We are at the Ripley’s Believe it or not museum in Key West, Florida. Let’s go inside and I’ll give you complete tour of everything in it. This is the skeleton of the Fiji Island Mermaid, you can see the body of a fish and the skull that looks humanoid. A man by the name of Barnum charged 25 cents per head to view this in 1842. Now, is it real? No, when he was about to die, Barnum revealed the secret; he had fused the skeletons of the upper half of a monkey with the lower half of a fish. This is world’s greatest hoax by the way.
This is a human Shrunken Torso: The Jivaro Indians of Ecuador were the only people on earth to have practiced the ancient craft of head shrinking. The heads of slain enemies were carefully preserved in a week long ritual and shrunken to a quarter of their normal size. This shrunken torso was originally purchased in Panama by author Ernest Hemingway.
Next is a Naga Mask, the Nagas are a reptilian race who lived underground and their sculptures are found in many Asian countries. This mask was used to help exorcise evil spirits from people who are believed to be possessed. Robert Ripley bought this mask from the island of Sri Lanka in 1936.
Here you can see a Native American ritual called Okipa practiced by a tribe called Mandan in North Dakota. There are three stages of self-mutilation in this ritual; warriors were first hung from rafters with ropes attached by pegs inserted under their flesh. Buffalo skulls would be skewered to their legs to weigh them down. Their flesh would tear after a few minutes and they would fall.
This is the West African Hate God used as a Voodoo doll to hex the enemies. The Kondes people of West Africa brought this culture into America in 1809 when they came in as black slaves. Nails would be inserted into the doll slowly; day by day which is supposed to inflict painful mental and physical suffering on the enemy who would be tortured by an invisible spirit.
Speaking of torture, the medieval Germans used a more direct technique to torture women who were unfaithful. This device called the Iron Maiden has 14 spikes that are aligned to pierce the eyes, the throat and the heart. The victims, who were put inside, were so mutilated by this device, that it was often set on a drawbridge over water. The mangled body could then be released into the water without having to be handled.
Here is a coffin with a bell attached to it and you can see it ringing. In the early 19th century, because of medical misdiagnosis, being buried alive by mistake occurred with alarming regularity. To prevent premature burials, coffins were designed with alarm bell attachments. If a “dead” body awoke within the coffin, the attached bell could be rung from inside the coffin to alert gravediggers or other passerby. This is where the phrase “saved by the bell” came from.
This is a model of a human unicorn who lived in Manchuria, China. His name was Wang and he had a 13 inch horn growing out the back of his head. He was a normal human being in all other aspects and was photographed by Robert Ripley in 1931.

The Greatest American Hero is an American TV series which aired for three seasons from 1981 to 1983 on ABC. It premiered as a two hour movie pilot on March 18, 1981. It starred William Katt as teacher Ralph Hinkley (or Hanley), Robert Culp as FBI Agent Bill Maxwell, and Connie Sellecca as lawyer Pam Davidson. The series has a fanbase around the world, making it a cult classic. The series was created by producer Stephen J. Cannell and Joel Colon who helped design the costumes. The show is typical of his style of character-driven quirky drama, where the plot is secondary to the relationships among the characters.
Premise
The series is a superhero drama-comedy. Ralph Hinkley is a schoolteacher for "special students". Determined to get through to them, Ralph took them on a "geological survey" field trip to the desert. Coming back from the field trip later that night, the school bus breaks down. Ralph started to walk back through the desert to get help and he encounters a swerving car driven by FBI Special Agent Bill Maxwell (Culp) that stops just in time to avoid hitting Hinkley. Maxwell insists that he could not control the car. Then two bright purple lights appear in the sky and they both jump in the car and try to get away, but the car will not start and the doors lock by themselves trapping them inside.
They are surprised to find that the lights come from an alien spacecraft. The alien tells Ralph and Bill (by way of the car radio) that they are to work together to save the world and Ralph will be given the power to change it. They are given a black case. Later Ralph opens it and finds a really cool-looking red suit (with cape) which endows him with superhuman abilities. Bill runs off from fear, but later contacts Ralph, leading to an awkward partnership as the two try to use the powers of the suit (which Bill calls the "magic jammies") to fight crime.
The novelty of the show is based on Ralph's inability to properly learn to use the suit, and even learn the use of it's various capabilities, other than by trial and error, because he lost the instruction manual in the desert. A recurring gag involves Ralph clumsily trying to strip off his outer clothes to activate the suit before the enemies can get away.
Pam Davidson is an attorney, who often joins Ralph and Bill on their adventures. She is an attorney who handled Ralph's divorce and later becomes his wife.
As previously mentioned, the main character's name was originally Ralph Hinkley, but after the assassination attempt of Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley, Jr. on March 30, 1981 (only 12 days after the pilot episode aired), the character's last name was amended to "Hanley" for the Season 1 episode "Reseda Rose". For the rest of the 1st season, he was either "Ralph" or "Mister H". During the episode aired the night of the assassination attempt, the sound of a jet airplane was used to dub over the last name being spoken, and in subsequent episodes there was overdubbing of his students calling him "Mr. H" instead of "Mr. Hinkley." In the episode where Ralph is given a promotion and his own (tiny) office space, we see the name "Ralph Hanley" on the door plaque. At the start of the 2nd season the name had changed back to Hinkley.
Ralph's uniform and hero persona
The hero persona never receives a "superhero name," either, although Scarbury sings the Elton John song "Rocket Man" in the pilot.
The powers of the red suit were somewhat broad, but still were "similar" enough to the abilities of Superman that Warner Bros., the owners of DC Comics, filed a lawsuit against ABC which was, ultimately, dismissed as the premise's core concept of a human receiving an alien costume/weapon to fight evil was closer to that of the Silver Age Green Lantern.
The symbol on Ralph's uniform resembles the Chinese character "center" [中]. As the symbol is red in color, Hong Kong television station TVB called the Cantonese-dubbed version of the show "Sky Flying Red Centre Hero" [飛天紅中俠].

