NCI-designated Cancer Centers are a group of 69 cancer research institutions in the United States supported by the National Cancer Institute.
Three designations are recognized: Comprehensive Cancer Centers, Cancer Centers, and Basic Laboratory Cancer Centers. As of 2015, there are 45 Comprehensive Cancer Centers, 17 Cancer Centers, and 7 Basic Laboratory Cancer Centers. Receiving the NCI-designation places cancer centers among the top 4 percent of the approximately 1500 cancer centers in the United States.
The standards for Comprehensive Cancer Centers are the more restrictive of the two types. These facilities must demonstrate expertise in each of three areas: laboratory, clinical, and behavioral and population-based research. Comprehensive Cancer Centers are expected to initiate and conduct early phase, innovative clinical trials and to participate in the NCI's cooperative groups by providing leadership and recruiting patients for trials. Comprehensive Cancer Centers must also conduct activities in outreach and education, and provide information on advances in healthcare for both healthcare professionals and the public.
Cancer, also known as a malignant tumor or malignant neoplasm, is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. Possible signs and symptoms include: a new lump, abnormal bleeding, a prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss, and a change in bowel movements among others. While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they may also occur due to other issues. There are over 100 different known cancers that affect humans.
Tobacco use is the cause of about 22% of cancer deaths. Another 10% is due to obesity, a poor diet, lack of physical activity, and consumption of alcohol. Other factors include certain infections, exposure to ionizing radiation, and environmental pollutants. In the developing world nearly 20% of cancers are due to infections such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and human papillomavirus (HPV). These factors act, at least partly, by changing the genes of a cell. Typically many such genetic changes are required before cancer develops. Approximately 5–10% of cancers are due to genetic defects inherited from a person's parents. Cancer can be detected by certain signs and symptoms or screening tests. It is then typically further investigated by medical imaging and confirmed by biopsy.
New Mexico (Spanish: Nuevo México [ˈnweβo ˈmexiko]; Navajo: Yootó Hahoodzo [jo:tó haho:dzo]) is a state located in the southwestern region of the United States. It was admitted to the union as the 47th state on January 6, 1912. It is usually considered one of the Mountain States. New Mexico is the fifth-most extensive, the 36th-most populous, and the sixth-least densely populated of the 50 United States.
Inhabited by indigenous peoples of the Americas for many centuries before European exploration, New Mexico was subsequently part of the Imperial Spanish viceroyalty of New Spain. Later, it was part of Mexico before becoming a U.S. territory and eventually a U.S. state. Among U.S. states, New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanics, including descendants of Spanish colonists who have lived in the area for more than 400 years. It also has the second-highest percentage of Native Americans after Alaska, and the fourth-highest total number of Native Americans after California, Oklahoma, and Arizona. The nations in the state consist of mostly Navajo, Pueblo, and Apache peoples. As a result, the demographics and culture of the state are unique for their strong Hispanic and Native American influences, both of which are reflected in the state flag. The scarlet and gold colors of the New Mexico flag are taken from the royal standards of Spain, along with the ancient sun symbol of the Zia, a Pueblo-related tribe.

The USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center is involved in cancer research, with nearly 200 members investigating the complex origins and progression of cancer, developing prevention strategies and searching for cures. Located in Los Angeles, California, the center is part of the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) and is affiliated with USC Norris Cancer Hospital. USC Norris is designated by the National Cancer Institute as one of the nation's 40 comprehensive cancer centers, a select group of institutions providing leadership in cancer treatment, research, prevention and education. USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center has held this designation since 1973, when it was named as one of the first eight comprehensive cancer centers.
USC Norris underwent a major expansion with the addition of the Norman Topping Tower in 1996 and the Harlyne J. Norris Cancer Research Tower in 2007. These facilities joined the original USC Norris (Ezralow Tower) building to establish a trio of structures.

When Adam first came to the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, he had cancer throughout much of his body. What started as testicular cancer had moved up to his kidneys, his lungs, and his brain. His condition was critical and his treatment needs were complex. There are very few places in the world where Adam could have found the care he received here. His case demanded that multiple sub-specialists – including lung surgeons, brain surgeons, urologists, and cancer surgeons – coordinate their work over a long period of time. Fortunately for Adam, all the care, expertise, and dedication he needed resides right here at the UNM Cancer Center. Today Adam is cancer free. His recovery required him to relearn some basic motor skills, but he accomplished that – and much more. Now he’s back in colleg...
