Lady Frankenstein

Somewhere in Gothic Europe, Baron Frankenstein (Joseph Cotten) and his assistant Dr. Marshall (Paul Muller) are taking receipt of a freshly dug up human corpse from the local graverobber Lynch (Herbert Fux) - the Baron then requests that Lynch obtain him a fresh human corpse - dead no more than 6 hours. The next morning, the Baron's daughter Tania (Rosalba Neri) arrives home after completing her University course in medicine, and she is eager to join in her father's work, but he is unwilling to let her. Eventually the Baron and Dr. Marshall complete their work and sucessfully re-animate their self-constructed man, but with the brain of a criminal in his head, he turns on, and kills the Baron before escaping the castle. Trying to save her father's name, and stop the creature's rampage of death across the countryside, Tania insists on continuing the experimentation to design a second creature who will be able to fight the first... Inspired by the Universal horror films, looking like the Hammer films, and containing a fair dose of European style blood and nudity, Lady Frankenstein works surprisingly well. Taking only a very loose inspiration from Mary Shelley, the script is a simple gothic horror story, with a hint of romance. Generally well written, with enough characterisation to make it interesting, the film builds up to a good climax. The American cut of the film (reviewed here) was substanually altered, and is missing about 15 minutes of plot, hence there are some random jumps in the storylines that don't seem to make much sense, certainly the viewer should not expect any clever twists or moral messages. Relatively slow paced the story is interspersed with random sequences of the creature attacking villagers, obviously used to notch up the death and gore count. Director Mel Welles does a decent job here with some relatively plain direction that lets the story tell itself. More impressive are the gothic sets for Frankenstein's castle with look very nice, with a rather understated lab more akin to the Hammer films than the massive, elaborate get-ups that the Universal Frankenstein's were able to use. An all star euro-cult cast is present including Jess Franco's favourite Paul Muller giving a very good performance as Dr. Marshall, the always attractive Rosalba Neri as the Lady and character actor Herbert Fux in top sleazy form as the graverobber. Die Grossstadt aber das leicht verdiente Geld und oberflaechliche Freunde lassen Toni Training und Abendkurse vernachlaessigen und schliesslich stellt ihn sein Arbeitgeber vor die Tuer. Irma die sich in den feschen Sportler verliebt hat bittet den Vater um Hilfe. Dieser kann Toni schliesslich eine Anstellung als Taxifahrer verschaffen. Als aber Irma ein Studentenfest besucht und sich zudem auf ein Rendezvous mit dem Oberarzt Zbinden einlaesst, fuehlt sich Toni zurueckgesetzt. Eine verschwundene Halskette bringt ihn gar in den Verdacht, ein Dieb zu sein. Geplagt von Stress und Unsicherheit verliert er seine Stelle und geraet vollends in die Krise. Fuer Baenz wie fuer Toni beginnt eine schwierige Zeit des Umdenkens. Und Irma spielt dabei eine entscheidende Rolle.

Lady Frankenstein on The Schlocky Horror Picture Show Full Episode

Mwaaa haaa haaaa...yes Mad Scientists. We love 'em, don't we? And so does Nigel Honeybone on the Schlocky Horror Picture Show. I found this film in his bathroom under the sink. But I digress, The mono-maniacal world view, the handicapped assistants, the bubbling retorts, tampering in God's domain and so forth. The Mad Scientist is a staple of the genre, and sadly he doesn't come around much any more, except in anemic, fairly pointless exercises. I think Brent Spiner in Independence Day was the last half-decent Mad Scientist I saw, and he was mostly harmless. The 1999 film Bats reduced the Mad Scientist to typical post-modern irony. When asked why he Tampered In God's Domain, he simply replies "Because I'm a scientist, that's what we do!", while the very same year Deep Blue Sea featured that rarity, the Female Mad Scientist.Why so rare? This is a question I've asked myself again and again. Against all expectations, there simply aren't a whole lot of movies featuring Female Mad Scientists, at least not Mad in the classically accepted, hand-wringing, "I'll show them, I'll show them all!" sense of the word. By 1971, the Women's Lib movement was gathering momentum, so it was inevitable that a feminine version of the original Mad Scientist tale should surface. Lady Frankenstein promised that "Only The Monster She Made Could Satisfy Her Strange Desires!" - Let's see if it's true. Some flexibility may be required when defining Female Mad Scientists. A few thousand years of cultural pressure