There are few places in the United States currently suffering more economic woes than the mid-west state of Ohio. Traditionally a major industrial center the state has seen more than a quarter of a million manufacturing jobs disappear in the last eight years.
Ohio has always proved to be a key battleground for US presidential elections - an all-important swing state. This year will be no different and the worsening economic situation has already prompted the presidential candidates to invest heavily in courting the state's voters with promises of new jobs.
In Dayton, a city of 160,000 people in western Ohio, manufacturing jobs once thrived, but today those well paying positions are almost impossible to find.
Delphi, the auto parts producer for General Motors and one of the city's main employers, shut five of their six plants. It also filed for bankruptcy in the US, after outsourcing hundreds of thousands of jobs to other countries like Mexico or China.
We the People travelled to Dayton to listen to how people are getting by with almost no prospect for restoring their core manufacturing industry.

It's been about 100 days into the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte.
Since he took power, the Philippine president has overseen the killing of more than 3,500 people in his war on drugs, offended world leaders and strained relations with the US.
In an exclusive first interview since he was sworn in, we talk to Duterte about his controversial war on drugs and foreign policy - including deteriorating relations with the United States and potentially warming relations with China.
"We have three million drug addicts, and it's growing. So if we do not interdict this problem, the next generation will be having a serious problem ... You destroy my country, I'll kill you. And it's a legitimate thing. If you destroy our young children, I will kill you. That is a very correct statement. There is nothing wrong in trying to preserve the interest of the next generation."
But Duterte admits that children and innocent people have also been killed in the bloody crackdown, and promises to investigate these extrajudicial killings, but he also says calls them "collateral damage".
When asked about the contested South China Sea, Duterte says:
"We will not give up anything there; it's an entitlement ... You can only negotiate to prevent a war ... They invited me for talks, and I will go."

The candidacy of Barack Obama has made race a central factor in the presidential campaign 2008. From the time of slavery, African-Americans have been one of the most disenfranchised groups in the US.
For the same work, African-Americans may earn half as much as white Americans. They're more likely to get convicted and receive harsher sentences for the same crimes.

Complete news bulletins from Kuala Lumpur stopped on 30 September 2010 and from Washington DC on 28 January 2011; they were replaced by news from Doha. All news inserts from Kuala Lumpur ceased in early 2011 and from Washington DC they ceased on 15 April 2012. By contrast, Al Jazeera English is one of the few global media outlets to maintain an agency in Gaza, and in Harare.

There are few places in the United States currently suffering more economic woes than the mid-west state of Ohio. Traditionally a major industrial center the state has seen more than a quarter of a million manufacturing jobs disappear in the last eight years.
Ohio has always proved to be a key battleground for US presidential elections - an all-important swing state. This year will be no different and the worsening economic situation has already prompted the presidential candidates to invest heavily in courting the state's voters with promises of new jobs.
In Dayton, a city of 160,000 people in western Ohio, manufacturing jobs once thrived, but today those well paying positions are almost impossible to find.
Delphi, the auto parts producer for General Motors and one of the city's main employers, shut five of their six plants. It also filed for bankruptcy in the US, after outsourcing hundreds of thousands of jobs to other countries like Mexico or China.
We the People travelled to Dayton to listen to how people are getting by with almost no prospect for restoring their core manufacturing industry.

It's been about 100 days into the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte.
Since he took power, the Philippine president has overseen the killing of more than 3,500 people in his war on drugs, offended world leaders and strained relations with the US.
In an exclusive first interview since he was sworn in, we talk to Duterte about his controversial war on drugs and foreign policy - including deteriorating relations with the United States and potentially warming relations with China.
"We have three million drug addicts, and it's growing. So if we do not interdict this problem, the next generation will be having a serious problem ... You destroy my country, I'll kill you. And it's a legitimate thing. If you destroy our young children, I will kill you. That is a very correct statement. There is nothing wrong in trying to preserve the interest of the next generation."
But Duterte admits that children and innocent people have also been killed in the bloody crackdown, and promises to investigate these extrajudicial killings, but he also says calls them "collateral damage".
When asked about the contested South China Sea, Duterte says:
"We will not give up anything there; it's an entitlement ... You can only negotiate to prevent a war ... They invited me for talks, and I will go."

Today many working mothers struggle with finding balance between work and home. The US is the only industrialised country that does not guarantee any financial support during family leave.
Currently, working mothers can take up to 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave to care for a newborn - compare that to countries like Norway and Sweden which provide a year or more of paid time off. Across the US some states are trying to change that.

It's been about 100 days into the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte.
Since he took power, the Philippine president has overseen the killing of more than 3,500 people in his war on drugs, offended world leaders and strained relations with the US.
In an exclusive first interview since he was sworn in, we talk to Duterte about his controversial war on drugs and foreign policy - including deteriorating relations with the United States and potentially warming relations with China.
In this second part of the interview, he discusses relations with the US.
In response to why the Philippines is "pursuing a different paradigm" in its relationship with the United States, Duterte explains that his disaffection with the American leadership is related to US criticism of his war on drugs.
"Had America just followed the normal procedure of calling the attention of a country to a certain violation, that would affect the laws of humanity, it could have just followed the due process, which is normally - according to everybody - going to the United Nations, airing a grievance and demanding an investigation. It should begin in the internal body of the United Nations because we are, or the Philippines is, a member of the United Nations."
Conflicting reports about the military ties between the United States and the Philippines have also plagued the media of late. Without finality, Duterte confirms the potential cease of several long withstanding agreements between the two countries, including military exercises, the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, and even the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty.
As controversy continues to follow the Philippine president, be it whilst publicly cursing US President Barack Obama, branding former Philippine president and dictator Ferdinand Marcos as "the best" the country has ever seen, or being in favour of "emergency" shortcuts to execute "democratic" decisions, only one thing seems certain: in Duterte's view, none of his decisions thus far warrant any unfavourable comparisons.
"For the life of me, I have yet to remember a thing that I did that would indicate that I have the traces of being dictatorial. From day one."

