Burkina Faso (i/bərˈkiːnə ˌfɑːsoʊ/ bər-KEE-nə FAH-soh; French: [buʁkina faso]) is a landlocked country in West Africa around 274,200 square kilometres (105,900 sq mi) in size. It is surrounded by six countries: Mali to the north; Niger to the east; Benin to the southeast; Togo and Ghana to the south; and Ivory Coast to the southwest. Its capital is Ouagadougou. As of 2014, its population was estimated at just over 17.3 million.
Formerly called the Republic of Upper Volta, the country was renamed "Burkina Faso" on 4 August 1984 by then-President Thomas Sankara. Residents of Burkina Faso are known as Burkinabé (/bərˈkiːnəbeɪ/ bər-KEE-nə-bay). French is an official language of government and business.
Before the conquest of what is now Burkina Faso by the French and other colonial powers during the late 19th century the country was ruled by various ethnic groups including the Mossi kingdoms. After gaining independence from France in 1960, the country underwent many governmental changes. Blaise Compaoré was the most recent president and ruled the country from 1987 until he was ousted from power by the popular youth upheaval of 31 October 2014. This resulted in a semi-presidential republic which lasted from October 2014 to September 2015. On 17 September 2015 the provisional government was in turn toppled by an apparent military coup d'état carried out by the Regiment of Presidential Security. On 24 September 2015, after pressure from the African Union, ECOWAS, and the armed forces, the military junta agreed to step down, and Michel Kafando was reinstated as Acting President.
In late October, the landlocked African nation of Burkina Faso saw the end of its president’s 27-year-long reign. A popular revolution terminated Blaise Compaoré’s term after he tried to change the constitution so that he could run for a fifth consecutive term. Cornered by an angry mob in his presidential palace, "Beau Blaise" fled the country along with his entourage as protesters torched the National Assembly and other symbols of the old regime. Now in exile, Compaoré is rumored to be living in luxury on the Ivory Coast. In Burkina Faso, a new transitional government has emerged, led by President Michel Kafando and his prime minister, Lieutenant-Colonel Yacouba Isaac Zida. VICE News went to the streets of Burkina Faso’s capital of Ouagadougou in the midst of the revolution to document...
There has been a coup in Burkina Faso. The presidential guard announced on television that it had dissolved what it described as the deviant transitional government. A member of the guard, General Gilbert Diendere, has been named as transitional leader. All borders have been closed and a curfew imposed. The head of parliament has called on the army to intervene in order to stop the action of what he said was a small group of military men. The presidential guard has fired warning shots in the capital Ouagadougou as crowds gather in protest. (Last year the long-serving president Blaise Compaore was toppled in a popular uprising.) While visiting Burkina Faso with HOPE4FRICA, a non-profit micro-lending organization, we attended a church service in the Mossi Village of Kokologo. The service in a small church included much singing with an accompaniment of traditional African musical instraments complimented with modern ones. There were several choirs of women who led the congregation of about 500 people in a three hour service. Here is just a small sample of the congregation singing a traditional Christian hymn in their native language of Moore. March, 2014

To contend with the risk of exclusion created by user fees, those implementing the Bamako Initiative (BI) were asked to organise exemption schemes for the indigent. But those exemption schemes were never put in place in Africa due to difficulties identifying the indigent. An action research was implemented to test the hypothesis that a community-based process for selecting beneficiaries of user-fee exemptions in an African environment of BI organisation is feasible and effective.