informs us on a near-DNA level that women are to be protected, and that they are more sensitive and in-tune to life and nature's patterns and vibrations. Overcoming stereotypes requires some actual effort on the part of the screenwriter, so it's the uncommon filmmaker, or the canny one searching for a marketable hook, who will breach the staid walls of tradition and give us a tale of a woman messing about with the natural order of things. The movie does fairly well by Rosalba Neri, billed as Sara Bay, who at the height of her beauty really steals your heart, spleen, liver, and all the fun bouncy bits. Her Tania is a calculating, self-centered bitch who's willing to drive a man to murder so she can enjoy a good-looking bonk. And who wouldn't? She has ample opportunity to hold her own against the male forces arrayed against her, for example matching Lynch bluntness for bluntness, her icy intellectualism a strong counterpoint to his earthy vulgarity. This brief exchange helps to lend an air of ambiguity to the following events, causing us to wonder the extent to which she will use her femininity to manipulate the men around her. After appearing in films from the misleadingly titled Too Much Johnson to Tora! Tora! Tora!, actor Joseph Cotten found his career frayed a little with The Abominable Doctor Phibes, The Screaming Woman, Soylent Green and Airport '77. His last film, The Survivor, made in 1981, was notable as the first Australian production to cost one million dollars. Captain Harris, played by Jane Mansfield's arm candy Mickey Hargitay, is one of the more distracting things about the movie. Not only does he seem to spend all his time either annoying Lynch or the Frankensteins, his mode of investigation seems suspiciously similar to the television detective Columbo, right down to "There's one thing I don't understand" and "Just one more question". He has no real bearing on the events of the movie, and advances the plot not one whit. He is The Filler That Walks Like A Man. Paul Muller plays Dr Charles Marshall. A Swiss actor, he was no stranger to the exploitation game, having appeared in I Vampiri in 1959, and numerous Jes Franco films like Count Dracula, A Virgin Among The Living Dead and Lesbian Vampires...I'll give you two guesses what that one's about. The most interesting name behind the camera was the director himself, Mel Welles, who by that time had already spent over decade working with the king of the B-movies, the great Roger Corman. Remember the manager with the outrageous accent in Little Shop Of Horrors? That's Mel. As usual, everything in the known universe seems to lead back to Roger Corman. Mel's last film, 2002's Raising Dead had exactly the opposite effect, and he died in 2005. The plot is paced quickly enough that we rarely notice its jagged edges don't quite fit together. Tania's notion of creating a monster to not only vindicate her father's theories but also to clean up his mess makes for a nice twist on an old story. If the monster is rather too obviously composed of mortician's wax, a glass eye and rubber gloves, it's at least a novel concept for the Frankenstein Monster. And I should mention the suspiciously modern-looking hats the men wear and their amazingly fake sideburns. Nothing says 'Nineteenth Century' like strange facial hair and obvious spirit gum.

In 1941/1942 he studied acting at the “Conservatoire National Supérieur d`Art Dramatique” in Paris. Until 1944 he had different engagements at theatres in Paris, e. g. “Theatre Pigalle”, “Salle Pleyel”, “Theatre des Ambassadeurs”. From 1944 to 1946 he was called up for military service in the French Army in Indochina shortly before the First Indochina War took place there. He caught malaria during that time and, in consequence of the disease, was left hard of hearing. From 1947 to 1948 he had different engagements at theatres and touring companies not only in France, but also in the French part of Allied-occupied Germany and in Florence, e. g. “Tournée Spectacles Moyses”, Teatro della Pergola. He acted, inter alia, under the direction of Georges Douking.

Film

Paul Muller appeared in over 230 films since his first role in 1948. He spent most of his life by working in Italy, his main country of residence. He worked over more than 60 years with most of the well-known European actresses and actors of classic cinema and with some famous names of the Cinema of Italy like Roberto Rossellini, Carlo Ponti, Federico Fellini, Mario Bava, Sergio Corbucci, Michelangelo Antonioni. He also made his appearance in films under the direction of Veit Harlan, Artur Brauner, Jesús "Jess" Franco, René Clement, Michael Curtiz, Richard Fleischer, Jean-Pierre Mocky and many others. Today he lives withdrawn near Rome.