It's been about 100 days into the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte.
Since he took power, the Philippine president has overseen the killing of more than 3,500 people in his war on drugs, offended world leaders and strained relations with the US.
In an exclusive first interview since he was sworn in, we talk to Duterte about his controversial war on drugs and foreign policy - including deteriorating relations with the United States and potentially warming relations with China.
In this second part of the interview, he discusses relations with the US.
In response to why the Philippines is "pursuing a different paradigm" in its relationship with the United States, Duterte explains that his disaffection with the American leadership is related to US criticism of his war on drugs.
"Had America just followed the normal procedure of calling the attention of a country to a certain violation, that would affect the laws of humanity, it could have just followed the due process, which is normally - according to everybody - going to the United Nations, airing a grievance and demanding an investigation. It should begin in the internal body of the United Nations because we are, or the Philippines is, a member of the United Nations."
Conflicting reports about the military ties between the United States and the Philippines have also plagued the media of late. Without finality, Duterte confirms the potential cease of several long withstanding agreements between the two countries, including military exercises, the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, and even the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty.
As controversy continues to follow the Philippine president, be it whilst publicly cursing US President Barack Obama, branding former Philippine president and dictator Ferdinand Marcos as "the best" the country has ever seen, or being in favour of "emergency" shortcuts to execute "democratic" decisions, only one thing seems certain: in Duterte's view, none of his decisions thus far warrant any unfavourable comparisons.
"For the life of me, I have yet to remember a thing that I did that would indicate that I have the traces of being dictatorial. From day one."

AJ’s Investigative Unit has uncovered corruption in the Maldives. Secretly filmed interviews describe how men on mopeds carried millions in cash to the Maldives’ political elite. President Abdulla Yameen and his former deputy, Ahmed Adeeb, are accused of receiving cash in bags filled with up to $1m, so much that it was “difficult to carry,” according to one of the men who delivered it.
In a statement following its release, the Government of the Maldives said: “There is no evidence in this report connecting President Yameen or current members of his Government to any wrongdoing.” It noted that these claims already form part of a wider investigation initiated by President Yameen in February 2016: “We have asked Al Jazeera to provide any evidence they have which is relevant to this investigation.”

On December 2, 2015, two gunmen staged a cold-blooded attack in California, leaving 14 people dead and 21 wounded. At the time, the San Bernardino shooting was called the deadliest terror attack on US soil since September 11.
One of the gunman, later identified as Syed Rizwan Farook, was a San Bernardino county employee.
Farook and his 27-year-old wife Tashfeen Malik were hunted down and killed by the police soon after the shooting.
With the killers dead, the FBI pursued the investigation. The shooters' mobile phones were found smashed in a rubbish bin, but then the FBI made another discovery: they found Farook's work iPhone, which soon took centre stage.
"We have a promise and a commitment to the victims and the folks that were impacted by this that we will leave no stone unturned. It was critical to get into that phone. Probably the most important reason was: are there contacts or conversations to indicate that there were co-conspirators involved in the attack?" says San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan.
"The phone was a county phone, but he had the ability to lock the phone himself ... The concern is that based upon that version of IOS and that version of encryption, they can only make x amount of attempts to get into the phone. And then, it would have erased all the data. So that was the dilemma the FBI was in," Burguan adds.
The FBI asked Apple to write a new version of the operating system for the phone, which would allow them an infinite number of tries to guess the password without encrypting all the data. But Apple refused.
The FBI took Apple to court, but Apple pushed back. In the end, the FBI dropped the case and announced they'd paid an unnamed entity to hack the phone. The price was a secret, rumoured to be around $1m.
To the FBI's critics, the case against Apple looked like an attempt to set a legal precedent, forcing a company to undermine its own encryption.
"Apple helped a lot. Apple gave them access to all of the information they had, which included all the metadata, so they knew everybody who got called from this phone, everybody who called into this phone ..." Cindy Cohn, executive director of Electronic Frontier Foundation, says.
Apple vs FBI was not the first battle with the US government in the so-called crypto wars. Legal victories in the 1990s paved the way for widespread use of encryption on the internet.
In 2013, Edward Snowden leaked documents revealing the scope of the US government's surveillance programmes. They showed that the NSA (National Security Agency) had conscripted American tech and phone companies to help them spy.
Since then, more and more people are adopting end-to-end encryption to keep their communication private, blocking law enforcement from accessing information they want to investigate and prosecute crimes. It's what the FBI calls its "going dark" problem.
Moxie Marlinspike is one of the developers of the Signal protocol and the force behind the Signal App, which encrypts messages end-to-end by default. The protocol has been integrated by the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
"There's two ways to think about security. One is computer security ... this has been a losing strategy for 30 years, it's just not possible.... the other way to think about security is information security. Instead of trying to secure computers, you secure the information itself. And that's what actually works," he says.
The FBI contends that encryption by default is slowing down investigations, sucking up resources, and making the prevention and prosecution of criminal activity more difficult.
"We don't know what we don't know, and what we're missing because of this issue," says Sasha O'Connell, chief policy adviser for science and technology in the FBI.
But Marlinspike believes, "the thing about a world where the FBI never misses anything is that that's also a world where the FBI has access to everything."
The crypto wars show no sign of coming to an end.
"This is fundamental. You can't have security without strong cryptography, so if the FBI is going to continue to push for it, we have to continue to push back, because we want a secure internet," says Cohn.
