of the Black Sea, when the sea rose to its present level. A sandy barrier blocked the Danube bay where the river initially built its delta. Upon filling the bay with sediment, the delta advanced outside this barrier-blocked estuary after 3500 BCE, building several successive lobes: the St. George I (3500–1600 BCE), the Sulina (1600–0 BCE), the St. George II (0 BC–present) and the Chilia or Kilia (1600 CE–present). Several other internal lobes were constructed in the lakes and lagoons bordering the Danube Delta to the north (Chilia I and II) and toward the south (Dunavatz). Much of the alluvium in the delta and major expansion of its surface area in the form of lobes resulted from soil erosion associated with the clearing of forests in the Danube basin during the 1st and 2nd millennium. Geologist Liviu Giosan told The New York Times:

Travel video about destination The Danube Delta in Romania. Covering an area of around half a million hectares the Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe, the largest being in Romania. Following the collapse of the communist regime the area has become an increasingly popular tourist destination. With its unique network of interconnected eco-systems the Delta is one of the most important sanctuaries for more than three hundred species of bird as it contains an abundance of food as well as providing a good nesting area in a totally natural environment. The region’s most important fish are sturgeon, carp and catfish and though the fishing methods are somewhat dated the annual catch is highly impressive. The future of this fresh-water reserve located on the eastern edge of Eur...
Travel video about nature park The Danube Delta. The Danube Delta, the second largest in Europe after that of the Volga, is located in the north east of the Dobrudscha and covers a total area of 4,152 km². Two thirds of it is in Rumania, the remainder being in the Ukraine. The river, that in some areas is covered by reed, water lilies and numerous plant life, also boasts a large variety of rare birds such as the pelican, heron and cormorant that live side by side with seagulls, wild duck, geese, falcon and eagles that live in the willow forests. Since time immemorial, each day the waters of the Danube have washed 185,000 tons of mud into this coastal lake and also into the Black Sea and this has gradually created today’s delta that divides into two large sections: the River Delta in the We...

Danube Delta - a unique region in Europe - where one still may find, at least in certain places, untouched wild nature, unaltered by civilization. UNESCO site since 1996 and "Landscape Of The Year 2007 - 2009", the Danube Delta is THE PLACE where you go once to remain with the desire to return. Spring and autumn are excellent for photographers - weather is not to warm, birds and other animals may be seen everywhere, even if these are not always easy to photograph. And evening may reveal beautiful landscapes in sunset warm light. (Cristi Alexe, fpix.eu - Danube Delta Photo Tour) A slideshow with pictures from the Danube Delta Photo Tour 22-27 May 2009. In the furthest eastern corner of Romania, along the border to Ukraine, the River Danube flows into the Black Sea. It splits into three large tributaries, between which countless lakes and waterways form the largest reed bed in Europe – the Danube Delta. It is a remote life and many areas can only be reached by boat, a reason why there is no industry here. Most of the people that live here are self sufficient and live off whatever the Delta or their own gardens offer. Sep 1997 The grandiose schemes of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu turned the Danube River Delta into a desert-like dust bowl. In the 1980s he decided to transform Europe's richest land into a breadbasket to feed Eastern Europe. Instead, his system of dykes, dams and artificial lakes wreaked massive environmental destruction. By the time of Ceausescu's demise in 1989, 40,000 ha of the Delta had been destroyed. With the disappearance of the fish, birds and rare mammals went the traditional lifestyle of the Lipovenes, ethnic Ukrainians who'd fled Russia, and who relied on the wildlife of the Delta - especially the giant sturgeon. Today, weed-filled fields still remain useless for farming, while fish collecting stations and salt mines lie disused. However, the Delta is making a remarkable...

http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com The Danube Delta is a mecca for birders (which Steve and I are not but it was part of the Romania tour) who come to see migrating birds that come from as far away as China and Africa. This Biosphere can be explored as part of a Danube River Cruise, on day trips and boat excursions from Tulcea. Our Explore Worldwide group took a ferry across a section of the Danube, which was definitely not Blue, to Tulcea and prepared to board a boat for two nights. The mighty Danube not only runs through: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Ukraine; but the Danube Biosphere also has the third largest biodiversity in the world! Only the Great Barrier Reef and Galapagos Archipelago in Ecuador exceed it. This should be interesting....

Principala nou...