Zur Finanzierung dieser Ausbildung vermietet Baenz ein Zimmer an Toni Schellenberg einen jungen Burschen vom Land mit vielversprechender Zukunft als Fussballer. Die Grossstadt aber das leicht verdiente Geld und oberflaechliche Freunde lassen Toni Training und Abendkurse vernachlaessigen und schliesslich stellt ihn sein Arbeitgeber vor die Tuer. Irma die sich in den feschen Sportler verliebt hat bittet den Vater um Hilfe. Dieser kann Toni schliesslich eine Anstellung als Taxifahrer verschaffen. Als aber Irma ein Studentenfest besucht und sich zudem auf ein Rendezvous mit dem Oberarzt Zbinden einlaesst, fuehlt sich Toni zurueckgesetzt. Eine verschwundene Halskette bringt ihn gar in den Verdacht, ein Dieb zu sein. Geplagt von Stress und Unsicherheit verliert er seine Stelle und geraet vollends in die Krise. Fuer Baenz wie fuer Toni beginnt eine schwierige Zeit des Umdenkens. Und Irma spielt dabei eine entscheidende Rolle.

Mwaaa haaa haaaa...yes Mad Scientists. We love 'em, don't we? And so does Nigel Honeybone on the Schlocky Horror Picture Show. I found this film in his bathroom under the sink. But I digress, The mono-maniacal world view, the handicapped assistants, the bubbling retorts, tampering in God's domain and so forth. The Mad Scientist is a staple of the genre, and sadly he doesn't come around much any more, except in anemic, fairly pointless exercises. I think Brent Spiner in Independence Day was the last half-decent Mad Scientist I saw, and he was mostly harmless. The 1999 film Bats reduced the Mad Scientist to typical post-modern irony. When asked why he Tampered In God's Domain, he simply replies "Because I'm a scientist, that's what we do!", while the very same year Deep Blue Sea featured that rarity, the Female Mad Scientist.Why so rare? This is a question I've asked myself again and again. Against all expectations, there simply aren't a whole lot of movies featuring Female Mad Scientists, at least not Mad in the classically accepted, hand-wringing, "I'll show them, I'll show them all!" sense of the word. By 1971, the Women's Lib movement was gathering momentum, so it was inevitable that a feminine version of the original Mad Scientist tale should surface. Lady Frankenstein promised that "Only The Monster She Made Could Satisfy Her Strange Desires!" - Let's see if it's true. Some flexibility may be required when defining Female Mad Scientists. A few thousand years of cultural pressure informs us on a near-DNA level that women are to be protected, and that they are more sensitive and in-tune to life and nature's patterns and vibrations. Overcoming stereotypes requires some actual effort on the part of the screenwriter, so it's the uncommon filmmaker, or the canny one searching for a marketable hook, who will breach the staid walls of tradition and give us a tale of a woman messing about with the natural order of things. The movie does fairly well by Rosalba Neri, billed as Sara Bay, who at the height of her beauty really steals your heart, spleen, liver, and all the fun bouncy bits. Her Tania is a calculating, self-centered bitch who's willing to drive a man to murder so she can enjoy a good-looking bonk. And who wouldn't? She has ample opportunity to hold her own against the male forces arrayed against her, for example matching Lynch bluntness for bluntness, her icy intellectualism a strong counterpoint to his earthy vulgarity. This brief exchange helps to lend an air of ambiguity to the following events, causing us to wonder the extent to which she will use her femininity to manipulate the men around her. After appearing in films from the misleadingly titled Too Much Johnson to Tora! Tora! Tora!, actor Joseph Cotten found his career frayed a little with The Abominable Doctor Phibes, The Screaming Woman, Soylent Green and Airport '77. His last film, The Survivor, made in 1981, was notable as the first Australian production to cost one million dollars. Captain Harris, played by Jane Mansfield's arm candy Mickey Hargitay, is one of the more distracting things about the movie. Not only does he seem to spend all his time either annoying Lynch or the Frankensteins, his mode of investigation seems suspiciously similar to the television detective Columbo, right down to "There's one thing I don't understand" and "Just one more question". He has no real bearing on the events of the movie, and advances the plot not one whit. He is The Filler That Walks Like A Man. Paul Muller plays Dr Charles Marshall. A Swiss actor, he was no stranger to the exploitation game, having appeared in I Vampiri in 1959, and numerous Jes Franco films like Count Dracula, A Virgin Among The Living Dead and Lesbian Vampires...I'll give you two guesses what that one's about. The most interesting name behind the camera was the director himself, Mel Welles, who by that time had already spent over decade working with the king of the B-movies, the great Roger Corman. Remember the manager with the outrageous accent in Little Shop Of Horrors? That's Mel. As usual, everything in the known universe seems to lead back to Roger Corman. Mel's last film, 2002's Raising Dead had exactly the opposite effect, and he died in 2005. The plot is paced quickly enough that we rarely notice its jagged edges don't quite fit together. Tania's notion of creating a monster to not only vindicate her father's theories but also to clean up his mess makes for a nice twist on an old story. If the monster is rather too obviously composed of mortician's wax, a glass eye and rubber gloves, it's at least a novel concept for the Frankenstein Monster. And I should mention the suspiciously modern-looking hats the men wear and their amazingly fake sideburns. Nothing says 'Nineteenth Century' like strange facial hair and obvious spirit gum.

