Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin (/ˈpuːtɪn/; Russian: Влади́мир Влади́мирович Пу́тин; IPA: [vlɐˈdʲimʲɪr vlɐˈdʲimʲɪrəvʲɪtɕ ˈputʲɪn], born 7 October 1952) has been the President of Russia since 7 May 2012, succeeding Dmitry Medvedev. Putin previously served as President from 2000 to 2008, and as Prime Minister from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2012. During his last term as Prime Minister, he was also the chairman of United Russia, the ruling party.
For 16 years, Putin was an officer in the KGB, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel before he retired to enter politics in his native Saint Petersburg in 1991. He moved to Moscow in 1996 and joined President Boris Yeltsin's administration where he rose quickly, becoming Acting President on 31 December 1999 when Yeltsin unexpectedly resigned. Putin easily won the subsequent 2000 presidential election and was reelected in 2004. Because of constitutionally mandated term limits, Putin was ineligible to run for a third consecutive presidential term in 2008. Dmitry Medvedev won the 2008 presidential election and appointed Putin as Prime Minister, beginning a period of so-called "tandemocracy". In September 2011, following a change in the law extending the presidential term from four years to six, Putin announced that he would seek a third, non-consecutive term as President in the 2012 presidential election, an announcement which led to large-scale protests in many Russian cities. In March 2012, he won the election, which was criticized for procedural irregularities, and is serving a six-year term.

Statoil ASA was a Norwegian petroleum company established in 1972, now part of StatoilHydro. The brand Statoil is retained as a chain of fuel stations owned by StatoilHydro. Statoil was the largest petroleum company in the Nordic countries and Norway's largest company. The name Statoil was a truncated form of the State's oil.
The Norwegian Energy Company Statoil ASA (NYSE:STO) along with its Italian partner Eni SpA (NYSE:E) and fellow Norwegian state-owned Petoro reported a "major" oil discovery of an estimated 500 million barrels of oil equivalent in the Barents Sea. Statoil said the breakthrough find is one of the most important discoveries on the Norwegian continental shelf in the last 10 years. Norway's oil production, most of which is extracted from the North Sea, peaked in 2001. Statoil said the reserves were found at the Skrugard prospect in the Barents Sea. The well was drilled by Transocean's (NYSE:RIG) Polar Pioneer rig. "The oil is expected to be easily producible," Statoil said. Shares of StatoilHydro are trading up 3.36% at $28.57.
Norway's Statoil ASA has found no commercial quantities of oil and gas at the northernmost wells it has ever drilled in the Arctic, the government-controlled company said Thursday. Statoil drilled three exploration wells this summer in the Hoop area of the Barents Sea. Statoil said in a statement this year's exploration campaign ended without any commercial discoveries. It didn't say whether drilling would resume next year, only that "exploring for hydrocarbons in the Barents Sea takes time and stamina." http://news.yahoo.com/statoil-comes-dry-arctic-wells-144824707.html http://www.wochit.com

Norwegian authorities have rejected an appeal by Greenpeace to stop Statoil from drilling the world's most northerly well on the Apollo prospect in the Barents Sea, the Norwegian oil company said on Friday. The company's announcement that it has been given approval to start drilling comes a day after Norwegian police removed seven Greenpeace protesters who had boarded the rig in an attempt to prevent it from reaching the Barents Sea and Bear Island, an uninhabited wildlife sanctuary that is home to rare species, including polar bears. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/environment/~3/lhBkgC1q6Zw/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com
Norway's giant oil company Statoil (NYSE:STO) has been approved a permit by the US Interior Department to drill for oil in deep waters off the coast of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico. It is the 6th permit issued by the federal government since last year's Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Statoil, in which the Norwegian government owns a 67% stake, had to meet tougher new drilling safety rules, imposed last year to help prevent another environmental catastrophe. Statoil spokesman Baard Glad Pedersen said, "We expect that new and additional regulations will lead to increased costs. An increase of 10 percent could be a good estimate." Statoil is the fourth-largest holder of drilling licenses in the Gulf of Mexico, a key area of development for the company. Statoil has extensive offshore holdin...
CEO Helge Lund said on Tuesday, a day after Moscow cut off supplies to Ukraine over a price dispute, Norway's Statoil could increase gas supplies to the European Union but would not be able to replace Russian gas. According to company data, Statoil is the second largest supplier of natural gas to the European market, with a market share of around 14 percent. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/He5_o7oPChY/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com