Ripley's Believe It or Not! is an American franchise, founded by Robert Ripley, which deals in bizarre events and items so strange and unusual that readers might question the claims. The Believe It or Not panel proved popular and was later adapted into a wide variety of formats, including radio, television, comic books, a chain of museums and a book series.
The Ripley collection includes 20,000 photographs, 30,000 artifacts and more than 100,000 cartoon panels. With 80-plus attractions, the Orlando-based Ripley Entertainment, Inc., a division of the Jim Pattison Group, is a global company with an annual attendance of more than 12 million guests. Ripley Entertainment's publishing and broadcast divisions oversee numerous projects, including the syndicated TV series, the newspaper cartoon panel, books, posters and games.

Ripley first called his cartoon feature, originally involving sports feats, Champs and Chumps, and it premiered on December 19, 1918, in the New York Globe. Ripley began adding items unrelated to sports, and in October 1919, he changed the title to Believe It or Not. When the Globe folded in 1923, Ripley moved to the New York Evening Post. That same year, Ripley hired Norbert Pearlroth as his researcher, and Pearlroth spent the next 52 years of his life in the New York Public Library, working ten hours a day and six days a week in order to find unusual facts for Ripley.

Believe It or Not
The first season, beginning in March 1949, featured Robert L. Ripley sitting in a "living room" recounting tales of strange stories. Ripley died on 27 May and was replaced by Robert St. John who continued to November 1949. The second season, beginning in January 1950, was a dramatic anthology series based on Ripley's stories and featured guest players every week.

Most Deadly Journey In The World (Believe It Or Not) Bishwa Ijtema (or Bishsho Istema, Bengali: বিশ্ব ইজতেমা, the World or Global Congregation or Meeting) is an annual Aalmi Ijtema held at Tongi, Bangladesh by the river Turag. The heads of slain enemies were carefully preserved in a week long ritual and shrunken to a quarter of their normal size. This shrunken torso was originally purchased in Panama by author Ernest Hemingway.
Next is a Naga Mask, the Nagas are a reptilian race who lived underground and their sculptures are found in many Asian countries. This mask was used to help exorcise evil spirits from people who are believed to be possessed. Robert Ripley bought this mask from the island of Sri Lanka in 1936.
Here you can see a Native American ritual called Okipa practiced by a tribe called Mandan in North Dakota. There are three stages of self-mutilation in this ritual; warriors were first hung from rafters with ropes attached by pegs inserted under their flesh. Buffalo skulls would be skewered to their legs to weigh them down. Their flesh would tear after a few minutes and they would fall.
This is the West African Hate God used as a Voodoo doll to hex the enemies. The Kondes people of West Africa brought this culture into America in 1809 when they came in as black slaves. Nails would be inserted into the doll slowly; day by day which is supposed to inflict painful mental and physical suffering on the enemy who would be tortured by an invisible spirit.
Speaking of torture, the medieval Germans used a more direct technique to torture women who were unfaithful. This device called the Iron Maiden has 14 spikes that are aligned to pierce the eyes, the throat and the heart. The victims, who were put inside, were so mutilated by this device, that it was often set on a drawbridge over water. The mangled body could then be released into the water without having to be handled.
Here is a coffin with a bell attached to it and you can see it ringing. In the early 19th century, because of medical misdiagnosis, being buried alive by mistake occurred with alarming regularity. To prevent premature burials, coffins were designed with alarm bell attachments. If a “dead” body awoke within the coffin, the attached bell could be rung from inside the coffin to alert gravediggers or other passerby. This is where the phrase “saved by the bell” came from.
This is a model of a human unicorn who lived in Manchuria, China. His name was Wang and he had a 13 inch horn growing out the back of his head. He was a normal human being in all other aspects and was photographed by Robert Ripley in 1931.