Mwaaa haaa haaaa...yes Mad Scientists. We love 'em, don't we? And so does Nigel Honeybone on the Schlocky Horror Picture Show. I found this film in his bathroom under the sink. But I digress, The mono-maniacal world view, the handicapped assistants, the bubbling retorts, tampering in God's domain and so forth. The Mad Scientist is a staple of the genre, and sadly he doesn't come around much any more, except in anemic, fairly pointless exercises. I think Brent Spiner in Independence Day was the last half-decent Mad Scientist I saw, and he was mostly harmless. The 1999 film Bats reduced the Mad Scientist to typical post-modern irony. Somewhere in Gothic Europe, Baron Frankenstein (Joseph Cotten) and his assistant Dr. Marshall (Paul Muller) are taking receipt of a freshly dug up human corpse from the local graverobber Lynch (Herbert Fux) - the Baron then requests that Lynch obtain him a fresh human corpse - dead no more than 6 hours. The next morning, the Baron's daughter Tania (Rosalba Neri) arrives home after completing her University course in medicine, and she is eager to join in her father's work, but he is unwilling to let her. Eventually the Baron and Dr. Marshall complete their work and sucessfully re-animate their self-constructed man, but with the brain of a criminal in his head, he turns on, and kills the Baron before escaping the castle. Trying to save her father's name, and stop the creature's rampage of death across the countryside, Tania insists on continuing the experimentation to design a second creature who will be able to fight the first... Inspired by the Universal horror films, looking like the Hammer films, and containing a fair dose of European style blood and nudity, Lady Frankenstein works surprisingly well. Taking only a very loose inspiration from Mary Shelley, the script is a simple gothic horror story, with a hint of romance. Generally well written, with enough characterisation to make it interesting, the film builds up to a good climax. The American cut of the film (reviewed here) was substanually altered, and is missing about 15 minutes of plot, hence there are some random jumps in the storylines that don't seem to make much sense, certainly the viewer should not expect any clever twists or moral messages. Relatively slow paced the story is interspersed with random sequences of the creature attacking villagers, obviously used to notch up the death and gore count. Director Mel Welles does a decent job here with some relatively plain direction that lets the story tell itself. More impressive are the gothic sets for Frankenstein's castle with look very nice, with a rather understated lab more akin to the Hammer films than the massive, elaborate get-ups that the Universal Frankenstein's were able to use. An all star euro-cult cast is present including Jess Franco's favourite Paul Muller giving a very good performance as Dr. Marshall, the always attractive Rosalba Neri as the Lady and character actor Herbert Fux in top sleazy form as the graverobber. Mwaaa haaa haaaa...yes Mad Scientists. We love 'em, don't we? And so does Nigel Honeybone on the Schlocky Horror Picture Show. I found this film in his bathroom under the sink. But I digress, The mono-maniacal world view, the handicapped assistants, the bubbling retorts, tampering in God's domain and so forth. The Mad Scientist is a staple of the genre, and sadly he doesn't come around much any more, except in anemic, fairly pointless exercises. I think Brent Spiner in Independence Day was the last half-decent Mad Scientist I saw, and he was mostly harmless. The 1999 film Bats reduced the Mad Scientist to typical post-modern irony. When asked why he Tampered In God's Domain, he simply replies "Because I'm a scientist, that's what we do!", while the very same year Deep Blue Sea featured that rarity, the Female Mad Scientist.Why so rare? This is a question I've asked myself again and again. Against all