World War II

World War II (WWII or WW2), also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although related conflicts began earlier. It involved the vast majority of the world's nations—including all of the great powers—eventually forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, and directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of "total war", the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by mass deaths of civilians, including the Holocaust (in which approximately 11 million people were killed) and the strategic bombing of industrial and population centres (in which approximately one million were killed, and which included the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki), it resulted in an estimated 50 million to 85 million fatalities. These made World War II the deadliest conflict in human history.

Segunda División

The Segunda División [seˈɣunda ðiβiˈsjon] (Second Division) of the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (LFP), or the Liga Adelante[liɣa aðeˈlante] for sponsorship reasons, is the second-highest division overall in the Spanish football league system after the Liga BBVA.

History

League format

As of 2010-11 the league contains 22 teams that play each other home and away for a 42 match season. Each year three teams are promoted to La Liga. The top two teams earn an automatic promotion. The third team to be promoted is the winner of a play-off between the next four best qualified teams in positions 3 through 6 (reserve teams are not eligible for promotion). The play-offs comprise two-legged semi-finals followed by a two-legged final. The bottom four are relegated to Segunda División B.

La Segunda

La Segunda (English: The second one) is a Chilean afternoon daily owned by El Mercurio SAP.

Their tendency is conservative, is the first Chilean newspaper to disclose information that occurred in the morning because it is evening. Its time distribution is from 14:00.

La Segunda (initially called La Segunda de Las Últimas Noticias) first appeared as a nightly on July 29, 1931, as an update of the then Evening Las Últimas Noticias, due to the overabundance of information originated during the fall of President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo .

The newspaper is remembered by the opposition to the government of Salvador Allende and its accession to the military regime. During those times was used as a means of government propaganda, publishing news with sensational language and confrontational, it was inappropriate for El Mercurio. Famous is the cover of La Segunda newspaper of July 24, 1975, which stated that members of the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR) were killing each other on the outside, being finally discovered that all were killed within Chile, known as Operation Colombo case. The headline that day read exterminados como ratas (exterminated like rats).