It starred William Katt as teacher Ralph Hinkley (or Hanley), Robert Culp as FBI Agent Bill Maxwell, and Connie Sellecca as lawyer Pam Davidson. The series has a fanbase around the world, making it a cult classic. The series was created by producer Stephen J. Cannell and Joel Colon who helped design the costumes. The show is typical of his style of character-driven quirky drama, where the plot is secondary to the relationships among the characters.
Premise
The series is a superhero drama-comedy. Ralph Hinkley is a schoolteacher for "special students". Determined to get through to them, Ralph took them on a "geological survey" field trip to the desert. Coming back from the field trip later that night, the school bus breaks down. Ralph started to walk back through the desert to get help and he encounters a swerving car driven by FBI Special Agent Bill Maxwell (Culp) that stops just in time to avoid hitting Hinkley. Maxwell insists that he could not control the car. Then two bright purple lights appear in the sky and they both jump in the car and try to get away, but the car will not start and the doors lock by themselves trapping them inside.
They are surprised to find that the lights come from an alien spacecraft. The alien tells Ralph and Bill (by way of the car radio) that they are to work together to save the world and Ralph will be given the power to change it. They are given a black case. Later Ralph opens it and finds a really cool-looking red suit (with cape) which endows him with superhuman abilities. Bill runs off from fear, but later contacts Ralph, leading to an awkward partnership as the two try to use the powers of the suit (which Bill calls the "magic jammies") to fight crime.
The novelty of the show is based on Ralph's inability to properly learn to use the suit, and even learn the use of it's various capabilities, other than by trial and error, because he lost the instruction manual in the desert. A recurring gag involves Ralph clumsily trying to strip off his outer clothes to activate the suit before the enemies can get away.
Pam Davidson is an attorney, who often joins Ralph and Bill on their adventures. She is an attorney who handled Ralph's divorce and later becomes his wife.
As previously mentioned, the main character's name was originally Ralph Hinkley, but after the assassination attempt of Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley, Jr. on March 30, 1981 (only 12 days after the pilot episode aired), the character's last name was amended to "Hanley" for the Season 1 episode "Reseda Rose". For the rest of the 1st season, he was either "Ralph" or "Mister H". During the episode aired the night of the assassination attempt, the sound of a jet airplane was used to dub over the last name being spoken, and in subsequent episodes there was overdubbing of his students calling him "Mr. H" instead of "Mr. Hinkley." In the episode where Ralph is given a promotion and his own (tiny) office space, we see the name "Ralph Hanley" on the door plaque. At the start of the 2nd season the name had changed back to Hinkley.
Ralph's uniform and hero persona
The hero persona never receives a "superhero name," either, although Scarbury sings the Elton John song "Rocket Man" in the pilot.
The powers of the red suit were somewhat broad, but still were "similar" enough to the abilities of Superman that Warner Bros., the owners of DC Comics, filed a lawsuit against ABC which was, ultimately, dismissed as the premise's core concept of a human receiving an alien costume/weapon to fight evil was closer to that of the Silver Age Green Lantern.
The symbol on Ralph's uniform resembles the Chinese character "center" [中]. As the symbol is red in color, Hong Kong television station TVB called the Cantonese-dubbed version of the show "Sky Flying Red Centre Hero" [飛天紅中俠].