expectations, there simply aren't a whole lot of movies featuring Female Mad Scientists, at least not Mad in the classically accepted, hand-wringing, "I'll show them, I'll show them all!" sense of the word. By 1971, the Women's Lib movement was gathering momentum, so it was inevitable that a feminine version of the original Mad Scientist tale should surface. Lady Frankenstein promised that "Only The Monster She Made Could Satisfy Her Strange Desires!" - Let's see if it's true. Some flexibility may be required when defining Female Mad Scientists. A few thousand years of cultural pressure informs us on a near-DNA level that women are to be protected, and that they are more sensitive and in-tune to life and nature's patterns and vibrations. Overcoming stereotypes requires some actual effort on the part of the screenwriter, so it's the uncommon filmmaker, or the canny one searching for a marketable hook, who will breach the staid walls of tradition and give us a tale of a woman messing about with the natural order of things. The movie does fairly well by Rosalba Neri, billed as Sara Bay, who at the height of her beauty really steals your heart, spleen, liver, and all the fun bouncy bits. Her Tania is a calculating, self-centered bitch who's willing to drive a man to murder so she can enjoy a good-looking bonk. And who wouldn't? She has ample opportunity to hold her own against the male forces arrayed against her, for example matching Lynch bluntness for bluntness, her icy intellectualism a strong counterpoint to his earthy vulgarity. This brief exchange helps to lend an air of ambiguity to the following events, causing us to wonder the extent to which she will use her femininity to manipulate the men around her. After appearing in films from the misleadingly titled Too Much Johnson to Tora! Tora! Tora!, actor Joseph Cotten found his career frayed a little with The Abominable Doctor Phibes, The Screaming Woman, Soylent Green and Airport '77. His last film, The Survivor, made in 1981, was notable as the first Australian production to cost one million dollars. Captain Harris, played by Jane Mansfield's arm candy Mickey Hargitay, is one of the more distracting things about the movie. Not only does he seem to spend all his time either annoying Lynch or the Frankensteins, his mode of investigation seems suspiciously similar to the television detective Columbo, right down to "There's one thing I don't understand" and "Just one more question". He has no real bearing on the events of the movie, and advances the plot not one whit. He is The Filler That Walks Like A Man. Paul Muller plays Dr Charles Marshall. A Swiss actor, he was no stranger to the exploitation game, having appeared in I Vampiri in 1959, and numerous Jes Franco films like Count Dracula, A Virgin Among The Living Dead and Lesbian Vampires...I'll give you two guesses what that one's about. The most interesting name behind the camera was the director himself, Mel Welles, who by that time had already spent over decade working with the king of the B-movies, the great Roger Corman. Remember the manager with the outrageous accent in Little Shop Of Horrors? That's Mel. As usual, everything in the known universe seems to lead back to Roger Corman. Mel's last film, 2002's Raising Dead had exactly the opposite effect, and he died in 2005. The plot is paced quickly enough that we rarely notice its jagged edges don't quite fit together. Tania's notion of creating a monster to not only vindicate her father's theories but also to clean up his mess makes for a nice twist on an old story. If the monster is rather too obviously composed of mortician's wax, a glass eye and rubber gloves, it's at least a novel concept for the Frankenstein Monster. And I should mention the suspiciously modern-looking hats the men wear and their amazingly fake sideburns. Nothing says 'Nineteenth Century' like strange facial hair and obvious spirit gum.

This brief exchange helps to lend an air of ambiguity to the following events, causing us to wonder the extent to which she will use her femininity to manipulate the men around her. After appearing in films from the misleadingly titled Too Much Johnson to Tora! Tora! Tora!, actor Joseph Cotten found his career frayed a little with The Abominable Doctor Phibes, The Screaming Woman, Soylent Green and Airport '77. His last film, The Survivor, made in 1981, was notable as the first Australian production to cost one million dollars. Captain Harris, played by Jane Mansfield's arm candy Mickey Hargitay, is one of the more distracting things about the movie. Not only does he seem to spend all his time either annoying Lynch or the Frankensteins, his mode of investigation seems suspiciously similar to the television detective Columbo, right down to "There's one thing I don't understand" and "Just one more question". He has no real bearing on the events of the movie, and advances the plot not one whit. He is The Filler That Walks Like A Man. Paul Muller plays Dr Charles Marshall. A Swiss actor, he was no stranger to the exploitation game, having appeared in I Vampiri in 1959, and numerous Jes Franco films like Count Dracula, A Virgin Among The Living Dead and Lesbian Vampires...I'll give you two guesses what that one's about. The most interesting name behind the camera was the director himself, Mel Welles, who by that time had already spent over decade working with the king of the B-movies, the great Roger Corman. Remember the manager with the outrageous accent in Little Shop Of Horrors? That's Mel. As usual, everything in the known universe seems to lead back to Roger Corman. Mel's last film, 2002's Raising Dead had exactly the opposite effect, and he died in 2005. The plot is paced quickly enough that we rarely notice its jagged edges don't quite fit together. Tania's notion of creating a monster to not only vindicate her father's theories but also to clean up his mess makes for a nice twist on an old story. If the monster is rather too obviously composed of mortician's wax, a glass eye and rubber gloves, it's at least a novel concept for the Frankenstein Monster. And I should mention the suspiciously modern-looking hats the men wear and their amazingly fake sideburns. Nothing says 'Nineteenth Century' like strange facial hair and obvious spirit gum.

Somewhere in Gothic Europe, Baron Frankenstein (Joseph Cotten) and his assistant Dr. Marshall (Paul Muller) are taking receipt of a freshly dug up human corpse from the local graverobber Lynch (Herbert Fux) - the Baron then requests that Lynch obtain him a fresh human corpse - dead no more than 6 hours. The next morning, the Baron's daughter Tania (Rosalba Neri) arrives home after completing her University course in medicine, and she is eager to join in her father's work, but he is unwilling to let her. Eventually the Baron and Dr. Marshall complete their work and sucessfully re-animate their self-constructed man, but with the brain of a criminal in his head, he turns on, and kills the Baron before escaping the castle. Trying to save her father's name, and stop the creature's rampage of death across the countryside, Tania insists on continuing the experimentation to design a second creature who will be able to fight the first... Inspired by the Universal horror films, looking like the Hammer films, and containing a fair dose of European style blood and nudity, Lady Frankenstein works surprisingly well. Taking only a very loose inspiration from Mary Shelley, the script is a simple gothic horror story, with a hint of romance. Generally well written, with enough characterisation to make it interesting, the film builds up to a good climax. The American cut of the film (reviewed here) was substanually altered, and is missing about 15 minutes of plot, hence there are some random jumps in the storylines that don't seem to make much sense, certainly the viewer should not expect any clever twists or moral messages. Relatively slow paced the story is interspersed with random sequences of the creature attacking villagers, obviously used to notch up the death and gore count. Director Mel Welles does a decent job here with some relatively plain direction that lets the story tell itself. More impressive are the gothic sets for Frankenstein's castle with look very nice, with a rather understated lab more akin to the Hammer films than the massive, elaborate get-ups that the Universal Frankenstein's were able to use. An all star euro-cult cast is present including Jess Franco's favourite Paul Muller giving a very good performance as Dr. Marshall, the always attractive Rosalba Neri as the Lady and character actor Herbert Fux in top sleazy form as the graverobber. Irma eine stille kluge junge Frau studiert Medizin. Zur Finanzierung dieser Ausbildung vermietet Baenz ein Zimmer an Toni Schellenberg einen jungen Burschen vom Land mit vielversprechender Zukunft als Fussballer. Die Grossstadt aber das leicht verdiente Geld und oberflaechliche Freunde lassen Toni Training und Abendkurse vernachlaessigen und schliesslich stellt ihn sein Arbeitgeber vor die Tuer. Irma die sich in den feschen Sportler verliebt hat bittet den Vater um Hilfe. Dieser kann Toni schliesslich eine Anstellung als Taxifahrer verschaffen. Als aber Irma ein Studentenfest besucht und sich zudem auf ein Rendezvous mit dem Oberarzt Zbinden einlaesst, fuehlt sich Toni zurueckgesetzt. Eine verschwundene Halskette bringt ihn gar in den Verdacht, ein Dieb zu sein. Geplagt von Stress und Unsicherheit verliert er seine Stelle und geraet vollends in die Krise. Fuer Baenz wie fuer Toni beginnt eine schwierige Zeit des Umdenkens. Und Irma spielt dabei eine entscheidende Rolle.

Mwaaa haaa haaaa...yes Mad Scientists. We love 'em, don't we? And so does Nigel Honeybone on the Schlocky Horror Picture Show. I found this film in his bathroom under the sink. But I digress, The mono-maniacal world view, the handicapped assistants, the bubbling retorts, tampering in God's domain and so forth. The Mad Scientist is a staple of the genre, and sadly he doesn't come around much any more, except in anemic, fairly pointless exercises. I think Brent Spiner in Independence Day was the last half-decent Mad Scientist I saw, and he was mostly harmless. The 1999 film Bats reduced the Mad Scientist to typical post-modern irony. When asked why he Tampered In God's Domain, he simply replies "Because I'm a scientist, that's what we do!", while the very same year Deep Blue Sea featured that rarity, the Female Mad Scientist.Why so rare? This is a question I've asked myself again and again. Against all expectations, there simply aren't a whole lot of movies featuring Female Mad Scientists, at least not Mad in the classically accepted, hand-wringing, "I'll show them, I'll show them all!" sense of the word. By 1971, the Women's Lib movement was gathering momentum, so it was inevitable that a feminine version of the original Mad Scientist tale should surface. Lady Frankenstein promised that "Only The Monster She Made Could Satisfy Her Strange Desires!" - Let's see if it's true. Some flexibility may be required when defining Female Mad Scientists. A few thousand years of cultural pressure informs us on a near-DNA level that women are to be protected, and that they are more sensitive and in-tune to life and nature's patterns and vibrations. Overcoming stereotypes requires some actual effort on the part of the screenwriter, so it's the uncommon filmmaker, or the canny one searching for a marketable hook, who will breach the staid walls of tradition and give us a tale of a woman messing about with the natural order of things. The movie does fairly well by Rosalba Neri, billed as Sara Bay, who at the height of her beauty really steals your heart, spleen, liver, and all the fun bouncy bits. Her Tania is a calculating, self-centered bitch who's willing to drive a man to murder so she can enjoy a good-looking bonk. And who wouldn't? She has ample opportunity to hold her own against the male forces arrayed against her, for example matching Lynch bluntness for bluntness, her icy intellectualism a strong counterpoint to his earthy vulgarity. This brief exchange helps to lend an air of ambiguity to the following events, causing us to wonder the extent to which she will use her femininity to manipulate the men around her. After appearing in films from the misleadingly titled Too Much Johnson to Tora! Tora! Tora!, actor Joseph Cotten found his career frayed a little with The Abominable Doctor Phibes, The Screaming Woman, Soylent Green and Airport '77. His last film, The Survivor, made in 1981, was notable as the first Australian production to cost one million dollars. Captain Harris, played by Jane Mansfield's arm candy Mickey Hargitay, is one of the more distracting things about the movie. Not only does he seem to spend all his time either annoying Lynch or the Frankensteins, his mode of investigation seems suspiciously similar to the television detective Columbo, right down to "There's one thing I don't understand" and "Just one more question". He has no real bearing on the events of the movie, and advances the plot not one whit. He is The Filler That Walks Like A Man. Paul Muller plays Dr Charles Marshall. A Swiss actor, he was no stranger to the exploitation game, having appeared in I Vampiri in 1959, and numerous Jes Franco films like Count Dracula, A Virgin Among The Living Dead and Lesbian Vampires...I'll give you two guesses what that one's about. The most interesting name behind the camera was the director himself, Mel Welles, who by that time had already spent over decade working with the king of the B-movies, the great Roger Corman. Remember the manager with the outrageous accent in Little Shop Of Horrors? That's Mel. As usual, everything in the known universe seems to lead back to Roger Corman. Mel's last film, 2002's Raising Dead had exactly the opposite effect, and he died in 2005. The plot is paced quickly enough that we rarely notice its jagged edges don't quite fit together. Tania's notion of creating a monster to not only vindicate her father's theories but also to clean up his mess makes for a nice twist on an old story. If the monster is rather too obviously composed of mortician's wax, a glass eye and rubber gloves, it's at least a novel concept for the Frankenstein Monster. And I should mention the suspiciously modern-looking hats the men wear and their amazingly fake sideburns. Nothing says 'Nineteenth Century' like strange facial hair and obvious spirit gum.
